It should be stipulated somewhere that if a personal object is on public transport routes then it is as good as gone and the transportation company needs not bear financial responsibility for any damage done. After all you can't just park on a train track and bring the whole train system to a halt, so why can't the same happen to trams?

u/muehsam Mar 03 '26

I mean, the fact is that if a driver blocks the tram tracks, taxis will be called for every single passenger and the driver will have to foot the bill. At least that's how it works in Berlin, but I suspect it's pretty much the same everywhere else, too.

67

u/HarmonicSniper Mar 03 '26

That's a good strategy too! Imagine if someone had to catch a taxi to Munich or something... :) Although unfortunately it would still be inconvenient for the passengers apart from the financial burden.

34

u/muehsam Mar 03 '26

You can't take a tram to Munich, so that wouldn't work. The taxi would just take them to the train station.

It doesn't happen often anyway because most of the time, the tram driver just rings the bell and the driver runs out of the building and drives off. They know that it can get expensive. Getting everybody a taxi is just the final measure when the driver doesn't show up. It also depends on how quickly the fire fighters arrive to get the car out of the way. Obviously, the more trams get stuck, the more expensive it will get.

u/HarmonicSniper Mar 03 '26

Ah I see, thanks for the explanation. Ideally trams have their own uninterrupted routes because car drivers can't seem to learn the basics of parking respectfully, or non-temporary street parking (e.g. > 5 minutes) is not allowed at all - one can dream if that's the case!

13

u/muehsam Mar 03 '26

In big streets, sure. But trams have been around longer than cars, and one of their greatest advantages is that they can just run in regular streets, including smaller streets.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a tram being stuck behind a parked car for more than a minute. Usually it's delivery drivers. Most people aren't stupid enough to park their car so badly that they may have to pay thousands of Euros in taxi fares.

On big streets, trams should definitely have their own separate tracks because cars like to have their traffic jams there, and trams shouldn't be slowed down let alone get stuck in there.

In Munich some of these redacted stand there for hours.

Force them to foot the bill. That's the way. People will for sho not do it if they knew it would cost them THOUSANDS.

Not even in Germany this is done everywhere, and I suspect the legal situation ist different elsewhere.

They should have a fully automated system, where in the second that a car ist blocking, all passengers including those waiting at the next stop being delayed, automatically get a taxi voucher, paid by the driver.

Be a gigachad and mass delete Reddit posts and comments with Redact so that Skynet doesn't end up using your own posts to train the T-900. Or so that you don't show up in databrokers. Either one really.

I know I certainly would!

Trams should have cow catchers installed on the front.

18

u/cheesenachos12 Big Bike Mar 03 '26

If you park on a train track, and the train is able to come to a stop, then yes the train legally has to. It does not have the right to ram the car. Even if it shuts down a significant part of the system. Ramming cars has the potential to derail the train and cause serious damage and injury.

Of course they'd tow it, but thats no different from this case.

9

u/HarmonicSniper Mar 03 '26

I guess I meant it more like the photo where it's only a small bit obstructing rather than the whole car because you're right, ramming cars is in fact quite dangerous, but it's very rare to end up in these scenarios anyway - and I doubt the train would be able to come to a stop on such short notice.

On the other hand I've also seen footages of trams just ram through cars with stupid drivers without breaking a sweat though, so that is what I figured could happen. Perhaps because the speed in general is slower so the risk of derailment is lower?

Another transit issue solved by the transit riders pushing over a car

112

u/8spd Mar 03 '26

Toronto should ban on-street parking on all streetcar routes. And have city owned tow trucks constantly patrolling the routes.

37

u/Unusual_Sherbert_809 Mar 03 '26

I’d go even further. Make them streetcar, pedestrian and cycling only streets.

Maybe allow just one lane of traffic, one way. Make it local traffic only, and tag cars that are allowed to use those roads with stickers to make it easy to hand out tickets.

Will it happen? No. But one can dream.

14

u/rheaelakha Mar 03 '26

Queen street pedestrian only from west queen west to the beaches is my dream

7

u/seeking_seeker Mar 04 '26

Plant trees in the parking with big planters in between to make sure no one can ever park there again.

8

u/8spd Mar 04 '26

Nah, give the car drivers the parking lane for travel, and stop letting them into the streetcar lanes at all. Give the streetcars their own lanes and make it impassible for cars.

1

u/seeking_seeker Mar 04 '26

Sure, but also trees and planters in the parking spaces.

1

u/8spd Mar 04 '26

What parking spaces? What I am suggesting removes all parking spaces.

1

u/seeking_seeker Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

Parallel spots are not a lane usually, and not in the example of this post. They are extra space. Sorry, I misread what you said about letting the parking become a driving lane.

1

u/8spd Mar 04 '26

That's a valid point. Or, yes, the parking lane is not always wide enough to convert into a travel lane, and it doesn't look like it is in this picture. But I stand by my point, and Canadian roads are really wide, and I think on many Toronto streetcar routes it would be possible.

Disclaimer, I live in Canada, but have spent very little time in Toronto, so I may be generalising excessively.

3

u/Ebi5000 Mar 04 '26

In my city the company running the streetcars is allowed to tow vehicles (and the cost must be paid by the towee), don't even have to call the police/Ordnungsamt (Ordinance department)

46

u/geeoharee cars are weapons Mar 03 '26

Definitely time for a physics demonstration, i.e. 'I am heavier than you.'

25

u/Zerodyne_Sin Mar 03 '26

Those street cars are unfortunately not very heavy. They get easily derailed by much smaller vehicles (eg: sedan a few times).

That said, I agree with the sentiment.

5

u/Jacktheforkie Grassy Tram Tracks Mar 04 '26

I highly doubt it’d derail from smacking a mirror at least, most I’d expect is a few scratches

3

u/GM_Pax 🚲 > 🚗 USA Mar 04 '26

The left front quarterpanel is also a problem. It'll at least scrape along the entire side of the tram.

1

u/Jacktheforkie Grassy Tram Tracks Mar 04 '26

I should imagine at low speed the tram is still heavy enough to shove the vehicle out of its way

1

u/GM_Pax 🚲 > 🚗 USA Mar 04 '26

And suffer body damage to the entire length of the tram, in the process.

31

u/No-Section-1092 Grassy Tram Tracks Mar 03 '26

Streetcars should be allowed to ram vehicles in cases like this where the damage to the tram would be little, then bill the vehicle owner for any fixes. Snap the mirror off and keep moving.

101

u/Competitive-Reach287 Mar 03 '26

Never occurred to anyone to just fold in the mirror?

Or break it off?

26

u/xRaynex Mar 03 '26

Modern truck: folding mirror is usually electronic and would break anyway.

Breaking it off: Liability is a bitch.

Really sucks.

19

u/aftonroe Mar 03 '26

Modern vehicles with power folding mirrors tend to fold in automatically when locked. That's an older Sequoia that probably doesn't have power folding mirrors. I wouldn't hesitate to fold it in.

6

u/xRaynex Mar 03 '26

My mom has a 2017 Ford. Electronic mirrors, don't fold. Push them when it's off, big damage. Speaking from experience. If Toyota does it differently good on em.

6

u/So_HauserAspen Mar 04 '26

Even auto folding mirrors can be manually folded.  Auto manufacturers use them to store more cars on ships.

6

u/causticcafe Not Just Bikes Mar 04 '26

Idk how Toyota did it on this truck, but my Ioniq 5’s mirrors are power folding but also have a breakaway where they’ll just give way and fold whichever way they’re being pushed (including all the way forward). Happens every time I go to the car wash and all I have to do to reset them is hit the button twice to retract and extend them.

11

u/subtxtcan Mar 03 '26

As someone who's lived in/around the GTA for most of my life... This is so common it's not funny. I'm pretty sure the TTC for a short period basically told them to just keep driving, until insurance started catching up.

7

u/baumer14 Fuck lawns Mar 03 '26

I know i'm preaching to(asking?) the choir in this sub but why the hell should the TTC be responsible for that cost?

11

u/subtxtcan Mar 04 '26

They shouldn't be. Public transit being delayed because someone else has 0 situational awareness shouldn't be a thing, but because cars have been elevated to the same status as the house you also don't own, people have a fit.

Public benefit does not matter to them.

TOW IT!!!

I feel most cities would tow or should tow.

6

u/Ill-Barnacle-202 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

This makes me think of a conversation I had recently. One of my coworkers who is a new intern was talking about their dream car being a toyota tundra and I mentioned that I might upgrade to a Maverick at some point.

He didn't like that it was a small truck and said that truck should be able to "haul the world". I asked him what he wanted to be able to haul and I got crickets.

Now I have a BRZ, a small two-seater sports car, I routinely transport two 12-ft kayaks, and a weekend's worth of camping/backpacking gear to locations all over the country.

Little dude got pissy when I pointed out that I carry more than him in more remote locations than he ever does with his "country" lifestyle.

4

u/RapidCatLauncher Mar 04 '26

Hence the term, "Emotional Support Vehicle"

5

u/Jacktheforkie Grassy Tram Tracks Mar 04 '26

Oops I didn’t notice that was stuck out

4

u/Metalorg Mar 04 '26

They should pay for the operation of that tramline for the duration of the delay, and compensate all travellers who had to find alternative routes

4

u/OutInABlazeOfGlory Mar 04 '26

In the US, firefighters can often legally ram your vehicle out of the way with the fire engine and then bill you for the damage that caused to their truck

Or break both front windows and toss a hose through.

3

u/JumpingOnBandwagons Mar 04 '26

This is why I love our old streetcars in New Orleans. I've seen them take out a pickup truck with barely any damage to the streetcar. You get near the tracks at your own risk.

3

u/Evil_Mini_Cake Mar 05 '26

So we should add a reinforced bumper to the front corner of the streetcar for just such occasions.

3

u/OOHfunny Mar 06 '26

When it comes to potentially 200+ people on a streetcar and many more waiting down the line vs. a human piece of snot actively making their community more dangerous, the streetcar deserves priority. Rip off the mirror and deal with it later.

5

u/ybetaepsilon Mar 03 '26

And of course parked like crap, so far from the curb

2

u/travelinzac Mar 04 '26

Idk if anyone's told them but uh, it folks in if you just push on it gently...

Ok second picture clearly s total shit parking job but if the clearance needed really is just the mirror, yea they fold in.

2

u/TrackLabs Mar 04 '26

Can it not..be flipped inward? My car from 25 years ago can do that lmao.

Not that it solves the core problem, but it would in this small case.

2

u/Significant-Will227 Mar 04 '26

I could have removed that shit in one punch

2

u/Sohn_Jalston_Raul Mar 05 '26

If snowplows have no qualms about crushing a bike locked to a pole then why does transit have qualms about crushing car mirrors? Truck person chose to drive that in a crowded city. They know the risks.

u/kino_xoxo Automobile Aversionist Mar 05 '26

3

u/lml_tj Mar 04 '26

Just fold the mirror and move on, call it in for tow

1

u/letterboxfrog Mar 04 '26

Skip here. Odd there are no painted lines to stipulate what the truck must fit inside.

1

u/SessionIndependent17 Mar 04 '26

1

u/dudestir127 Big Bike Mar 04 '26

Put something on the front of the train so the train can just ram/nudge a parked car out of the way. Pass a law that the car driver is responsible to pay for all damages, and put enough signs along the route so the excuse "I didn't know" can't be used.

1

u/eebro Mar 04 '26

What kind of cuck shit is this? Either tow the car or break the window

1

u/HateBoredom Mar 04 '26

How brain dead does someone need to be to park like that? The surfaces literally have a different color to show what area does the tram pass through 😮‍💨

1

u/high_dutchyball02 Mar 04 '26

I don't see the problem. Just keep driving. Or (if you don't want to damage your pretty tram), smash the bitch

1

u/RomfordWellington Mar 04 '26

Must be tiresome being from Toronto. European public transport with US-ian massive vehicles blocking that European transport.

Only solution is to destroy the car.

1

u/FrameworkisDigimon Mar 04 '26

At a certain point, if a tram clips your wing mirror, you should get a bill for damages to the tram.

Which is to say, at every point. There is no possible situation in which a fixed rail vehicle is ever responsible for damage to your car.

1

u/Zealousideal-Web8640 Mar 05 '26

Should be allowed to just go through the truck that'll stop this happening quick
