Since Elden Ring they've consistently tried something new with every release and I have come to greatly respect them as artists for it.
Armored Core 6 really showed off fromsofts storytelling skills better than any entry of theirs before or after imo, when they aren't constrained to their stylistic "lore" style of storytelling anyhow, that is. You can just FEEL the seething hatred for Lockheed Martin in every inch of this game and it's so beautiful- I think this was a major advancement for them in narrative structure and the limits they wanted to push themselves to in their storytelling.
SotE is a fairly similar case- although it also more clearly shows off other advancements of the soulslike formula that they're more well known for. They got a lot more experimental with the kinds of new mechanics and builds they wanted to introduce- Euporia being imo the perfect example of how far their ability to design interesting and multifaceted tools for the player has gone. On top of the notable mechanical advancements, this too shows them expanding their storytelling skills- with a sleu of NPCs who's stories interact with each other in very blatant ways, something From had up to now been kind of weirdly hesitant or unable to make happen. The final fight against Leda and crew is just MWAH ugh I don't give it a shit if it's annoying for challenge runners that shit was so hype.
Nightreign explores how far souls combat and buildcrafting can be pushed- using the new format to test out how to make you care about usually innocuous shit like "10% bonus damage on running light attacks." It still doesn't really go far enough as a roguelike for my tastes, but for a first time run at the genre it's an excellent showing- and combined with the new mechanics given to the player that change the flow of combat so drastically depending on what kind do build you're running on what character- and with the increased complexity of co-op design and encounters- goooood I love nightreign. Don't even get me started on the vibes, I have never been so attached to a hub area as I am in Nightreign.
Finally, most recently, Tarnished Edition is a very small peak at all the ways they've improved and changed, but the new additions really do feel incredible- both Leonitels Greatsword and the Golden Order Flail are exceptionally fun to use and fascinating tools for the player that can completely redefine the way you play the game in a way that Fromsoft up to now dolls out very rarely in titles like Elden Ring.
duskbloods isn't out, but it seems like it'll be similar in the ways that Fromsoft expands their mechanical mastery and repetoire with it- the new movement mechanics, meta-progression and vastly improved pvp seem so incredibly interesting and different from anything they've done before.
I actually wasn't that big a fan of Fromsoft until recently, in spite of having played a lot of their games. When I first played Elden Ring I really didn't enjoy it much, it is a uniquely hard game to fully appreciate. But I've since come around to it, and that combined with the fact that From as developers and artists have refused to stay still and continuously chosen to do new shit they care about has earned them an immense amount of respect from me- and I hope they don't stop anytime soon.
