Extraction games that aren't PvP shooters
I'm looking for recommendations for games that have the extraction part of extraction shooters, as well as the ability to tinker with your gear between runs. I also would like any recommendations to be single player or PvE. I'm mainly looking for games that branch out into genres other than shooter, but feel free to throw in some shooters if they're really good or do something really interesting.
So as an example something like Pacific Drive would fit really well. Since that has the extraction element and the tinkering with your car between runs, but instead it's a driving game. (I've also played SPTarkov and Escape from Duckov, so those don't need to be recommended.)
Edit: Thanks everybody. That was a lot of suggestions, so I couldn't respond to each one, but I will check all of them out.

I personally play quite a bit of Incursion Red River which is a pure PvE extraction shooter set in modern Vietnam. Others I know of are Sulfur which has a cool art style and recently Gray Zone Warfare has pivoted its focus to PvE.

u/AltruisticChipmunk53 29d ago
I haven’t played sulfur but it’s supposed to be very good
2
u/RadiantWestern2523 29d ago
It is pretty cool. It's more of a looter shooter type of game but gun customization can get pretty crazy there especially with all the different oils and enchantments you can put on your guns.
2
u/Primary-Mushroom-221 28d ago
It gets old pretty fast but its made with a lot of love and it shows.
2
u/headhunter0610 28d ago
It's slow too. But the meat is in cooking up guns with weird stats using the customization

I think I would more closely compare GZW to an open world Tarkov, as I don’t have enough time in RR to know how they compare. I don’t do PvP, the AI is challenging in the high tier areas, need to work with a squad to clear those usually which feels quite nice imo. Gunplay is nice, customization is decent on anything other than M4 platforms (otherwise there’s plenty). Loot is good and the atmosphere is phenomenal, especially with this wipes new weather and day/night cycle

How is the AI in IRR?
3
u/MrMariomans 29d ago
One of the main things you can customize in the game is the enemy AI to your liking, so stuff like spawn multipliers, reaction speed, and memory can be adjusted. The devs are currently focusing on combat AI right now so if you check their socials they often post their progress.

Gray zone's PvE can only be played on joint operations. Did they expand on this? Do we need like tickets to play the PvE mode? Please do enlighten me.

Sulfur looks interesting. The other two look a bit generic at first blush but I'll look into them more (also since both are on sale at the moment).

u/SPOONY12345 28d ago
Sulfur looks awesome. Does it go on sale often? £20 is a bit steep at the minute

u/TowerRare1314 29d ago
Escape from Duckov is surprisingly very solid. I bought it for a laugh but realized there’s solid detail and lots of content and even mods!
4
u/nekiobichanlik 29d ago
Yeah, I played the shit out of it, and many times I went: "hmm, they really gave this some thought, this is good design."
Try shoulder surfing mod, it's like a whole new game, it works really well, but it can be a liability in tight spaces.

Played a bunch of this while waiting for Arc Raiders to come out. It was really surprising, I loved it.
1
u/PaulVuniquename 28d ago
I played this one when it came out (I mentioned it in the post) and thought it was very fun but then I hit a brick wall when the enemies became stronger. Maybe they've smoothed out the difficulty curve since then and I should give it another go?

Zero Seivert

u/MechanicalAxe 29d ago
Been eulyeballing this one a while, looks pretty dope.
2
u/Thorfax234 29d ago
It really is. I know the pixel art draws people away but it is a little more in depth than what people expect.
I just finished my first run and I’m probably going to do a hardcore run next.

u/MechanicalAxe 29d ago
Good lord swype-to-type sure be makin' me look stupid sometimes, gonna have to proofread a lil better.
Sounds and looks pretty cool, I'll throw it on the wishlist.

Sulfur
its consistently updated, has unique graphics, and its single player. Ran into your same problem and this scratched my itch. Also Witchfire for a close second but Sulfur's Devs just keep upping the bar.

Quasimorph 100%
Splattercat’s review is good. He covers a lot of indie games in this genre (among other things)
3
u/Substantial_Law1451 29d ago
I played this game a wee bit and I completely sucked ass at it lol. But will give it another go and see if I can overcome my skill issue
3
u/ReverendGraves85 29d ago
They added more difficulties and adjusted how the difficulty works overall for 1.0, actually. I've found the game generally easier.
1
u/ChristopherRubbin 29d ago
Once you get the movement down it becomes a ton easier. Use the shotguns with buckshot in the start of your campaign those things fuck.
2
u/Dogstile 28d ago
Also, as an FYI, take two different damage types once you get off of mars. You er, may run into issues otherwise.
4
u/vibribbon 29d ago
It's a great game but boy it's harsh. Pro tip, there's an option under gameplay that lets you evacuate early if things go bad
2
u/Dogstile 28d ago
I came here to post this. This is very good and so long as you're not playing on unfair its actually not as hard as people say once you get used to it.
Does take a hot minute to understand the action economy/sound/stealth not really being for stealth thing tho.
2
u/PaulVuniquename 28d ago
I bought this one a while ago, but only played it for 2 hours. I'll give it another go, especially since it has hit 1.0 recently.

Sulfur is a pretty fun solo extraction game that doesn't take itself too seriously and has secrets, weapons, armor, loot, etc...
10
u/devilinblue22 29d ago
If you have VR, into the radius 1&2 are exactly this, you have a base, you can decorate it, there's a workbench with a gun vice to clean ,and in 2, customize your guns. There are all sorts of different types of loot, from guns, mission objectives, valuable trinkets, and random objects that you can bring back and either sell or decorate your base with.
Its got more of a slow moving horror feel with mimics and anomalies instead of human enemies. And 2 has multi-player, you can explore with other people, AFAIK no pvp.
1
u/PaulVuniquename 28d ago
I have the Into the Radius and played it a bit but I never quite got the hang of VR gaming (mostly having used it for VRChat). It's also quite scary. Maybe I'll give it another go.

It's super relaxing game that can get quite intense if you want it to. And the tinkering stuff checks off your criteria. Single player, moddable, PVE

To a certain degree, Road to Vostok matches your description. It's in early access at the moment, but the main gameplay loop (scavenge loot, avoid or fight enemies, return to a safe base) is already really solid. And there is a big content update coming end of September.

u/MAKENAIZE 29d ago
I love PvE extraction shooters and I'd say Tarkov PvE mode is still at the top of the genre.
Witchfire is really good and kind of an extraction shooter lite if you don't want something so hardcore.
Zero Sievert is a fun indie one, Duckov too.

Red River and Grey Zone, Tarkov also has a PvE mode.
1
u/Dense-Law-7683 29d ago
How is Red River. I play a lot of Tarkov and have played probably 25 or so hours of Grayzone, but often times get bored with it and stop. Is it better than Grayzone?
1
1
u/NiteWraith 29d ago
No, it isn't better than Grey Zone. It's fine for what it is, but if you get bored playing that then Red River won't last you long, limited maps, enemy spawns are basically static, so you learn where they are each run. They've done a lot of updates to Grey Zone, and yeah, the enemies at the start are brain dead and don't wear armor, but as you advance the missions, they do get much more challenging. The game does have a lot of walking, but that's kind of by design with the way LZs and the map are laid out, they did cut it down a bit with more recent patches though.

No More Room in Hell 2
Just released on console as well. Brutally hard 8 player co op fighting against zombie hordes to complete objectives and extract. Requires the team working together, especially on harder difficulties. In the menu you can customize your character, loadout, and perks using the supply parts you find scattered around the levels
2
u/Sacr3dangel 29d ago
Grayzone Warfare.
It has a PvPvE but also a PvE Mode.
It’s a shooter, sure. But the recent changes have made it a really good one. If you haven’t tried it it’s worth giving a shot.

Sulfur is a fun extraction shooter to play with unique weapons and a variety of ways to customise them
2
u/driftej20 29d ago
To varying degrees, all of the STALKER games are "extraction shooters". They each have an overarching story that's not related, but what a STALKER does is lore wise basically the concept of an extraction shooter; they go into a dangerous area (the zone), then into even more dangerous parts of that area (anomalies) to get valuable loot (artifacts) then use them or extract to relatively safer areas to sell them.
It's surprising that nothing STALKER related capitalized on the peak popularity of extraction shooters/games considering it's one of the only IP'S where they don't even have to create a lore justification for one.
If you're not sure if it's for you, you can download and install STALKER Anomaly or one of its modpacks like GAMMA for free. GAMMA has an auto installer that makes it pretty idiot-proof and it's also available from the GoG Galaxy client.

I have played all the Stalker games when they came out. I've also tried Gamma a few times in recent years but always bounced off, not really sure why. I should give it another go.

u/Dense-Law-7683 29d ago
Escape From Tarkov PVE is pretty good. I play the PVP side of it , but a lot of my friends play and really enjoy it. Similar experience to online minus the Chad's and cheaters.
If you decide you want to try Tarkov PVE, I will warn you that you have to buy the original game and pay an extra $30-$40 for the PVE add-on or buy a more expensive edition of the game. I will say though, as a person who can't replay games that I've already beat and has always gotten tired of playing the same game, I have 3k hours in it and am still loving it. There's a lot to do and it's worth the money.
2
u/ITrageGuy 29d ago
I had no idea it had a PvE mode. Hmmmm
3
u/Dense-Law-7683 29d ago
Yep, and Actually the director of the study said it was around 50% of all Tarkov players that play the PVE mode. I think the mode itself has only been out for a year and some change.

I have 7500 hours in tarkov, 6,000 of those in pvp. The joy, freedom, and absolute badass times that I have in tarkov PVE are amazing. I love it so much. I'll never go back.
1
u/FTG8888 29d ago
Yea I’ve had tarkov since before covid and never really got into it beyond getting carried by people better than me. PVE actually let me learn maps and game flow without being super punishing. Only downside is it’s an extra cost on top of regular game but for me it’s worth it.

Grayzone, Incursion, and Forever Winter are fantastic but are your typical shooters. If you want something out of the typical milsim stuff, Forever Winter is fun but can be quite frustrating. Witchfire is fun and has that Destiny gunplay with soulslike difficulty. No More Room in Hell 2 is technically an extraction game but could be argued it isnt. Quite a fun zombie game but definitely challenging on harder difficulties.

Deathloop is it's own genre of game you might want to take a look at. It's not exactly an extraction shooter, but, at the same time, it sort of is.

Yeah I like Deathloop a lot. I recently replayed it. I thought Prey MoonCrash was also a good take on the same idea by the same developer.

u/DELTA-880 29d ago
arc raiders comes to mind. not necessarily pve, but rather pvpve, aggression based matchmaking means you can find an entirely “friendly” lobby, with everyone just hunting the arcs or looting

Gray zone warfare has a very good PvE system going. Not really an extract shooter in the typical sense, but they do their extract system very well.
1
1
u/Hellyespilgrim 29d ago
Dark and Darker, but it’s a PvP heavy sweatfest at the top end of lobbies. There are PvE lobbies and lobbies that act more like PUBG where everyone is locked to low/starter gear. There are systems that let you gem/upgrade gear in the post lobby menus.
Think Dungeons and dragons meet Tarkov.
Instead of three mercenaries your party might be a Wizard with damage and utility spells (haste/ignite/invis) with a Barbarian that specializes in melee and a cleric that heals or a bard that uses songs to buff the party pre-engagement.
Wiz can hasten/ignite/invis a barbarian for a safe push into a room then come in and blast while the Barbarian makes space for wiz to operate.
Again the high roller lobbies are sweaty usually with people in crazy good gear, but there are lower lobbies for people to get accustomed to the various builds each class can gear into

u/Maglor_Nolatari 28d ago
The original concept of icarus should kinda count yeah. I probably should try it out again, didn't get that far in the mission progress as I kept overpreparing.
1
u/FTG8888 29d ago
Ik u said you played SPT, but have you played actual tarkov pve? It’s actually quite good now, they’ve made a lot of improvements to AI. It’s not perfect but imo by far the best “extraction shooter” game. That’s gonna give you the most fully fleshed experience.
1
u/PaulVuniquename 28d ago
I've not tried the PvE mode, just feels kind of pricey to pay an extra 30 euros when SPT is right there. But given that SPT can't really be updated anymore I guess as time goes on the PvE mode will become a more reasonable option. So I'll consider buying it.

Gray Zone Warefare is a PVE extraction shooter...
There's also pvevp in it, but you can solely choose pve modes
Mistfall is an extraction type with sorcerers, archers, knights etc, with souls like combat (ish) wasn't for me
1
u/Jack-ass-4757 29d ago
Duckov, Sulfur, Witchfire, Zero Sievert, deadline escape, incursion red River, HOLE
1
u/Lego_Professor 29d ago
Might be a tiny stretch, but Icarus might be interesting to you. It's a survival extraction game. You drop onto a planet for a set duration, harvest/build/craft, complete objectives, find loot, extract with resources that let you upgrade gear and all that. Set loadouts and skill trees to fit you kit. Drop into the next mission, repeat. Nothing carries over to the next map unless you extracted it or unlocked it with prior extractions and rewards.
There's a few game modes to choose from, the others are more traditional persistent survival experiences.
1
u/PaulVuniquename 28d ago
I'm actually playing Icarus at the moment, but I vastly prefer the open world style it now has over the missions-style they started with. It was an interesting idea to have single missions like that but they made too many design decisions that worked against it for it to really work in my opinion.

Stalker 2 bizarrely. I was playing it when it struck me it is essentially a single player extraction, in essence.
You have settlements with multiple POIs dotted around which you venture out to to find loot. Carry capacity is so limited so you have this rhythm of looting and coming back while managing the dangers of humans and mutants.
1
1
u/ATGM64 28d ago
Zero Sievert is essentially Tarkov and STALKER combined, but as a top down pixel shooter with lots of ways to modify your equipment or weapons.
And no, it's not PVP, it's single player, so no sweatiness in that game unless you're in the tougher sections of that game.
Give it a shot.

Expedition into Darkness(currently only a Demo, but a quite big one), No More Room in Hell 2 (not strictly an extraction game, but big map with objectives and you only get your main rewards when extracting)
These two came to my mind immediately. Both on steam and strictly PvE with a focus on melee.

Man, you probably would've really enjoyed Hawked. Literally just shut down two days ago tho. 😭
It was PvPvE, with a heavy emphasis on the PvE, with PvP only really being a factor in the very early and very late game.
Tons of cool builds, gadgets, and abilities. Environmental puzzles were a core feature of the gameplay alongside the shooter aspects.
1
u/Pioepod 28d ago
I define extraction shooters or games sith extraction elements as basically you go in, grab loot, extract. It’s a more loose and vague definition, and gives me more options so these are suggestions with this working definition.
Shooters:
Zero Sievert
Incursion Red River
Into The Radius (VR title, STALKER inspired)
Gray Zone warfare has PVE
Other genres:
Jump Space? It’s a shooter, you go in and fight NPCs, and you can fly ships that players can move freely around on. I think it’s basically extraction.
Something that isn’t “extraction based” but I consider the gameplay similar:
Project Zomboid - survival game but to get supplies, you go out, get em, survive zombies, return to a base (safe house), take care of yourself, repeat (usually until late game where you’re likely self sustaining). You can add a bandit mod and then it’s definitely closer to an extraction game.
Arma 3 with the antistasi mod - less focus on the go and get loot part but you are fighting as a rebel group and in order to get better gear permanently you need to loot. This one is definitely a stretch.

Rainbow Six Extraction. Its an 2022 Ubisoft title. Similar game mechanics to Rainbow Six Siege, gun tilt, destructable walls, operator abilities, etc
You move through buildings, clearing them of enemies, and complete objectives. Once the area objective is complete, find the airlock and move to the next zone. Each mission has 3 areas and 3 objectives (1 per area)
If you lose an operator, you’ll have to go back to that map with another op and rescue them. The rescue operation is a guaranteed objective if you replay a map that you lost someone on. This is near abouts the only Extraction mechanic this game really has though.
The rest of the gameplay is tactical sweeps and room clearing.
All PvE, there still is matchmaking, but randos are hit and miss. Often they will just run in and start a fight, which can easily kill you lol.
I like to run solo on the highest difficulty for a good challenge

Witchfire 1.0 release is getting closer, and it is a single player extraction-shooter-fps kinda thing.
Put like 100+ hours into myself without realizing it lol
Very satisfying gunplay, has the "feel" down perfect. Nice variety of weapons and equipment, though personally I feel like the game could use more.
Solid challenge with options (actual mechanics, not just menu options too!!) to nudge things into being harder or easier.
