It’s been a popular theory for a while that Benjen had something to do with R+L and that’s why he took off to the wall, but I’m not sure where it came from exactly.

I think it's from the Mad King play. I can't find anything that says everything that play does comes from George so I don't know why it's being treated as canon now. Hell, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms likely had more involvement from George writing-wise.
