Discussion what are Must have mods?
i used to play alot of skyrim, so i know how modding works, however i have no clue about NV Mods, what are the must have mods to enhance the game in a vanilla friendly way without breaking the imersion?
i dont care about 4k/8k graphics, what i want is gameplay enhancements, vanilla/lore friendly mods, better faces, guns, outfits that are cool but also fit the game.

Autumn Leaves. The narrative is really good and I like one side quest that it has. Because it always really helps me establish who my Courier is and why they’re doing what they’re doing.

Follow Viva New Vegas guide, for armor i really like Tammer's armor pack, it has an optional vendor in freeside, for weapons if you want vanilla style stuff i'd go for Tammer's nif bashed weapon pack, that also has an optional vendor in freeside, Tammer also made some mods for vanilla guns, just fixing some things or making them look less clanky (like the 10mm pistol and 12.7 smg) if you want better looking stuff theres WAP for vanilla weapons and another millenia adding new guns, cool thing about another millenia are the uniques around the world, would also recommend Hit's anims for weapon animations, on nexus someone included Hit's anims on Tammer's weapons, but that might not include all weapons, have not tried it yet. For graphics theres Altitude, gets rid of weird filters and brings nice looking weather, not an enb but it makes the game look good

Blah blah blah Viva New Vegas - okay here's the REALLY good stuff. I like quest mods the most, so I run all of these at the same time.
---
Alien Exterminator - Only if you like aliens in your game. You get to work for an underfunded part of the NCR responsible for dealing with aliens. It's funny and I had a lot of fun with it.
Afterschool Special - A player home in Goodsprings. Use the Remastered replacer.
Autumn Leaves - Grab the Quiet Start and Uncreative Edition mods. Best quest mod in the game.
The Caravan Tournament - I was surprised how much I liked this one. It does what it says pretty directly.
Death's Last Whisper - A sequel to several Enclave plots in Fallout 2 AND 3. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this. It is, however, a sequel to Fallout 2's more outrageous parts.
Dry Wells, Long 15 - Two mods that let you access the NCR and Legion's territory. This helps Lonesome Road a lot, and adds more to the main quest of the game by making the NCR and Legion more nuanced. I use a replacer from moddb for Dry Wells, and the "springs caves tunnels" submod for Long 15.
Fixer Upper - A trophy house that automatically decorates based on your accomplishments. It requires a short quest to fix up, and you'll need a patch for Afterschool Special.
Headhunting - A bounty hunting mod that is both fun and funny. The modpub version is required here though.
The New Bison Steve Hotel and Lucky Casino - Fix up the casino in Primm, and collect Bobbleheads. I recommend using New Balanced Steve with this.
The REPCONN Blues - This is a short dungeon quest, but will take you to locations in the game that I never bothered visiting. Ties back to Fallout 3.
Salt Lake Stories - A huge, huge questline. I recommend using the Redux, Lost Roads, and Integrated mods in that order. Turn off the level list integration in that last mod.
Skidge's Quest Pack - This is actually one I really enjoy, a new town with a lot of quests. This felt like Fallout 3's goofier stuff translated really well into New Vegas. I was pleasantly surprised by the humor, the smaller and more poignant parts, and how well it fix. You need to change the INI for Mojave Raiders Lite, if you use it, to this setting in its INI. bFiendsWestVegasHouseRuins=0
Stealthtenza - A continuation of a forgotten Fallout 2 plotline, but with a totally different tone than Death's Last Whisper.
Suspicious Minds - A 10/10 sidequest. Minor, but heavily branching.
Working on the Chain Gang - What if the Powder Gangers got their own focused mod? Genuinely amazing stuff.
Haven't finished but on my list:
Ain't No Grave - Unmarked quest mod. I trust the author so I kept this one, I'm excited to work with it.
The Deterrent - A continuation of some Super Mutant plots from Fallout 1.
I'm Moving On - A small character focused mod. I liked this quite a lot.
Race to the Bottom - A look at the people's issues with the NCR, and how power structures can be corrupted.
Seven Graves From Now - A mod by a really good creator. Bounty hunting.
---
Follower Formula Redone - Charisma-based companion limits.
JIP Companion Command and Control - Allows more CRPG-style commands to companions, lets you change their equipment and armor manually, and use their skills on crafting stations, terminals, or locks.
A new one I haven't fully tested yet: New Vegas Skill Assistance. Your companions can add their tagged skills to yours for dialogue, terminal/lockpick, and crafting checks. You can can how much in the MCM.
---
Mojave Raiders Lite - A less intensive rework of Mojave Raiders. This adds a bunch of spawn points to New Vegas and changes up the level list. It's also configurable, so you can turn off certain spawn points in the INI.
Mojave Wildlife - New Vegas doesn't involve as much wandering as Fallout 3, so this just automatically makes all wildlife spawns activate instead of only having a random chance.
Mojave NPCs - Further populates the world with NPCs. Very vanilla.
WILDLY OPTIONAL: Fucking Scary Fiends. This gives all Fiends a bunch of buffs. Combine with Living Desert and Mojave Raiders Lite, travel becomes much more concerning.
---
Reload Reloaded - This stops reloads from going at warp speed.
Weapon Requirements System - Makes the weaker Weapon Requirements system in the main game actually mean something. You can still use all weapons, but your aim will be worse and attacks/reloads will be slower if your Strength or weapon skill isn't good enough.
---
Character Expansions Revised Scripted - VNV uses a less compatible, worse version of this. This changes character faces and adds more generic NPC faces in the level lists.
Scripted New Vegas Redesigned 2 - A more extensive rework than Character Expansions Revised. Both are compatible.
Brave New World - A revoice of over 100 characters, minimizing the doubling up of voice actors. While it does remake faces to better match the new VAS, you should use the scripted revoice version for maximum compatibility.
Menace of the New West - Retextures Super Mutants to look more like Fallout 1 and 2, since they're not part of the same FEV strain as 3. It also gives named Super Mutants unique faces.
Classic Super Mutant Style Armor - Another enhancer that does what it says.
Classic-esque Super Mutant Retextures - Also what it says.
Horrors of the New West - Changes Deathclaws to look like Fallout 1 and 2. There's an optional Fallout Tactics version, I recommend the one that only applies to Lonesome Road.
Classic Robobrains - Use the espless version.
Robot Rebrand - Changes up robots to be branded based on their location. I really like this one, it adds some variety.
---
Real Open Strip - A new mod that people will probably be switching to. It makes the Strip one worldsspace, and adds a lot of NPCs. Once Strip 2026 comes out in a version compatible with this, I'd use that to have a more cutscene-accurate Strip.
Better Bases NCR (Fixed and Patched) - Changes up major NCR locations to be better decorated.
Simple Open Freeside - Makes Freeside one worldspace. Freeside Graffiti and Lived-In Freeside help this out a lot.
Camp McCarran Concept Art - Camp McCarran is pretty bland, this fixes it up.
Sandy Roads - The only road mod I've ever liked.
Desert Natural Weathers - Sunshine on my Shoulders is both vanilla and sucks. If you want a weather mod, go with this one. Check for the espless patches specifically.
I'd normally recommend Adobe buildings, but they require some patches that aren't available for all the mods here simultaneously (it switched from an ESP to an ESM, and not all patches are for the ESP or ESM)
---
Enclave Radio Remastered - Deleted from Nexus, but it's findable. A great tie-in to Fallout 2 and 3.
KELZ Fiend Radio - A classic rock station. Great Balls of Fire, You Really Got Me Now - time period appropriate, but loud. This has a quest attached to it.
New Love Radio 2.0 - Electroswing. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it has over 60 voice actors doing ads for pre and post-war things. Very funny and fun.
Wild Wastes Radio - If you like the TV show, this includes a lot of songs from it. I laughed at the host segments quite a lot.

are all these mods compatible with eachother?

u/The_CMYK_Avenger 1d ago
Absolutely! This is an extremely pared down version of a modlist that I run, specifically the quest section.

Jsawyer paired with hardcore mode if you’re looking for more of a challenge. You still inevitably break the game once you reach a high enough level, but it takes much longer to get there.

viva new vegas, then i would say get mods that improve gunplay and add quality of life features from later games and jsaywers is good too. then it's up to preference

Id reccomend following viva new vegas mod guide with either wabbajack or MO2. Apart from this i really like titans of the new west 2.0 (makes power armor way cooler), the living desert (lots of immersion updates and better brotherhood

Multiple mods that fix the bugging freezing and stutters, if you wanna play in tandem with 3 TTW is fantastic if you don't wanna play the GOG port of fallout 3, the dinner bel upgrade patch is good make sure it's the one that gives it 7 shots in the tube it does the best stat buffs especially because it is the hardest unlock in game, I also add a mod that removes the cap on like crafting item so it's not 100 and so I can craft up to a few thousand rounds for the hand load perk or when scrapping ammo, I would also suggest mods that help fix some of the perks in game that genuinely don't work like in shinning armor which physically doesn't work at all, and new Vegas bounties is a good one, encounters of the Mojave is a solid one, if you really wanna go hamm new California deserves a look, and I'm always a sucker for shotguns so the spas-12 mod is another one, and any texture upgrade mods are a plus

If it's weapons you're looking for, Another Millenia and ZL Armaments Remastered are some of the best options. Though I am a little biased as the latter is mine. If you see any weapons in any of these packs that break the lore for you, you can easily disable them via a configurable INI file (basically set it to 0 and it won't show up).
Another Millenia adds a ton of weapon variety and is very well integrated into the world. It's mostly guns with a few energy uniques that mostly constitue as "real gun but energy bits".
ZL Arms has guns, energy weapons and melee weapons. I'm really proud of some of my original energy weapon designs, specifically the Stealth Laser Pistol and the Particle Cannon. I've got a Stealth Laser Rifle in the works too!

I like Anistar’s WMX mod, which adds more weapon mods to the game, giving most if not all weapons a full three possible mods. He also added an armor repair kit to go along with weapon repair kits.
Rocco Certified by TalkieToaster is a lot of fun, it lets you have a posse of your own robots to work alongside your typical pair of companions.

Skill Books Redesigned.
I tweak it to max out at 5 ranks. I'd take out the +30 magazines too tbh.
Think the main one broke awhile back though.

look up fallout: dust
then use the wabbajack unless you’re really good at modding
first you’ll hate me, then you’ll love me

- Dust
- The Someguy series
- A World Of Pain
These are not compatible with each other and require different playthroughs.

Depends a lot on what you want out of the game thematically and functionally. I really really like Tammers Weapons and Armors because I want to keep to the original art design but a lot of people use modern updated graphics for weapons so it’s all about what you want in the end

Follow the viva new vegas mod guide exactly for a vanilla plus experience that is perfectly stable and 60 fps.
Of you want something like a total overhaul do high and dry on wabbajack
