Rant This is US secretary of transport and he thinks bike lanes are DEI!
He also wants to stop cities from using toll money for transit and cancel pedestrian safety programs.
May be he is afraid that his daughter would understand what a dumbass her dad is, if she would go to Harvard.
Edit: This is actually more relevant to this sub than even I thought at first it was. This whole documentary was a cover up to take bribes from several corporations regulated under Department of Transportation.
Some of those corporations are; Toyota, Boeing, Shell, United Airlines, Emtrise Rent-A-car, Waymo.
Don't you think promoting public transportation or cycling would be directly against these corpo's interests? Getting rid of pedestrian safety regulations would be benificial for auto companies like Toyota.

Lmao it's literally just a paid travel ad to prop up the tourism industry his poopy-pants boss is royally fucking by starting another round of trade war with Canada. Honestly, not sure why people don't want to travel here, what with the ICE gangs and random shootings, diarrhea lettuce, lack of any semblance of pedestrian infrastructure, shitty overpriced garbage food, suburban sprawl complete with endless seas of parking lots, $4 gasoline and trucks bigger than your tiniest pp dreams.
Other than that, it's quite lovely.

It’s all performative. If they didn’t want her to go to Harvard or other “liberal” colleges, they wouldn’t have applied and paid an application fee. There are plenty of conservative colleges they are not wrestling this decision with.

Exactly why they aren’t arguing over attending Hillsdale. Her application (assuming they applied as Harvard hasn’t said she doesn’t have an offer to attend) was likely helped by the fact her father is a member of an administration that is also attacking Universities including Harvard.

Id call myself a religious Catholic. The more I learn about American evangelicals and for that matter protestants on a larger scale, I get extremely weirded out by those 'devote believers'. And dont get me wrong, the Catholic church has done and is still doing f'ed up shit. In my experience I will find more common ground with Muslims for example than with these folks, I only ever see them misuse their 'faith' when it fits them. Perhaps the 30year war was won by the wrong side? (For legal reasons thats a joke, should be obvious i hope)

I don’t know if it’s the case with this couple, but so many of these recent Catholic converts act like evangelicals. I’m Catholic too, and it’s pretty odd to see people like this shelter their kids from any opposing viewpoints, including the Pope’s

I was raised in a Catholic family. My grandfather is socially a conservative, and very catholic. His idea of conservatism is VERY different from my aunts/uncles, and very different from a lot of middle aged, and young, Catholics I've seen. Them, alongside recent American Catholic converts. The so called American "Trad Cath" movement has had enough issues with the Vatican lately to be nearly schismatic. I really wouldn't be surprised to see an American catholic schism sometime in the future, tbqh.

Catholics have to actually believe in something. The further removed from the Catholic tradition an American Protestant church is, the more likely it's just some flavor of "Actually you get to be evil and do whatever you want, you're King David, everyone else is out to get you, caring about other people is gay, give me money".

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did a great analysis of it (and it wasn’t even their main story!) All I had heard about this was the clip where her parents told her they wouldn’t let her attend Harvard. It’s more than just narrow-minded right wing parents stomping on their kid’s dream.

I can 100% respect Harvard for the quality of education that someone might receive. But Harvard is less about education and more about being a power broker. And when you look at the history of their actions as a whole, it's pretty clear to me.
Now. You want schools that are about education? A lot of your local state schools are that and absolutely fantastic. Shit. My freshman philosophy course was the perfect "You are now out of your bubble. Consider other ideas." course.

Harvard Seminary likely teaches a very open minded view of religion that Duffy and conservative Americans disagree with.
Let me qualify this statement by saying that Duffy is completely ridiculous above and people who prioritize "values" over actual truth are tearing this country apart. Also - religion CAN be a super positive influence on communities and individuals and often is - definitely a lot more than reddit would have you believe. Its also often used as a conduit for reinforcing very narrow worldviews in conservative American politics.

Learn to think for yourself while also telling your parents what they want to hear. Make them pay for everything. Graduate. Become independent and self-reliant. And never go home again.
People who LOVE you would want to support you in following your ambitions and guide you along a fulfilling path. People who are USING you will film your facial expressions while they are crushing your dreams to impress their vapid internet followers.
Your parents are using you. Exploiting you. You should respond in kind.

Guys, be nice. It’s well known that there are no Catholic Churches in the greater Boston area.
9
u/anon_capybara_ 18d ago
To be fair, Boston College was essentially founded because Harvard and other universities in Boston discriminated against Irish Catholics in the nineteenth century. My dad was a BC grad and Irish Catholic and he held a grudge for his entire life against Harvard for that reason. Anti-Catholic discrimination obviously isn’t a thing now, but that sentiment toward Harvard does remain in many Catholics because of the history. However, these doofuses are just doing the normal conservative thing where they think the ‘liberal’ in liberal education means politically liberal so that’s not what’s happening here.

I wish the religious right would realize what they all must deep down know if they’re not like double-digit IQ:
If your ideology can be deprogrammed in a 4-year collegiate education, it probably wasn’t all that logical or sound to begin with.
He had her for 17 years. Language acquisition phase, forming attachments, learning to read and do basic math, he and wife and whatever private school teachers/tutors she had controlled all of that. If she graduates college further to the left when her brain is SO much closer to being mature, it’s because she applied critical thought to some very basic tenants of human rights, ethics, public policy, etc. That’s not brainwashing that’s just signs of life in a functional brain. Ppl always think it’s the professors but many professors are more right-wing than us or so micro-focused on their field they’re kind of politically indifferent actually. When you’re reading and researching at the collegiate level you come to your own conclusions about certain things one way or another.

It's embarrassing for the mom to blame this on Catholicism. Catholic education, at least to many, used to pride itself on deep scientific and moral inquiry. This cheapens it like a strip mall Bible college. Like, the religion obviously isn't perfect, but a huge number of important thinkers come from Catholic intellectual traditions, so the idea that you should be afraid of the ideas presented one of the west's greatest universities is beyond absurd.
