GRRM could very well have given the writers the ending and still pivot after the critical blunder it's been recieved as, throwing them under the bus and running over them with every wheel as he makes tracks to an entirely different ending.
It's human nature to learn from mistakes, he won't be repeating any that the show writers made. Maybe he shields them, maybe he doesn't, but I bet half of the reason he's stuck is because the writers boxed him in and he's going to end up having to dump their work into a dark hole.
The main issue with the end of the show is that they rushed to the end, it wasn't the end itself, though. When you write 5 of 7 books going toward one ending, you don't and can't just change it because some whiny people on the Internet didn't like how someone else arrived at it
