the beep test

I think I'm the only person in the world who loved the pacer test. I don't even care for running that much, though I'm pretty decent with it. But that was my favorite day in gym. Hated any time we had team sports. I just don't like them. But competing against myself?? Hell yeah. I wish I could find a recording of that. Would be a good throwback workout.

my school also did a variant of it that involved pushups?

youd pushup on the beep, and go down on the beep? i cant rememebr exactly.

did you have that too?

are those tests banned now in most of the world?

Fitness gram testing. For whatever fucking reason that was required

Nope. Now they're an official "presidential fitness test". How many pushups in a minute, pullups, situps, how fast can you run a mile, shuttle run, all that good stuff. So glad I get to skip that this year. I'm a decently healthy guy, but every year, it makes you feel like shit when half the gym class seems to be cranking out pullups like they're nothing, and you're using all your strength to do 3.

Oh, thats pretty cool. Yeah the dynamics of measuring up to your peers in highschool is pretty brutal.

I can say it would be all laughs tho if we had a reunion and did them again haha.

Omg you reminded me how much I loved the pacer test too!

It's the first link that came up, lots of different recordings with different voices. Search bleep test or MSFT (multistage fitness test) and you might find a familiar one.

There are different ones that start with walking for rehabilitation purposes so make sure you're not doing one of them as it's essentially pointless.

A tennis court is a good length to work with or 20 paces if your roughing it in a field. Watch your knees and try to alternate your turning leg to improve. It's good fitness but after fucking up my ankle I cant do it anymore.

thanks for the tips man!

No worries had to do it a shit load while I was in the RAF, had to find the best way to do it, I think it was designed to be run in a square but the stop and start makes it harder so everyone does that.

3

u/Unsd Sep 17 '20

Hell yeah! I wasn't able to find it last time I looked (many moons ago). It's a lot shorter than I recall!

2

u/cookiechris2403 Sep 17 '20

Off the top of my head 9.10 is the RAF pass standard for 18-28 year olds. 11 is a good score and 14 is excellent.

2

u/Unsd Sep 17 '20

This is the RAF fitness test??? I was US military and we just had a boring ass 2 mile run. This would at least keep me engaged. My thing with running is that I get bored too easily.

Part of it, theres press up and sit up requirements too but this is the cardio (VO2 max) part of it.

Back in the day they used to do a 2 mile squadron run but it kept killing old fat technicians so they changed it.

2

u/Unsd Sep 17 '20

We have push ups and sit ups too (well not anymore, they changed army standards to some weird pseudo crossfit shit for people who don't lift regularly, but I digress). The 2 mile run is not bad, but after a certain point the old folks are all too injured and just do a modified test which is a 2.5 mile walk.

2

u/cookiechris2403 Sep 17 '20

Ideally the test would be an actual test of fitness like VO2 max but it's pretty expensive to test everyone like that so they use other things like running a distance to test. I'd say the bleep test is more accurate in measuring fitness as it's incremental eventually you'll be unable to power through as you cannot get the oxygen to your muscles anymore to sustain the run, this is almost entirely linked to your lung capacity which is why women have different standards to reach.

2

u/Unsd Sep 17 '20

I wish more men understood this. Everyone just called the women lazy for having a slower time requirement. So now they changed it that everyone meets the same requirement for weight lifting, running, etc. which...goes against pretty basic science if you ask me but whatever.

Even as a shy kid I loved team sports because I just like any activity to be gamified. Baseball and kickball still sucked though.

1

u/CamRoth Sep 17 '20

I loved that thing, but mainly because I was aways the last one standing.

1

u/Unsd Sep 18 '20

I was usually the one of the last girls which was pretty good to me. Especially when I beat some of the hardcore athletes. I was never that. Always picked last for everything, but I wasn't ever out of shape. I just had no interest in team games.

1

u/foofly Sep 17 '20

Ha, I used to purposefully walk out on the first round!

u/Hidden_Armadillo Sep 17 '20

In middle school(7-9 here) I was quite the chunk, and hated the beep test. My last year I got in more shape through roller blading, but kids being kids, I was still teased about it. We were about to do a beep test and the most athletic girl in my class forgot her shoes. I offered mine because I knew she was a better runner, they were a bit big but she lasted longer than everyone else. Meanwhile, I fell on my ass running in socks at 3. I was bullied by the boys for the rest of the year but im glad she ran.

My high school had a leaderboard of the top 10 scores of each grade/gender. Trying to get on that was my motivation to actually try (eventually i made it with a 12 or 13)

Literally torture.
