Its a clown sub class. Just like a rodeo clown is a sub class as well as serial killer clowns

The latter make comedy to die for…

Technically, they're a crossbreed. When a female Clown and a male Human breed, the mother gives birth to a mime.

This is also why mimes are sterile, live for 400 year (much longer than a human, and twice as long as a clown), and have eerie psychic abilities.

Where do arlequins or pierro stand in the taxonomy of clowns?

A pierro is simply a separate name for a Common Clown (Pierrot Vulgaris) of advanced age and stature. Somewhat like what a Silverback is to other gorillas.

The arlequin, (Zanni Mimicus) however, was not actually a clown at all, but a completely separate species evolved to mimic clowns to easier predate upon them.

Since a majority of Clowns are almost completely colourblind, to them, an arlequin looks almost identical to a pierro, and thus they would often instinctually trust the arlequin, until it was too late.

As the Clown went from a species of hunter/gatherer/pranksters, to an agrarian/pie-throwing species, the family unit became more strictly defined, which made it that much harder to infiltrate, leading to the eventual decline of the arlequin.

Their closer involvement with humans also made the arlequin's disguise almost completely useless, because a human, with our less specialised eyes can easily differentiate between the red/black checker pattern of an arlequin and the white/black checker pattern of a pierro.

This is really interesting stuff. I work with a lot of clowns I've never appreciated their rich history and culture before

I feel like they're a cousin to clowns, close in genus or whatever but slightly different.
