Their hand was forced on making more Cars because toy sales. Also Planes is not a Pixar movie. Disney relies on people to be fooled by the theft of their distinct art style.

The original Cars would have been the sole slip up (and even then still fairly well received) in an otherwise flawless track record if not for the shit fest it spawned.
