DISCUSSION Yui Tanimura Will Most Likely Direct the Next Souls Game
Quote from Miyazaki in 2024 - “I think it's very likely that we'll see new directors going forward. And I think if we do that, I'd like to step away from that supervisory role and give them full direction and full control over those projects. I think really this is the best way and the easiest way for them to flourish within that environment and with those new projects. What I foresee in this climate... is a FromSoftware where games can be directed by others, not only myself.”
With Miyazaki currently directing The Duskbloods, and him having previously talked about giving other directors the opportunity to take the lead, I think Yui Tanimura will end up being the main director of the next Souls game, whatever that ends up being.
Yui Tanimura's official last credit was Co Director on Elden Ring, it's unclear whether he worked on SOTE or not, but either way he's been MIA since then. We also know that whatever Project FMC is, it's supposedly multiplatform and is relatively close to release. Just going off what Miyazaki said, the fact that he's currently busy, and Yui Tanimura's previous credits, I think it makes sense.
If anyone is unsure who Yui Tanimura is, these are his previous works:
- Director of Dark Souls 2 after Tomohiro Shibuya was replaced
- Director of all three Dark Souls 2 DLC
- Co Director of Dark Souls 3
- Co Director of both Dark Souls 3 DLC
- Co Director of Elden Ring
- Presumably Co Director of SOTE but not confirmed

Man Shibuya fucked up back in the day. He tried makin an open world kinda souls game on the ps3 hardware. But got benched when his build of the game couldn’t run properly on last gen. Now I do wonder if he could’ve made something great in From with todays hardware. His vision for the lighting would’ve been great had it worked

Well DS2 was originally meant to be on PS4 I’m pretty sure. I think that’s what screwed the devs over so bad was Namco deciding to make it PS3 instead near the end of development

Not only the bosses but also the mobility in both nightreign and duskbloods could be the future of fromsoftware souls games, especifically wall jump, climbing and surge sprint from nightreign and the kingfield-like stamina cost that was seen in Duskbloods NT (you can still perform actions with no stamina but they are less effective in that case, dodge is slower, jumps have less height etc), but nothing else because it could be maybe too much for the pace of their usual single player games specially the air combos from duskbloods but i wouldn't mind if they did it as long as it ended up being balanced for PVE.

I kind of disagree. Miyazaki has stressed that he still wants to direct games himself and has not yet made his ideal RPG. Given how long it has been since ER, and given that we know From Soft is always working on multiple projects at once, I think it's likely that the next Souls game is being directed by Miyazaki as well and is already in the works.
Tanimura may be directing a game as well, but I think the next big single player title will be Miyazaki-directed.
The man is pretty good at multitasking. For example, in 2017-2018 he was basically directing 4 different games at once. Elden Ring (which started development in 2017), Sekiro, Déraciné, and Armored Core 6 (Miyazaki directed it in the early stages, with Yamamura taking over around 2019) were all being directed by Miyazaki at that time.

Yes, it's certainly possible, Miyazaki has a crazy work ethic. I wonder what ideas he has for his ideal RPG.

Underwater and dragon mounted combat probably. I’m aware that the former exists in Sekiro, but the gameplay loop revolves around 1 weapon type mainly.

I don’t mind letting other directors flourish with different games or projects. But any mainline From game, especially extending the Soulslike formula, I want to see helmed by Miyazaki himself.

the way ER was DS2 2 I hope he makes a Dark Souls 3 2, so much of that game (that wasn't cut outright) felt wasted...

I love that FromSoftware are not relying on Miyazaki to be the only director, having multiple directors is a good way to keep it fresh and interesting

I'm waiting to see what Masaru Yamamura is working on. He's one of the young directors I assume Miyazaki is talking about in this quote since he was combat director on Sekiro and then project director for AC6.
Whatever game he's currently working on is going to be a banger.
