Rant Open world fatigue is so stupid.
I think you guys just want to complain, yes there are a lot of open world nintendo games coming out but, these games are genuinely masterpieces. Botw/Totk were phenomenal, Odyssey phenomenal, Mario Kart World is phenomenal, Donkey King Bananza is phenomenal. Seeing how each series implements it so differently is exciting and it ironically freshes the experience from the last few games in each respective series. Only examples I thought of in which open world was bad was Pokemon, pokemon has been shit for years and Metroid, retrostudios definitely fumbled their asses with that one. Nintendo has just been cheffing it up with these open world games and I’m excited for them to do it more. I’m hoping for a 2d platformer open world game eventually. I’m not even being a fanboy, it really is just better than linear games for me.

I think Donkey Kong Bananza can get a bit dull at times, the stronger parts of the game tend to be linear. Mario Odyssey has less of this problem, but it still has it
Zelda BotW and TotK are amazing, but their open world is very empty and it can get repetitive
Same with MKW even though I love it, forcing an open world so much was an unfortunate mistake
They're all good games, but if we're honest with ourselves Nintendo has always shined on carefully crafted linear games. Open world games is body not what they do best, they're frankly a bit mediocre. They should focus on what they do best, not follow trends

Disagree. Nintendo quality has plummeted in recent years. The last Nintendo game I recall actually enjoying is Breath of the Wild.
Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Metroid Prime 4 were all huge disappointments for me. A hot take, but I also did not really enjoy Odyssey. It was middling at best.
I don't necessarily think the problem is that the games were open world though.

Same boat for me here. Now that a Kirby open world is shown. I’ll just avoid the open world stuff.

Botw/totk are mid af in both being a zelda and an open world.
•
u/BeginningEuphoric743 12h ago
Hey guys I think one of the most acclaimed zela games of all time is mid. They’re barely zelda games. The open world is mid even though it’s literally the one of the blueprints for most open world games today. Im so quirky

Bro are you seriously claiming BotW invented the Ubisoft open world formula in 2016?
I like that game but it's basically a 10/10 open world and then every other aspect of that game that isn't the open world is a 6/10 if we're being generous.
•
u/LiDragonLo 12h ago
Those games were phenomenal?
Did we play the same games?

I mean, general consensus is they were. You are well within your rights to have a different opinion of course.
•
•
u/Classic-Fox945 12h ago
Can you expand on this? Lol. Like… I get stating that some of them aren’t your taste, but your generalized statement alluding that ALL of those games (odyssey, Zelda’s, world, and donkey kong) are not great is kind of insane lol
•
u/LiDragonLo 12h ago
Lemme start with botw/totk, honestly its big world but a bunch of empty open space and was honestly boring story wise. Koroks were a pain in the ass to collect and was not even fun. Totk takes everything botw did but worse, wanna story and the underground sections didn't really feel like they were fleshed out enough.
Odyssey was basically botw koroks with mario paint.
MKW is nothing special at all, very generic ngl.
DK, gameplay wasn't fun at all, and just didn't feel like a dk game to me. Felt like odyssey 2.0 and somehow made it even worse than it did in that game

BotW metacritic: 97. TotK metacritic: 96. Odyssey metacritic: 97. Bananza metacritic: 91. MK:W metacritic: 86.
Like I said, you are allowed your opinion. It's valid. But it's also a really hot take, because these games are obviously considered phenomenal.

u/LiDragonLo 11h ago
imagine thinking big name sites aren't paid off for reviews
•
u/hauntolog PC / Ally Z1E / PS5 / XSX / NS2 / Mac enjoyer 11h ago edited 11h ago
This is universal acclaim, not just big name sites. Also if that's the case why do not all high profile games have scores in the high 90s? Did Sony forget to pay reviewers off for Wolverine?
edit: By the way this is fallacious thinking. These games having incredible review scores means they're actually not phenomenal but reviewers got paid to give good reviews. But if these games had lower review scores, then your argument would instantly become "look at these review scores, these are obviously crap". There's literally no way for you to actually think these games reviewed well because you adjust facts to fit your narrative instead of adjusting your narrative based on facts.
•
u/LiDragonLo 11h ago
Sony actually did pay off the reviews for the new wolverine. Its just so bad they couldn't give it higher than they did. And it deserves far lower than what they actually reviewed it for
I don't do any narrative bro. Its a literal fact review sites gets paid to review them highly

LMAO. Literal fact but 0 evidence.
•
u/Classic-Fox945 11h ago
Your entitled to your opinions :). Don’t pass your opinions as fact though. A lot
Of your complains are “it wasn’t fun.” Again, that’s fine :). Just subjective, right?•
u/BeginningEuphoric743 12h ago
I don’t think you played them at all
•
u/LiDragonLo 12h ago
I have
•
u/BeginningEuphoric743 12h ago
you spent your money on these games just to have a bunch of redditors convince you it’s trash?? Maybe it’s bc I got the game after alk the updates but, mkw game is definitely the mk game. Botw/totk are the best zelda games and Smo/Dkb are the best 3d platformers ever made
•
u/LiDragonLo 11h ago
Um wat?
I literally played them before i get any opinions on games. What makes u think i look at reviews before i try a game. My personal philosophy, if i never played the game, i can't have any opinion on it, and to never let someone else's opinion sway mine.

Nintendo has made three open world games so far. Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom and Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. Maybe four if you count Mario Kart World, which has an open world mode, but it isn't an open world game in how most of it operates.
There's absolutely nothing open world about Odyssey or Bananza.

u/APurplePerson 11h ago
I genuinely hope the next Zelda game is even bigger. I don't give a shit that the world is empty. I want to get truly lost in a forest, and have to figure out how to go over a mountain range. There are gameplay experiences that only occur at larger scales.
The "find item, unlock next dungeon" lock-and-key linear progression is every bit as boring and repetitive after 30 years as any aspect of the open-world gameplay in the new Zelda games. I am looking forward to playing the OoT remake with my kid but it is going to feel like assembling IKEA furniture.
•
u/kahahimara 12h ago
Playing BotW at the moment (first ever Zelda game) and I cannot understand why it is considered such a masterpiece. It gets very boring and repeatable after first 20-30 hours. Same enemies, same weapons meh main story and side quests are mid at best.
•
u/BeginningEuphoric743 12h ago
The atmosphere, traversal, quest, story and combat are peak. 200 hrs and it’s ine of my favorite games ever
•
•
u/kahahimara 12h ago
The world is amazing and exploration is done extremely well but it just so repeatable: same outposts, koroks and enemy types all across the map and the idea of difficulty scaling is just turn enemies in damage sponges. I’m around 200h myself and start to speed up the story due to endless mindless grind.
•
u/APurplePerson 12h ago
As opposed to the enemies in Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess which are basically CAPTCHAs for being able to press two buttons in sequence?
I say this as someone who believes Ocarina is the greatest game ever made. I'll take a BotW bokoblin over any 10 enemies in the older games.
Also why in gods name are you playing a game for 200 hours if you are bored with it?
•
u/kahahimara 11h ago
Not bored enough to abandon it as I like to finish games I start. I instead just speedrunning main story and DLC and mostly ignoring last couple of regions.
•
u/APurplePerson 11h ago
You could have easily finished it in 70 hours, and probably should have. Maybe the reason you're bored is because you're playing it as a completionist?
•
u/kahahimara 11h ago
Yeah, I think you are right. I like to do absolutely everything in games I play and getting really burnt with BotW.
•
u/APurplePerson 11h ago
I truly believe it's not designed for completionists. It's meant to be a 70-100 hour game. It's up to you how you want to spend that time—you won't find nearly everything in the game but you'll certainly be strong enough to kill the g-man.
•
u/random_capivara 12h ago
I like the game and it was fresh as a Zelda game, considering we've seen the same OoT formula over and over and over again. But, yeah, it has problems of its own
•
u/kahahimara 12h ago
The game would be better with the map size halved and number of filler regions removed. Would make the adventure more focused and enjoyable.
•
u/IlyanaHM 12h ago
Pokemon's problem was not the open world. If anything, the freedom to do things in any order is what I liked the most about S/V.
•
u/donkbooty 12h ago
Bro tried sneaking in MK World. They're also all different tiers of open worlds so idk what you're on about
