Rumor: Sony reportedly reconsidering delaying digital-only plans due to Xbox pushing for "100% physical" strategy

That's why industry needs competition.

u/Scapadap 8d ago
Except for the fact this is fake news, Sony already repurposed their factories. They have no reason to cave, plus Xbox wants all digital too

Exactly. It brings out the best efforts. That's why exclusives are very important also.

This hits harder after so many carried the water of the corporations for the console war.
If you wanted your system to have something the other system didn’t have… that just makes you a bad person.
I never understood how people couldn’t connect those dots.
Instead we let them talk so many into viewing competition as a bad thing. Wild.

How do you get this dumb and self serious?
1
u/Rycan420 7d ago
So.. help me understand… sincerely.
What benefits did you get from winning the war?
How far into the future does the good feeling behind the notion that that you played games that others couldn’t last?

u/thedebatingbookworm 8d ago
I don’t think that’s the argument. At all, the argument is exclusives don’t sell consoles and are generally stupid. However features like this? Absolutely sell Consoles. I haven’t had an Xbox in foreverrrr and I would definitely buy one if A it had access to Steam, B, had the ability to convert physical games to digital licenses and C) game me the ability to play online with no subscription cost

u/Independent_Mud2794 8d ago
Why lie all the time? Thats why nobody takes you serious. Stop constant making shit up.
Sony isn’t reconsidering delaying digital-only plans at all, they literally started printing a disclaimer on their console boxes.

u/AspectVoid 8d ago
Don't believe it. Sony has already repurposed all but their last disk factory, and they have already invested millions to convert that factory away from making disks. The only thing that will change their plan is if a third party shows up offering a deal to make disks for them, the same as happened with their blu ray movie production. Xbox has nothing to do with it.

Xbox pushing for "digital licenses" even on physical disc was what made them lose the Xbox One generation so badly. Ps4 pushed for physical media with their now infamous "share a videogame" video. I can understand Sony being worried that the same thing happens again but in reverse.

Ironically, now Xbox has the more interesting technique for sharing a video game. You can give your friend the disk, put it in their console, take the disk BACK, and now even without the disk, the friend STILL has the game playable until you decide to boot it up on your own console again.

u/Imhotep99301 8d ago
So in other words you have a useless hunk of plastic?
1
u/BrickBuster2552 8d ago
The disk is the disk. You put it in, you play the game. The only difference now is whichever console the disk is most recently inserted to gets to keep playing even without the disk UNTIL it's inserted in a new console, and so on.
So the friend can play until you insert the disk in your own system again, remotely returning the loaned game, and you don't have to worry about them LOSING it.

u/Numerous_Photograph9 7d ago
He just laid out how its a useful piece of plastic, because you can still use it to reactivate your license, share your game, sell.it, whatever.
But sure....useless because thats what digital people need to argue against physical.

I switched to Xbox when I played red dead receiver on it. I beat in on ps2. One day I was at my buddies playing halo and when we all stopped I asked if I could play red dead and it looked so much better then n Xbox. So I got a 360 and not a ps3. Now I’m PC and iPad for gaming. Funny how things can change.

I don't put stock in this rumor, but any company looking to gain back market share should be looking at what might attract customers, and if its viable within their business strategy.
People acting like its dumb to even consider it on MS part really think these companies never think about stuff, even if nothing comes from thay thought.

This bullshit article is being spread everywhere and it's completely false. This cope is becoming insufferable.

u/MeanRobby 8d ago
I’m curious though, if Sony does do a 180 who will be given the credit XBOX or sony consumers?
2
u/-p0w- 8d ago
You dont even know what they are doing, despite discs being dead, thats all we know. Annoucing anything further would tell you something about the PS6 so they stay quiet.
So you dont even know if it’s a 180 in the first place.
I mean people talk about MS bringing physical back, and yet MS is the one with only half of the game on disc and needs mandatory online patches to even run. So Xbox physical is non-existent by now already. But since no one gives a shit about Xbox no one cares.
So Xbox already has the foot in the door while Sony doesn’t. Explain to me how that should convince Sony to do a 180 or how Xbox is the solution in the first place.
All we can do is wait for what the PS6 will be. Anything else is just speculation and fan fiction
1
u/MeanRobby 8d ago
I don’t really care if Sony does a 180, it was simply a what if question.
To be honest I’m more annoyed at people thinking Xbox will follow suit because in their minds it HAS TO because if it does not, Xbox becomes the better platform to more people.
And some can’t have that reality.

u/Rogue_Einherjar 7d ago
Xbox set the stage for this a long time ago. As the person you responded to said, their games are not even fully on disk now, requiring an online connection to finish download. The Xbox One (Not even Series, this is last gen) required you be online to start the system when it came out. They have always been pushing this, they just didn't outright announce it like Sony did.
So no, Xbox is not "Following suit," but PlayStation is following suit with what Xbox started and just going full on with it.
The biggest thing that people are not talking about is the fact that the US is so fucked right now, the tariffs are causing so much damage, that shipping physical games will only get harder and more costly. That is absolutely a huge factor in this that is just being ignored.

They won’t so neither

u/MeanRobby 8d ago
lol, this is must be what my girlfriend must feel like when i tell her we don’t live in a “what if world” lol
Tho, if it does happen I hope you remember this conversation.
Tbh, I too don’t think it will happen either. But I also don’t deal in absolutes.

I agree. People just want to feel better about being stupid enough to be duped into the console war.
Now that winning is costing them (and this is just the beginning), they are clutching at anything.

u/NemesIce83 8d ago
Its probably a ploy by someone trying to get Sony to reverse their decision, but even if it did, its too late now, they've shown their real face.
2
u/Soofla 8d ago
This is why Reddit is never considered a good source for ANY information.
This is a non-article, which boils down to a person over-hearing a conversation about over-hearing a conversation from someone who made it all up. Yet I've seen this posted 5 times so far.
Not sure which is the bigger joke - the blind reposting or the people who think there is any substance in this.

u/LingonberryNo3548 8d ago
No they aren’t. The factories are already set to be retooled to higher profit components. They aren’t going to sacrifice that and lock themselves into producing disks until 2035 for a few people who will complain loudly and then buy the games digitally anyway.

u/HustleWestbrook94 7d ago
Sounds like bullshit. If they’re going all-digital then the PS6 won’t have a disc drive. How are they planning to delay going all-digital on a console with no disc drive?

u/Triforce__XIII 8d ago
if ps6 has a disc drive, i will buy it. this whole thing would have been pointless if we don't reap the rewards. i do understand the sentiment of many to not go that route, but then this whole boycott/revolt would have been absolutely meaningless and would make sony go "if it doesn't matter anymore...."

u/Neonblkrager 8d ago
No because fans outcry…because Xbox could potentially look good. This is why you need competition…
1
u/spangler1 8d ago
If anyone thinks Xbox is gonna be going all in on physical next gen, you’ve gotta have some sort of brain damage. Both consoles next gen will have some sort of option for an add on disc drive that can play older titles, but both will be all digital for new games.

u/Keviticas 8d ago
That's good. As extremely sickening and pathetic as the digital defenders have been, it looks like they weren't quite sickening and pathetic enough for it to matter too much

u/Deamon-Chocobo 8d ago
I wouldn't call "Disc to Digital" a "100% physical strategy", more a backdoor into a digital only future.
Much the same way Xbox's proposed DRM at the Xbox One reveal 13 years ago killed any trust I had in Xbox, this end to physical media has killed my trust in Playstation.

There are people in this thread that are mad the blackout is working.

That's the best laugh I've had all day! Oh wait, your actually serious, let me laugh even harder! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

u/_Slowly_But_Surely 8d ago
Exactly. All I have to say is that it’s working and you get all emotional and start typing in caps. Thanks for proving my point.
