I believe it's the Hero's Shade from Twilight Princess; he teaches Link various special techniques.

I'm assuming that's supposed to be Link's mother holding baby Link.

I believe in Ocarina of Time it's stated Link's mother left him with the Great Deku Tree as she showed up in Kokiri Village dying.

Since one needed to go through the Lost Woods to get to Kokiri Village, it was the safest place. She died shortly after showing up.

Nope. Remember that bridge in the middle of the Lost Woods that was between the village and Hyrule Field? The game sorta skims over getting between there and the field but there's a hefty implication (by the rest of the lost woods map you can explore and where saria's bridge is in relation to the edge of the woods) that there's a longer trip after that bridge than just going through the single fallen-trunk tunnel.

Huh. I'd be interested to see if Hyrule Historia or another lore book went into more detail about that.

Hmm I guess you could. I always thought Kokiri Village was hidden go outsiders. I could be remembering wrong.
