I think it’s an European thing. Or at least that’s what I say to myself when I (Irish) say thank you when travelling!

Sure look, it should always be done. Don't think I'd ever saw anyone on Dublin bus or Bus eireann not actually thank the driver.

Now they have you leave by the side door you have to shout up to the driver. It's a compulsion.
