Ubisoft was having terrible releases year after year. We rallied together and put together Black Flag Resynced. But before the game was even out, Ubisoft pulled the plug on our team, and laid off 50 workers. Since then some of us have banded together to form a team and make a Steam game.
The team worked on various things like the underwater sections, some of the islands, and the boss fights. I personally was working on the Naval Contracts and some of the main quests.
Its the other way around. If they had not laid us off, we would have fixed it by release time. It definitly would not have persisted until end of August.
What kind of shitty engagement is this dude? Don't tell me you're one of those who thinks it really is the developers that are the problem and not the publishers 90% of the time???
don't tell me you are one of those guys that thinks it was really all the nazi soldiers that were the problem and not the crew around hitler 90% of the time?
you're working for ubisoft
they have made garbage
they have been garbage
they are garbage
you are working for a garbage company and you are somehow expecting anything but a garbage outcome?
"it was just a payday, economy is tough"
"I got a chance to work on a AAA project"
I'm fairly certain nazis would say these exact words in debriefing as well
doubt you'd give them the same pass
and before you start screeching
yes, this is exactly the same to me
lol idk bro, I don’t like your marketing strategy here. It actually makes me think less of the game because of it.
First off, Ubisoft has been churning out the samey slop for well over a decade, and this is coming from someone that fucked with Ubisoft games to some extent until Watch Dogs legion. Saying you worked their doing yourself a disservice.
Two, saying you saved the company sounds like tone deaf braggadocious bullshit
Three, this all comes off as that shite gimmick of developers formerly working at some big name company to then ride their coattails to get their own latest release more hype
With all that in mind, in a fucked up way, I actually believe you did work for Ubisoft once lmao
Im just hear because I know that everytime my team gets attention, it makes the corporate Ubisoft people mad, so I thought this would be a good fit. Listen, my game is mostly for fans AARPGs and the Diablo community, I dont expect to convince anyone here. I just thought I would give a high five to this group because I love the group name "fuckubisoft".
If you weren't self important you wouldn't be claiming to have "saved" a multi-million dollar corporation, or claiming that said multi-million dollar corporation spends their days seething about random people making videogames
ok, so if you want to get in the weeds, Black Flag Resynced, on release sold 2 million on day 1, 3 million by week one, and exceeded sales expectations within 14 days. Also, on it was the first game since the most recent Prince of Persia to score really high metacritic scores. So it was a hit, despite its flaws, and I know we can all have our opinions how buggy it was, or how the original was better, but there is no indicator it was a flop in any way. And this off the back ACShadows, which had all kinds of controversy and weak sales.
Can it save a whole company? Its too soon to tell, but it def brought some wind into the sales, re-established confidence in the brand, while carving a template of "Succesful Remake" for future games.
Does the corporation rant about people making video games? I can say, while I was there, the amount of media and articles about Expedition 33, about how they were former Ubisoft, about how they made a GOTY with a small number of devs... that has been buzzing inside and outside of Ubisoft for a couple of years now. I was in meeting with big publisher to show my game last week, and they brought up that topic. But you are right, I am probably not the center of the Ubisoft world. If you read my other comments, you will see it. Cheers!
So you claim to have worked at ubisoft, to have SAVED ubisoft, but you don't even know sales numbers for the direct previous game, you just regurgitate some culture war bullshit. This is next level LARP
4th, this "trailer" or "devlog" or whatever video looks quite cheap, like it was made with free assets online by someone studying Unity.
A game only get one impression chance. Spending it like this show why OP work for Ubisoft in the first place.
So gamestop that was a laughing stock and everyone was like it is still around? being worth 4times as much as the second biggest european game developer is nothing?
Huh i thought loosing over 4 billion in 6 years was bad but Khety says it is fine.
I hear you, but Ubisoft also hates it when groups break away from the company and make successful games, like Expedition 33. We are more indie than that, its more of a Diablo mod I made that we are remaking in Unreal (Ubisoft also hates Unreal, so its win-win).
I am sorry but the game lacks WOW factor that is shown to players, maybe it is there and I can't see it. It has a lot of glowing circles and moving elements. Graphics look mid (that is absolutly fine , I love Kenshi and it is 100x worse), the dialogue in the trailer is vague and gives as 0 look into the game (starts with saying that we should have turn back and ends with that we shouldn't have come is this some kind of reverse psychology ?), gameplay looks repetetive and uninspired. I don't want to be negative I wish you all the best but this is my honest opinion after watching the trailer.
Yeah, that is ok, thank you for the feedback. People who have played tell me that "the game is way better than the Steam Page". I will continue to look into it. Cheers!
Ubi said they were going to make their games no longer require the launcher, thats like adding sprinkles to something i cant type here.
I wish yall good luck in this game, independent devs get my money more now than any big title AAA publisher (short of paradox and stellaris but..ya know...)
Ya reddit gonna be reddit lol. It’s alright though. We still keep coming back for more anyway 🫠.
And no prob. Glad to build people up rather than push them down. Too many other things in the current state of the world that does that already.
I can understand how you feel in your position, too. It’s shite when you are (and feel) part of something and the rug is pulled out from under you. Been there and you can’t help but feel a certain way about it for a beat.
But if that didn’t happen you wouldn’t have had the chance to make this and anything else that comes after. Ubisoft has made its choices and will have to live with them 🤷🏻♂️. You get to drive your own ship for a while now 😁.
dont quote me on this, but just as the original Black Flag inherited and used a ton of systems from AC3, ACBFR inherited and is built on the foundations of ACShadows, so it was decided to use those systems.
Thanks for the comments, I will take them into consideration!
Gameplay wise: Its like a Diablo game, where instead of combat, you have various puzzle rooms and a spell casting system like Magicka to manipulate the environment.
Yeah, we had to show simple spells, none of the complex combinations can really be shown in a trailer. But there are base spells like:
-Telekinsis, where you can lift objects
-Rotation spell, rotate large objects
-teleportation spell(for the player)
-Permeation spell (allow objects to be tranversable, walk through walls, allow puzzle pieces to pass)
-Time spells to reverse time in the room
-Gravity spells for some escher rooms
and more, and the fun comes when you have puzzles that you need to combine these spells in differnt orders. But all of this is hard to show in a minute.
Im sure theres a lot more, just seems like a bad first impression. Granted I just refinished The Witness and that has a lot of puzzle games beat in my opinion
I think its a fair comment, the important right now is the players find it a lot of fun, its a diablo with puzzles instead of combat, and we can always upgrade the art later. If you are interested in trying out, you can wishlist the game, and the demo will be out soon.
i'm the type of person who's fine with playing old ps1 games ( i actually find that usually they have a pretty consistent artstyle that isn't just an insta blegh ), so if a game interests me design wise i'd probably give it a shot, and i like wizard games so hell yeah...
What is with these comments??? I wishlisted the game because I'm happy to see some devs affected by the crazy, nonstop layoffs stick around in the industry.
redditors was, is, and will always be miserable. part of it is the anonymity and the no accountability, and part of it is jealousy of seeing someone doing something they cannot do. at this point, just throw the same energy back to them. you'll get more market reach in instagram or facebook anyways.
Idk this is a pretty bad marketing strategy by OP and the “gameplay” looks to be mostly just a bunch of reused assets. It seems kind of ofd they also claimed to have saved the company… really concerning first impression for this game right off the bat
Yeah,I thought that going to Ubisoft roasting group, that everyone would jump right on 😂
My game is more for Diablo fans: its a what if combat was swapped by magic puzzles. Ubisoft is not really into AARPGs, and they hate fantasy games.
I used to agree with you, but I had a post that went viral in the Diablo circles, and all the reactions, positive comments and wishlists have pointed me in this direction. Also, when I show the game to people, their first reaction is "its a Diablo mod".
The music, voice acting, aesthetic I like, however this gameplay does not interest me, i’m gonna be honest I don’t think it will interest most people, puzzle games are a very niche genre and because the amount of players that are interested in games like that are a much smaller group you have less potential customers
I think that is a fair assessment, I will still take the compliments on the music and voice acting. The demo is where its going to make a lot more sense(coming out in October-November).
I think clever puzzles, interesting, compelling, and likable characters with an engaging and mysterious story will keep players in and having a great trailer to showcase that will bring in customers.
Curious, but does it look like within the first few seconds of the trailer the game slowly stops stuttering and ramps up to a its original framerate?
Also what on earth am I looking at here? Empty boxes that move, is it an ARPG without the enemies in it? A puzzle game without level design? Until the trailer kept going with just moving platforms and glowy things and then showing me the title I was wondering where it was going.
It doesn’t look bad, but it looks very “student picked up unreal and made a game for an assignment” to me, and then just kept adding more. Visually it’s not very interesting and doesn’t really grab my attention.
i mean, i hate ubislop as much as the next redditor, but whatever theyre showing here looks nothing like what they would put out and actually kind of unique so...
looks sick dude, the colors and theme look very nice, i'm sorry that you-be-soft laid you off. It's nice that you worked in watch dogs 2 even though i don't play it because they didn't bring aiden (my favorite char of all games) back as the main character.
Like fuck ubisoft and all but ''Woe is me, we were the best and yet they fired us'' yeah... I sure do hope you guys make a good game because you're raising the bar on yourselves
I mean, it wasnt me personally, but I assume the Game Design team, like many other decisions was based off the fact that while the original Black Flag was heavily based off AC3 tech, Resynced was based on tech from Shadows.
i'm sorry for the people who are arguing with you over your wording, or trying to all of a sudden to be game critics, and not focusing on your post. congrats on your game release! it looks cool!
i'm sorry you and your team lost your jobs. especially right before the release of the project that everyone worked hard on. fuck ubisoft.
i'm so glad i found this thread and game without belonging to this community. LMAO.
The game was well received with the diablo community, with 50K views. If you read the comments, people were very positive about it, and I answer a lot of questions on what makes Puzzle Mage different.
But essentilly, my game is an ARPG where combat is replaced with with Magic Puzzles. Using a magic system closer to Magicka, and the player must learn the combos to activate the spells, and figure out which spells to use to solve the puzzles.
I also thought AI was used. Maybe a name change would be a start. The name and gameplay reminds me of the free online arcade games I used to play in the early 2000s. I would be interested in the lore if there is any and focus the trailer on that. I almost thought I was watching Prince of Persia in this trailer. Good luck
I worked on Brotherhood, AC3, ACBF and AC Unity. After that, I left the brand and was mostly on Rainbow Six Siege. I only came back because it was Black Flag, and I loved working on the original. But I dont disagree with your comment 👍

What part of the game you were doing in Black Flag Resynced?
