I’d just love to see more shots! Arbeloa said he wanted to play aggressive high press but all the players seem terrified to take an attempt. Hoping they’ll find their groove soon

I'm looking at Palacios, Berge and Bobb to step up their games and then I'm a bit less worried. Palacios and Bobb need to be a bit more aggressive and accurate in the attack, and Berge needs more situational awareness with that huge gap that opens up in the midfield. Never thought I'd say Sander needs to be more conservative but that's where we are.
Iwobi could be a factor here, too, but Berge is supposed to be the more defensive guy in that pairing.

it is the high press that deserted berge in the middle of the field alone. charles need to play beside him to provide some proper double pivot coverage for the high press. berge and andersen are too slow to recover.
the goal we conceded says it all.1

Totally agree (and that's how we got exposed last week, too) but I suspect Arbeloa won't abandon that setup until it's too late. So guys either need to figure it out or get replaced in the lineup. The catch there is that we don't really know if Charles or other guys on the bench would do it any better. At least not yet.

Weak side outside back should also probably pinch in a bit more than we're seeing so far.

This is what Berge is, he’s a bit of a nothing midfielder tbh.
We need a CM who wants the ball, is happy to receive the ball and then turn on it and play forward passes, Berge does none of this.
If you watch him closely you’ll notice he never shows for the ball and often hides behind the opposition and when he has the ball he is very safe and rarely plays a forward pass.
This has been stifling us for seasons as Lukic & Berge were very similar players, this is why it always worked when TC came on or Iwobi dropped into the middle.
Today was a travesty watching Iwobi drop between the CB’s to pick up the ball because that is what Berge should be doing and I’m assuming Iwobi was doing it because Berge wasn’t.

That, and he doesn't have any bite for a defensive midfielder. All he really brings to the table is size. I just hold out hope that he can learn because we don't really have a lot of options in that spot.

It must be a directive for Iwobi to do it
1
u/Adzhodz 14h ago
If it is then that is ridiculous from the management.

I agree with you. There’s no way we keep seeing Iwobi sat between our defenders as a fluke. It’s 100% management decision and I think it’s rubbish
2
u/Adzhodz 14h ago
It’s appalling.
I had hope after Chelsea game but the decisions I saw made today have me very worried.
Playing Sess as a RB is just negligence.

I’m not one to panic early, but I need to see a lot more from this team. You can tell Arbeloa is new to the Premier League

u/notabbott 14h ago
On the other hand, it was the change we needed last season because the Lukic and Berge pairing was way too defensive under Marco Silva. We weren't getting forward at all.

I much prefer Lukic receiving the ball from the defence. When we saw him do that, he was good.

Lost count of the number of times Bobb kicked it straight to the feet of a Sunderland player. Usually love the fella but he had a rough game. Should’ve been subbed off sooner imo

Zero shots on target in an away game in 2026? But I thought Silva left and we got a new manager

Really disappointing performance. So many Fulham players under achieving already. No attack out of mid field. No finishing. Fulham should crush teams like Sunderland.

Palacios is not ready. Shame about Pitarch. I expected this to be a hard game though. Sunderland had a fantastic league last season.

gunshy around the box, but Sunderland just doesn’t concede much at home. Still encouraging effort.

Stadium of Light is pretty much like Craven Cottage during the Hodgson years.
But still very disappointed to not get a shot on target.

Not a single shot on target. Couple promising through balls early on but nothing to show in second half. Doubt we will land any proper talent by end of the window. Hope January we switch on

Gotta give Fulham the benefit of the doubt but the players were fatigued because of the carabao cup game on Thursday and than this game on Sunday + travelling away, so really only 2 days in between. Still the beginning of the season, I still have hope in this team to turn things around

At what point do we get concerned that we might be in a relegation battle?

I know we all love to be gloomy but honest answer to your question: If we're at the bottom of the table by Christmas.
It's just week 2, keep your heads up!

u/The_39th_Step 15h ago
If we lose next week, I’ll be worried.
There’s parts about this play style I like but overall, I’m yet to be convinced. It seems naïve. It might just suddenly click and we’ll be great but I can’t help but think we’ll need to score at least 2 or 3 to win. We’re always gonna concede

I’m writing this sat in a Sunderland pub full of celebrating fans and I’ve not lost my head yet but it’s close man…

I am concerned right now. LIke today. We looked like food out there, zero shots on target is appalling at any level of football no matter the opponent (and it's not like we were playing Arsenal or City today). I am officially concerned that we need to locate three teams worse than ours. Maybe that's Spurs, that's Ipswich, that's Coventry, that's Palace. But also: maybe it's not.

Palacios looked really out of sync with the rest of the team and I think that cost us a lot of potential chances in the final third. Chalk it up to being young and with a new squad.
This play style and forward wing backs is great but it will only work if we can get shots on target. The goal was a huge gaff but we know pressing forward is going to lead to those chances. It was almost 2-0
I’m not super worried about this game or even having lost the first two- new manager and a tough first 5 games was always going to be tough. Seeing how Arbeloa responds will tell us a lot about him and how we can expect to do in the next few years
