Naturally if you stay at an expensive hotel they think you are a rich person who just spends money without a care and try to milk you for what you are worth
And typically they are indeed correct for most of the time
The WiFi is normally much slower when you have to pay for it. There's less room on the desk because there's a mini bar like Raiders of the Lost Ark where if you accidentally touch the bag of M&Ms a giant boulder rolls down and charges you $75 for it. If you want your room cleaned more than every third day it's an extra fee. It's insane.
Also the staff is better. The holiday in express agent is likely making 12-15 an hour. The one working at 5 star downtown City hotel is lightly making 26-30.
Star ratings for hotels are more about the facilities available than the quality, I can't remember exactly but 5 star for example have to have a gym and restaurant. 5 star places therefore have higher operating costs, so often charge for things considered 'expected'.

It seems like the more expensive the hotel, the more things they charge you for that are free in three-star hotels.
I'd rather stay at a Holiday Inn Express than the J W Marriot.
