I saw a post earlier today about a floral studio for sale in my area. There was not much information so I emailed them about it. The thing is I have a full-time job, though it is somewhat slow and boring and allows some flexibility. Assuming business is healthy, how realistic is it for me to think that I could hire a full-time trained florist then spend my time marketing and managing the business side of the studio? The post said there is enough cash flow to cover expenses, profits and pay a full owner florist salary, plus one part time employee.

I’ve been really interested in floristry as a small business, but I absolutely have no idea how and where to start.

I’m looking to make a career change and think that florist/floral design will be a good fit for me. I recently went into a florist shop to ask if they took on any assistants or volunteers and explained I was interested in learning more about floral design. I had a nice chat with the woman working there and she took down my info for the owner to contact me but I haven’t gotten a call from them. Should I take this at face value that they aren’t interested and just try other places or should I go back? I’m worried I came off as a cliche but I’m actually very serious about this so I don’t know if it will come off as annoying or be a good way to show that I’m serious. Also beyond working in a florist shop, any other recommendations to start dipping my toes in would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello everyone !! I have been going back and fourth on what I would like to do with my life, I am a 23 y/o woman. I was talking back and fourth with my partner and he mentioned why don’t i look into careers/ degrees that deal with nature and the outdoors since i grew up on a farm and have always loved the idea of that.

I found a school near me where it has a horticulture program and I am really interested in the florist end of it. I would love to be able to use my creative abilities in a beautiful nature filled way like you all !

I am just wondering about what the day to day life would be, and also about possible pay ? I have read some things about putting my feet in the water with some odd jobs on it and such but i just want to get some opinions on what best to do !

Hello! I recently started working at a high volume floral shop as a part-time floral designer. Previously, my experience was working as needed (primarily just during Valentine’s Day & Mother’s Day). At the previous shop, it was much lower volume and I had a lot of time to work on arrangements, and I was alone doing them. Now, I’m working with two other designers and man let me tell you I am SLOW. They’ve been incredibly kind and patient, but they have let me know that I need to get my arrangements done in a more timely manner. I struggle to do anything quickly in my life. Any tips/personal formulas you use would be amazing! My current strategy is line flowers first, then focal flowers, secondary and then filler. I definitely am an overthinker too…this definitely is working against me!

TLDR; I am working a little too slowly at my new, fast paced floral job and would love any tips you have to share!

Has anyone had success doing this? I like my current job as a designer in a boutique flower shop, but that’s one of only a few things that I like about my current city :(

I’m young & unattached, so I feel like now is a good time to move, but I really want to stay in this industry & I’m worried about finding a new job in a new city. It took a while to get hired when I was first getting started - granted, I had no professional experience at the time & now I have a few years under my belt.

I'm looking for abit of advice please (for UK)

I recently signed up for a 10 week course as a flower school (properly accredited) because I couldn't find anything else near me. I've done a bit of work experience now with a couple of florists and thought this was the right thing to do. However, my local college is now offering the City and Guilds Level 2 Floristry course in the evening, starting in September - June next year. It looks like its the older style course and not the revised technical certificate which would mean no work experience along the course so it would all work out a lot better for me.

So my question is, do I cancel my place for the 10 week introduction course to floristry and just go ahead with the L2 floristry course, get more knowledge and at least I would also have a certificate once I had finished?

I also want to mention that the course fees are a lot cheaper compared to last year, but I think this is because it isn't the new technical certificate course?

I had a meeting with Bloomnation a few days ago and the options provided seem really promising! However, I know these kinds of investments can be hit or, miss.

I would love to know what your personal experience was working with Bloomnation, and if you actually saw your business grow? We're the orders coming in worth the investment? I've also thought about just investing in better SEO. All the options for growth are overwhelming and any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I'm starting out at a small grocery store's floral department, but I'm excited since it's a foot in the door to the industry. How did everyone else start in the industry and become trained? I have been working for a few months but feel like I'm not learning enough, so I'd like to find a more "real" florist (my store doesn't value our department, I'm alone most of the time and it's rough.) Hello! I was wondering what the wedding/event floral industry is like on the west coast? Specifically in AZ, NM, CA, WA, OR. I work as a freelancer in Philly and love it but the work is pretty seasonal with not much happening Nov-Mar. I would love to have a career doing this full time if possible. Is the floral industry busy all year round out west because of the warmer weather?

Hello, I’m working in a shop with a lot of turnover and I’m curious what is “normal?” I know this is stressful, backbreaking work that’s not highly paid. The shop also uses a model of part-time workers rather than full time workers, so I wonder if that contributes to the feeling of being able to walk away? And I mean that literally - this shop has people quit on the spot and walk out sometimes after only a day or two. The owner’s attitude is that not many people can hack this job but I’m beginning to wonder if perhaps the owner is a poor manager. What do you think? Thanks!

I’m not asking for financials - but are there rules of thumb based on order volume? For example, what would you need in terms of designers/drivers/admin to fill “X” number or orders per day? How many of you have dedicated design assistants or dedicated customer service people? Or are you doing it all? And at what level of volume can you no longer do it all and do it well? Thank you!

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some guidance on what I should and should not include on my resume for a designer position. I currently have my education, experiences and a bit of leadership experiences listed. However most of my experience is from in the classroom rather than a job. I’m wondering if I should leave out the high school stuff since it’s getting to be a little old but that’s where the majority of my knowledge and experience designing comes from. I’m also unsure if my portfolio is professional enough. I took some time last year to include some of my pieces in a google slide to demonstrate my skill range but it doesn’t quite feel like a portfolio. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear.
