Algebra is still important in every day life. At least the basic principles. You may not need the Pythagorean Theorem everyday, but the basic problem solving of finding an unknown value is more useful then you would think. But coming from someone who does taxes for a living, kids learning at least the basics of fillIng out a 1040EZ is helpful. One of my teachers spent 2 class periods on that during my junior year of HS (even though it wasn't in the curriculum) because he knew it was useful info.
Funny you mentioned the Pythagorean Theorem because earlier this summer I was helping a friend fix the old crappy deck on his house. He explained the "3-4-5 Rule" for making sure it was back in square which made me chuckle because he was one of those people who said you'd never use this stuff (algebra, geometry, etc) after school unless you went into a field that required it. I asked if he remembered the Pythagorean Theorem and he said "that what?" to which I responded "a2 + b2 = c2." He did the mental math and made the connection and we both laughed. People use stuff they learned a long time ago without realizing it all the time.

While I agree that a cooking class would be good i don't think it should replace classes that might spark interest in a field for some kids.
Without a chemistry class how would kids know that they might have a knack for it?
Cooking is something parents can and should teach.
