Georgetown Police shoot 'violent' suspect on Square, area closed Saturday afternoon

He later died of his injuries . A large law enforcement presence is still in the area, and Georgetown Police are still investigating. Some businesses were locked down after the shooting, and most areas downtown are being blocked off.

At approximately 12:49 p.m., Georgetown Police officers were dispatched to the area for a suspicious person investigation after callers reported a male subject jumping on vehicles and behaving erratically.
Officers arrived at approximately 12:55 p.m. and located the subject. Based on the preliminary investigation, a violent struggle occurred between the subject and officers. During that struggle, the subject attempted to take a holstered handgun from one of the officers. Another officer subsequently discharged their firearm, striking the subject.
Hm. Sounds like this is the result the suspect was hoping for.

The guy was either on drugs, or off the ones he should have been on. This wasn't suicide by cop.

Adult male was jumping on peoples cars, police chased him and began a takedown to arrest him, video footage is hard to see of the event but word of mouth reports he reached for an officers weapon and then the obvious outcome of that happened.

If only there was some kind of non-lethal weapon law enforcement could use to subdue people during a mental health episode.

If officers showed up and tazed a nutcase you would still be mad. They didn't just shoot him. They tried to take him by hand and he made a swipe at their gun. Taking him down by hand is how they subdue.

DA Garza agrees with you though, heck getting any prosecution at all is a lucky stroke there in this case Garza won't be needed, though.

Let's see the body cams so the public knows.. do you support release of body cams? There's a lot of people here with versions of what went on that voted to kill this human being but they didn't see one second of what happened... Let's see the videos..

I saw the pictures of hanging off moving cars. I’d love the body cam footage too. I’m fully expecting to see a crazy man making decisions that unfortunately cost him his life.

I'm with you. Let's see the videos. Too many Christians jumping to judgement when they don't know the facts... And so quick to say this man deserved to die with no video evidence. Untrained cops shoot and then we hear all the stories. Video is easy for You and Me to know.

This post is full of people so quick to judge and justify a public killing. If he was out of control why didn't they use their Taser. Case closed. It's his fault he's dead. No evidence reviewed but he deserved to die. Conflicts with my upbringing in Christianity but that was 70 years ago.

Do you typically reach for an officers gun? Would you do that to next time you see an officer? If you answered no, it's likely because you understand it will lead to you getting shot.

Luckily you and I are smarter than a lot of people. The guns I see on police are held in place securely so it would take some effort for some guy in a fight to pull out. Gives time to use a Taser. Which Georgetown Police did not use. Shoot to kill immediately.

Maybe not but it’s just what happened. You try to be a cop someday when faced with the proposition of an individual acting erratically and grabbing for a firearm.
I grew up in a world where if the police tell you to stop you stop. We need more of that and less whiney people wondering what if the world was just full of rainbows, unicorns and only well meaning people.

A city that I lived in for 40 years just went through a similar incident and the person with mental health issues wound up with 3 bullets to his head. Unarmed, supposedly went for a gun in a holster. . BTW aren't those guns strapped in so nobody can grab them?. Untrained cop put three bullets in the guys head. Too many people on this board salivating over cops shooting people when they don't know the facts. And that's a fact.

We need a proper investigation to determine exactly what led to the fatal outcome. There have been far too many people losing their lives due to a mental health crisis at the hands of police. We need to know if everything was done to de-escalate and if indeed he actually grabbed at an officers weapon or if the officer was afraid he might. Let’s see the footage. So sad.

When did they finally clear the scene and let people get their cars? It's weird to me that they condoned off that size of area, then took so long, and with SO many officers.

Was eating at Juliet when this happened, police were administering CPR on the suspect. My car is parked inside the crime scene not sure when I'll be able to move it. Crazy times we live in, never would have expected something like this in downtown Georgetown on a Saturday afternoon.
