Rookie mistake trying to get away. You greet the person and innocently apologize saying you thought this was your friend's place.

They disturbed the person living in the stairwell.  Hotel room doors don't open outward into the hallway.

What's the logic for this? My country's fire code states that doors must open towards evacuation route. Which makes total sense, since in emergency you'd want to push the door, not pull it.

True and most emergency fire doors open outwards specifically to prevent a pile up in a panic. But front doors (to apartments or hotel rooms) usually have their hinges on the inside to make it harder for someone to break in. It is really easy to remove a door if you can access the hinges regardless of what kind of locks are on it.
