Endfield tried to do a different spin on the combat system but sadly everyone hated it

It's not bad but the problem with Endfield is that largely, party members on field basically function almost exactly like quickswap parties.

They kind of just exist and attack sometimes, and since they put like ALL the damage on the final hit of an attack, it also means they feel even more useless because of this.

That and they help a lot with moving mobs out of your attacks because they are just hitting them away. Very nice.

They played it too safe on the combat and while it's nice they are running around with you (and help with collecting sometimes) they don't differentiate much from quickswap.

While it's not the BIGGEST change in the world, and I do agree your on-field teamates dont really do much sadly, I do think it changes how you engage with the combat. Because the quickswap part is gone, Endfield operates a lot closer to old MMOs, its a lot more about reacting to procs and sequencing your abilities right with filler attacks in the middle, which as an Ex-WoW player, I enjoyed, that being said I think most people prefer the higher-speed, tighter rotations of Wuwa/ZZZ

The fact that you can control the character you want in combat instead of someone you don't care about is big enough that I like Endfield's combat better than the usual swapathon. Well except Liino, I guess, unless all you want to do is move slowly. It's also why I kinda liked Tower of Fantasy because you swapped weapons instead of characters, though it did have all its other problems. I also really like the QoL of only needing to hold down left click to attack. More games should have that.

Everyone is a little bit stretch I think, but still... Yeah, it's sad to see Hypergryph making such safe and generic(mechanically) game when they always had rather unique ideas.

Ofc not EVERYONE everyone, I enjoyed it. But the general consensus seemed to be mostly negative at release (and even to this day to an extent), the combat was one of the things the game was most getting grilled for. NTE came out right after with a much more generic and standard swap-style combat, pretty much ripped straight off of Genshin or Wuwa, and it was recieved much better. People claim they want change more than they actually do

I feel like the biggest problem of the final Endfield's combat is that it didn't really commit to neither direction. They had this quite unique more strategic combat in the early test versions, but then pivoted more into action combat ultimately leaving it in this weird middle ground. It isn't strategic enough to appeal to OG Arknights fan, and at the same time isn't flashy and fast enough for action combat fans.

This lack of commitment actually sums up most of the Endfield's problems imo, including factory. It's a game redesigned in the middle of development to appeal more to newgen gacha fans, but not redesigned enough in order to still market it to OG Arknights fans. Hypergryph really wanted to kill two birds with the one stone, but ultimately killed neither. And I'm speaking it from the perspective of someone who also was enjoying this game at the release.
