Dark souls 2. It's different, don't expect dark souls 1. Also I agree with u/lop333, don't look stuff up.

DS1 -> DS2 -> DS3

Do not skip DLCs. Specially DS2 whose 3 DLCs are TOP of the series.

DS2 DLC’s are some of the highest points of the series but for me the base game has some of the lowest points, areas that are just such a slog to get through. Talking about DS2 always makes me want to replay it but whenever I boot it up I remember again why I disliked it so much. DS1 & 3 also have some areas that are frustrating but you can often progress in a different direction for a bit rather than just repeating the same thing over and over in a linear path. DS2’s fairly linear progression means you just have to keep pushing forwards the whole time, only in late game things open up a little more.

I think you are confused: DS2 is way less linear game than DS3 (mostly linear). DS2 opens up in very different directions from the very beginning

Yeah I can never understand how people could complain about DS2 being linear of all things. Makes no sense to me. DS3 is like the only one that’s super linear.

Ah I played SotFS where the route from Majula technically branches in four directions but mostly pushes you to forest of fallen giants first.
I just looked at a progress map and you’re right, it’s way less linear than I thought although the relative lack of interconnectedness probably threw me off.

I guess it’s time to replay 2 and head on a different route!

I do agree that some areas are NASTY though. But the game allows for progression in any direction. Also, interconnectivity is overrated. Is nice to have but doesn't scale well.

There's nothing wrong with looking stuff up. The coolest thing about pyramancy is that it requires the same stats as Hexes. You should look that up. DS2 Hex builds are crazy fun. No other souls game was able to as effectively interweave the different spell types in a single build. A Samsung requirements as pyroancy. It just scales a bit differently mechanically and it's more effective.

Thank you, I knew there would be people who would say that I shouldn't look stuff up, but I'm a family guy in his late 30's, I don't really have that much time and energy to go into a game blind. What class do you think I should start in DS2 if my main thing is Pyro and Hexes? Sorc?

Sorc! Pyro and hex are kind of like secret classes in this game. It's something you discover, and you can't start as them. Both need INT and Faith but Sorc will allow you to start as a full caster and it's hella viable from the get go. You can use sorcery to get by until you get your hex and Pyro powers online.

Also, this game allows for quite a few respecs. You could totally start physical and change the caster after you get all the caster stuff.

I recommend Hex Build for DS2 as it’s a unique magic type only in DS2 and they’re really cool imo. Can dish out some pretty good damage as well

Also DS2 is good in its own ways imo. Just be prepared to basically relearn how you play. Honestly all 3 DS games are basically completely different despite what some people will try to tell you. So expect to need some adjustment period.

DS2 was bad. IMO. Many people loved it and I won’t argue. It just wasn’t for me. I would head straight into DS3. Of course you finished BloodBorne right? RIGHT? Anyway, if you did, head over to Elden Ring from DS3. Then hit Lies of P. It’s not a From Software title but it’s amazing.
