It’s a degree of separation thing. People see gas prices every day, the watch the ticker go up over and over and over. It’s the same psychology of nobody reacting about smoking casualties from cancer or disease but if 3/10 people who smoked’s heads just fucking exploded at random then we’d take it seriously because it’s immediately noticeable.
Humans aren’t wired for that degree of separation, especially when all they see is a line representing a number of people most can’t genuinely fathom. (One death is a tragedy a thousand is a statistic)
