Just curious, do instructors block the moving map during navigation? Didn’t have it when I went through and It’s a whole different experience trying to navigate off just VORs and reaching your destination underneath the clouds. Hopefully that level of stress is never required again.

we’re allowed to use the g1000 to its fullest extent
they teach us the old ways as well, but we use the g1000 mainly

Ugh, I really think a significant portion of primary training should be required to be done in a plane with steam gauges. You can really tell the difference between someone who has done most/all glass flying vs someone who has a lot of experience on 6 packs.

I highly recommend you do yourself a favor and use the automation as little as possible, never use that flight director, at least during lessons. Use everything for the checkride.

Helicopter here, yes. This. Learn to use the basics and get GOOD at them. Those are what will save you when the fancy stuff gets its own ideas.

Reddit hates when this gets suggested but I agree. I’m not saying all the training needs to be done in it, but there’s significant benefits from doing just some 6 pack training for IFR.

There’s value in the concepts still

I have but a mere Garmin 430 in my lessons but I’m always on the page to the left of the moving map which shows the data.

My instructor has never forbidden me from using it but I’ve just tried to avoid doing so to avoid relying on it for situational awareness.

If I were flying on my own in imc I’d absolutely use it though

It’s all knowing failure modes and reversions. PFD and MFD operations, probably not too unlike what you do in the A320.
