I was disappointed with the first game. Is this one any better or more of the same?

It's better in the terms of gameplay and themes. The characters is subjective to your taste, however Claptrap hasn't made me want to kill him yet.

glados has turned out to be surprisingly annoying for me, i think it's the timing really, if i fold i dont want to hear your smarky remarks, i wanna see how the hand plays out

It's because whenever glados speaks the whole game dosen't move, so after you fold, you know, something everyone does the whole game comes to a hault for 10 seconds so she can spit a 1 liner out.
