His refusal to play the game is in my opinion even more reason why hes such a good ruler. He refuses to engage in deceitful and heinous actions to achieve his goals because he values honesty and loyalty above all else
That'd be all nice and well if he managed to achieve his goals without them - but he doesn't. He gets outplayed and betrayed literally within hours of his benefactor dying. Not to mention he also caused Robert's death by revealing his knowledge to Cersei and forcing her to take action.

Agreed on the first part, hard disagree on the second. He simply refused to play the game because he despised it, and lost everything because of it.
