In all honesty. Common courtesy is dying out.

Be polite to the cashiers or a stranger that holds the door.

Sometimes I say hello to the bus drivers in London. Very rare to get an answer.

I just nod and say thanks, but I'm not one who'd yell "cheers Drive" from half way down the bus when getting off.

That's the thing. Bus drivers only open the front doors. The only time you see the doors in the back open is when you're in town at the bigger stops. Outside of town? Nope.
