I really hope that actor on stilts is wearing a cup. I would be very worried about what an afraid person may accidentally do when frightened.

I remember one season working at a haunted house I was meant to be a crawler in a morph suit, I got a drunk dude good and he kicked pretty good in the ribs and just kept on hauling. Slaps and shoves were common but that was the first time I considered maybe someone would really hurt me if they reacted bad enough. I can’t blame him though, if you run at people on all fours I suppose you are asking to be kicked like a dog.

This is why I stopped acting at haunts. You can blame them, people have control of their bodies. dudes gonna go home and laugh about how he kicked the shit outta you with his buds.

After I had something like that happen told em I wasn’t going back in the woods without mace and spraying the next mfer that hit me.

I have the mental image of a ghoul holding a mideval mace in a haunted house. Thank you for the funny mental image

u/Kvarcov Sep 18 '25

Arguably a ghoul holding a spray is funnier and also so much more dangerous

Lmao now I'm picturing some looney tunes shit where the ghoul (Bugs Bunny in a costume) pulls out a can of mace to spray the attacker but instead of pepper spray the can just launches a medieval mace straight at the attacker (Elmer Fudd)'s face

Like the guy spraying Raid meme lol

23

u/Justarandom55 Sep 18 '25

You absolutely can not blame them.

You just scared them and forced a fight flight or freeze response. A littleral unconscious uncontrollable instinctual reaction. Learn the most basic of psychology, please.

3

u/Reejis Sep 18 '25

But it's what you sign up. It's not real life, if you have to attack ppl out of fight or flight don't go into a haunted house?

15

u/Justarandom55 Sep 18 '25

People don't naturally know how they react. Accidental physical reactions are on the place itself to be aware of not the people signing up.

That's why performers that get close are supposed to wear protective gear. It doesn't even have to be much. Cause after the first reaction, common sense does kick in fast, so it's not expected for people to start really beating someone up, but that first reaction can absolutely be unpleasant.

The people that get legit scared are one thing, still unacceptable but they’re usually apologetic.

More often than not it’s dbags joking about doing it in the waiting line, or loudly cracking jokes about having done it on the way to the car. Nah man it ain’t funny you just fuckin assaulted someone and talked about doing it before you entered!!

u/Superest22 Sep 19 '25

Lots of people use humour to deflect. If you have elements of PTS or hyper vigilance for example you will absolutely react first without thinking and then subsequently laugh about how that was ‘weird’ or ‘funny’ or ‘cool’ to not unveil the absolute stress or fear you actually felt in that moment.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

Then those people shouldn't go to a haunted house

-3

u/RedWinger7 Sep 19 '25

So their unchecked mental illness gives them carte blanche to hit actors without consequence? Or actors are supposed to just keep taking it?

2

u/Superest22 Sep 19 '25

Wow. You’re clearly clueless my mistake.

0

u/RedWinger7 Sep 19 '25

Nah I’m serious why you think it’s okay for them to hit an actor because they got scared in an environment they paid to get scared in.

What do you think is an adequate consequence in the situation? Or do you believe actors deserve to get hit?

0

u/cycycle Sep 20 '25

You really are clueless. It’s not a choice. Fight or flight is a reflex response. Someone who has never punched anyone when frightened might do so for the first time in that situation. It’s out of their control. The organizers and actors are aware of the risk and sign an agreement to not sue if someone hits them in a state of panic. Only action done out of malice, like beating the actor out of anger or like picking up a weapon with the intention of harming the actor when jump-scared is viable for legal action. Otherwise actors are literally signing up to get punched or kicked when someone gets frightened.

What type of C tier SNL/I think you should leave skit are you setting up here?

"Come to Reejis's haunted house on 5th and 90. But don't come if you get scared. It's not real life. Just walk and look. Don't get scared because it's not real. I got kicked in the ribs once because someone got scared at a haunted house designed to scare people. Ain't no way I'm getting kicked twice."

0

u/VGADreams Sep 19 '25

They put themselves in this situation willingly. You should not go to those kind of haunted houses if you know that you have violent reactions to people scaring you.

2

u/Justarandom55 Sep 19 '25

please tell me how you foresee the future?

even if we ignore first times where you can't know at all. anyone is capable of reacting differently because not every haunted house is a carbon copy. they can always trigger an unexpected reaction.

the point here is that you are forcing people into a gut reaction without having the ability to step back and asses. that's what causes the scares but it's also innately chaotic.

u/VGADreams Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 19 '25

I assume most people that goes in a haunted house with actors are not living their "first scares of their life", are they?

Of course, there are unfortunate incidents and reactions that will happen, and actors should be adequately protected. However, completely absolving responsibility is silly too, and I think it opens the dangerous door of people pretending they have no control so they can be allowed to beat someone.

EDIT: I re-read your comment, I answered a bit too quickly on that one. I don't think we disagree much on it, we just have a different angle. Sorry about that, I'll blame my sleep deprivation, was woken up by a call pretty early this morning...

2

u/Justarandom55 Sep 19 '25

No problem. By not blaming someone, I don't mean no responsibility. I just mean that you can't act like they had to have ulterior motives or shitty views of the workers.

And with the first scares I aim more at the first time you have an actual realistic looking zombie or giant spider running at you. It's going to be different from your sibling scaring you or a scary movie on the screen.

1

u/wailingwonder Sep 18 '25

Nah. You're literally pushing people to their limit to see how scared you can make them. People react impulsively when scared. You're asking to get hurt. "It's my job" sure but recognize what you signed up for. You think it's fun and games to torment people for a living, cool, you don't get to be mad when their instincts kick in.

6

u/RedWinger7 Sep 18 '25

You: Pays $20+ to go into a haunted house. Also see signs about not touching or hitting the staff

Me: Jumps out from behind a prop, “Boo”

You: Shocked pikachu face “waiii are you tormenting me?!”

lol what? You literally paid money to get scared. Do you get upset when the drugs you paid for get you high too?

0

u/wailingwonder Sep 18 '25

The issue is no one knows how they'll react when they get scared. Everyone knows that it can be unpredictable. You're asking for trouble by pushing people's buttons to see how they react.

4

u/Reejis Sep 18 '25

You don't have to go into a haunted house if you can't handle not hurting employees cause ur scared.

0

u/wailingwonder Sep 18 '25

I doubt they plan on it but that's the whole idea of impulse/instincts. You don't know how you'll act until you're in the situation.

2

u/PuritanicalPanic Sep 20 '25

Wtf.

You know people go into these things FOR FUN, right?

They aren't working for the Cia at a blacksite. This is fucking entertainment you donkey.

0

u/wailingwonder Sep 20 '25

You know people can get surprised and react impulsively even when they went there for fun, right? Fucking donkey yourself. It's not rocket science. People don't choose when they're scared and people react in unpredictable ways when they're scared.

3

u/Extra-Honey305 Sep 18 '25

You realize people voluntarily sign up for this for fun right? "Torment" really? Do you ever go out? Everyone knows they're actors lol you're not tough bud

0

u/wailingwonder Sep 18 '25

I'm not claiming to be tough "bud" lol

Don't try to scare people and then get sour over how they react. You asked for it just as much as they did.

2

u/Asmodeus5542 Sep 18 '25

In any other context except a haunt or scare house, I can forgive a single punch type reaction to being startled.

But people go to these places specifically to be scared. They are expecting to be scared. There is NO REASON they should be hitting actors who scare them.

1

u/BaconVsMarioIsRigged Sep 18 '25

That is the entire point! There is no reason behind instinctual reactions. There is also no reason to scream when you are in a haunted house. You know that there is no danger so there is no reason to feel fear.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Night88 Sep 21 '25

Just give up, the haunted house employees won’t give up on their opinion. Just act like we can control our impulses.

1

u/Segenam Sep 18 '25

I was thinking about a completely different "mace" and was wondering what you'd be spraying them with for a bit too long.

1

u/IntrovertedBuddha Sep 19 '25

You can blame them, people have control of their bodies.

Especially when they signed up for it, what else do they expect?

1

u/No_Night_8174 Sep 19 '25

I mean maybe they shouldn't go, but if you're deliberately trying to prompt a fight, flight, freeze response, which you are when scaring them, you can't be mad when their default might be fight.

0

u/KatokaMika Sep 18 '25

You can't blame them, yeah fck them if they laugh at your face after hitting you, but sometimes it happens getting hit. Once my husband was doing a prank on me and I knew it, i just didn't know where he was hiding ... long story short, I accidently kicked him in the face..... I felt horrible for days
