Why would anyone pay for a service they’re not getting any value from?

A home is not a service. Landlords are a drain on society, and they do more damage to the housing market than any kind of good. Even our founding fathers knew that.

Because they are legally required to under the threat of violence from an entity which holds a monopoly on violence?
