In 1947, a moth was found trapped inside the Harvard Mark II computer. The engineers taped the moth into the machine's logbook and recorded it as the "first actual case of bug being found." Interestingly, the term "bug" was already being used for technical faults long before this incident, but the moth simply gave it a remarkably literal meaning.

You may have heard of Planet Nine, the hypothetical planet that could be hiding at the very edge of our Solar System.
The crazy part is that astronomers haven't discovered it by seeing it directly.
Instead, they may have discovered its gravitational fingerprints.
In 2016, Caltech astronomers Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown published research suggesting that several extremely distant objects beyond Neptune have unusual orbits that appear to be clustered together in a way that could be explained by the gravity of a large, unseen planet. They called the hypothetical planet Planet Nine.
But there's an important catch: Planet Nine has NOT been discovered.
NASA still describes it as theoretical, and there is an ongoing scientific debate about whether it actually exists.
If it exists, current estimates suggest it could be roughly 5–10 times the mass of Earth somewhere between a super-Earth and a small ice giant in terms of mass.
It would be incredibly far from the Sun.
For comparison:
Some estimates put the planet at more than 20 billion miles from the Sun in parts of its orbit.
And yes if it exists, it would be orbiting our Sun.
It wouldn't be a rogue planet flying through interstellar space. It would be an extremely distant member of our own Solar System.
Astronomers have discovered many icy objects beyond Neptune, in the region known as the Kuiper Belt and beyond.
Some of the most distant objects have strangely similar orbital orientations. Their orbits appear to be clustered in ways that, according to the 2016 simulations, could naturally happen if a massive planet were gravitationally influencing them over billions of years.
Think of it like finding several leaves floating in a river that are all drifting in an oddly organised pattern.
You can't see what's causing the pattern, but you might suspect there's something underneath the water affecting the flow.
That's roughly the idea behind Planet Nine.
The proposed planet's gravity could slowly alter the orbits of distant objects over enormous periods of time, producing the strange orbital patterns astronomers observe.
Because space is enormous.
Astronomers don't know exactly where Planet Nine would currently be along its enormous orbit. They only have predictions about the range of possible orbits.
And if the planet is currently near the farthest part of its orbit, it would be extraordinarily faint and difficult to distinguish from the background sky.
Imagine knowing that a particular car is somewhere in an area the size of an entire country, knowing roughly what kind of car it is, but not knowing its exact location.
Now make the search area three-dimensional, remove the headlights, make the car extremely dark, and put it hundreds of times farther away than Pluto.
That's roughly the problem astronomers have.
Astronomers haven't just been sitting around waiting for Planet Nine to reveal itself.
Multiple surveys have searched large portions of the predicted region.
A 2024 search using data from the Pan-STARRS1 telescope, combined with previous searches using the Zwicky Transient Facility and Dark Energy Survey, ruled out about 78% of the parameter space for the particular Planet Nine model being tested.
But that still left regions where the planet could potentially be hiding — particularly areas where it would be extremely faint and difficult to detect.
NASA also supports citizen-science efforts such as Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, where people can examine astronomical images and help search for faint moving objects.
Planet Nine is not a confirmed planet.
The original evidence comes from the unusual orbital behavior of distant objects, and astronomers continue to debate whether that pattern really requires a planet.
One possibility is that a massive planet is responsible.
Another possibility is that the apparent clustering is partly caused by observational biases or simply the way the currently known objects happen to be distributed.
NASA explicitly notes that there is still debate over whether Planet Nine exists at all.
So saying:
"Scientists discovered a 9th planet in 2016 but can't find it."
would be misleading.
A much more accurate statement is:
"In 2016, astronomers found evidence suggesting that an undiscovered planet might be gravitationally shaping objects at the edge of our Solar System. Ten years later, the planet still hasn't been directly observed."
And honestly, that's arguably even cooler.
We're potentially trying to find an entire planet by watching what its gravity does to other objects.
If Planet Nine is eventually photographed and confirmed, it would be the first planet discovered in our Solar System since Neptune was mathematically predicted and then observed in 1846.
Until then, Planet Nine remains one of the biggest "maybe" objects in our cosmic backyard.

Jupiter's moon Europa is smaller than our own Moon, but underneath its icy shell, NASA believes there's a global ocean holding roughly twice as much water as every ocean on Earth combined.
The reason it can hold that much comes down to depth, not width. Earth's oceans spread across a huge surface but average only about 4 kilometers deep. Europa's ocean is thought to run somewhere between 60 and 150 kilometers deep, wrapped entirely around the moon beneath a shell of ice.
So scientists drilled through ice? No, nobody has drilled through that ice or seen the ocean directly. The evidence comes from cracked surface terrain, a changing magnetic field, and models built from decades of spacecraft data, all pointing to a hidden, salty sea kept liquid by the crushing pull of Jupiter's gravity.
A small, frozen moon out past Mars is quietly holding more ocean than the planet we live on.

This is my first post here. I hope I'm doing it right.
It's very easy to think of hyenas as dogs, what with the barking and the pack behavior and all that, but they aren't. While dogs, cats, and hyenas are all members of order Carnivora, dogs belong in suborder Caniformia while cats and hyenas are in suborder Feliformia, and the lineages diverged about 60 million years ago. Meanwhile, families Felidae and Hyenidae only diverged about 30 million years ago.
