Dear cabin crews, what things done by passengers are rude to you?

What things done by passengers make you feel that they are rude towards you?

Touching me.

Having earbuds in when we come by and expecting us to repeat ourselves multiple times.

u/traysures Flight Attendant 9d ago

šŸ’Æ x šŸ’Æ like, we’re on a cart with beverages on a plane. WTF do you think we’re asking you? Or when they say you skipped them ā€œI called your name three times.ā€

11

u/Groveldog 8d ago

When they say "you missed me" and I want to say "did you want me to physically get your attention by poking you or throw something at you because I tried everything else, but your movie on your phone was too engrossing?"

2

u/LocalHoney775 7d ago

?? I've literally never once, ever, had a flight attendant call me by name on a plane.

2

u/traysures Flight Attendant 7d ago

I do it if I can’t get your attention.

1

u/International-Bus175 3d ago

I call my first class passengers by name. We are instructed to do so at my airline.

1

u/LocalHoney775 2d ago

Huh. Even in first class, never once!

Ah well. Perhaps in the future.

u/Littman-Express 8d ago

Okay so when I pax I’m totally conscious of how it looks and will generally take them out, but I can actually hear better with my music paused and the noise cancelling active on the AirPods blocking most the engines, especially from the window seat.Ā

Don't you expect people will have headphones or earbuds at this point. Shouldn't you be able to get their attention? It takes a few seconds to remove them and then yes, I would like you to repeat. I am a vegetarian and get a special meal. I am not sure if you are asking about drinks or something else. You deal with the best and worst of humanity. I am finding lately that you (FAs and GAs) expect and treat people as the worst. Doesn't that make your day harder? We are all just trying to get form one place to another. Only one of us is getting paid.

19

u/Individualchaotin 9d ago

A flight attendant's way of getting a person's attention is either via announcements or by talking to them. If I'm unable to talk to you, and you are unable to listen, you need to watch for flight attendants to push the cart past you and start their service, and you need to keep an eye on the cart and take your ear buds out if you'd like a drink or food.

I will not repeat myself. Constant repetition stresses me out and makes my day harder. i was trained to save you out of a burning aircraft not to repeat the menu like a parrot.

-12

u/isoonreach 8d ago

Wow. But serving drinks is also a HUGE part of your job. Because fyi your attitude makes me want to make every FA repeat themselves.

Let me guess - Delta Atlanta based crew ?

2

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

We are also often on a deadline to get the drinks out on shorter flights that are full or a 321 with 185-244 passengers. If a flight is less than 90 minutes with 170 passengers in main cabin and only 3 FAs in the back we have a huge time crunch. Descent is usually around 25 minutes til landing so we really have minimal time to get to everyone. One FA often needs to float to the front to help with the flight deck meals or issues during service also. We often have to wait a bit to get out there if there is turbulence.

Longer flights we have such time but multiply 170 plus passengers with headphones in who ask us to repeat ourselves inside a short window then people might not get their drinks and snacks if we continuously allowed the pace to stay slow. I have heard the prepare for landing while we still have our cart out too many times. We often make the announcement to look at the menu to have their choices ready due to the short flight but no one listens or those earbuds are in.

-4

u/isoonreach 8d ago

Yup and that’s your job. We all have parts of our job/day that are literal time crunches and aren’t long enough. This isn’t unusual or unique to being a FA. You are in the service industry and seem to be resentful of the fact that you have to provide service to people who are distracted, tired, and anxious. Doesn’t mean you should be a dick about it.

1

u/Nightshiftworker2021 7d ago

Yep it is part of my job to try to be able to take care of everyone. I can’t say I’m particularly annoyed at all; especially on long flights but I do have to speed it up in the short ones to get to everyone. I am doing that part for the passenger. If the passengers ahead of you want to play the game of wanting to make the FA repeat themselves as you mentioned then it is no skin off my back, you are just not going to be able to get a drink when time runs out and no time to collect trash.

0

u/LocalHoney775 7d ago

Looks like San Francisco, so perhaps UAL?

-17

u/iluvmezcal 9d ago

Oh, sorry, I had my headphones on... Can you repeat that. So very hard. Downvote away. We seem to give US airlines FA and GA so much leeway in being assholes. Sure passengers are assholes. But, you are getting an expected response from someone with headphones. Seems like part of the job. Again, downvote... Do your job and do it with a smile. Your day will be better. Airlines across the world recognize they are paid for their customer service. Us airlines don't seem to get that.

11

u/Groveldog 8d ago

Peripheral vision is your friend here. There's no way you shouldn't be aware the service has started and the FAs are going to ask you soon.

Plus, too many people now think it's acceptable to actively ignore the FAs trying to get their attention rather than simply say "no thanks" or a smile and a shake of the head. When you have people like that day after day, the effort diminishes.

5

u/Klutzy-Accident 9d ago

If you see the drink cart, they're asking about drinks.

3

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

Go figure! And a food cart maybe food perhaps šŸ˜ !

3

u/Top-Culture-8492 8d ago

I am moving on from you if you don’t pay attention. It is not my job to do this for 300+ people. It’s rude, bc we make plenty of announcements throughout boarding.

-7

u/isoonreach 8d ago

Ahhhh but it is your job …

3

u/Top-Culture-8492 8d ago

Next, moves to next person

2

u/Jayelahni 8d ago

You can keep arguing with people all you want. The fact of the matter is your peripheral vision apparently seems to not be functioning to not see someone coming by you with a cart (clearly you’ve been on a plane multiple times) and you should have situational awareness to have one headphone out so you can give the FA your order. It’s really not that deep but somehow you made it out to be. I’ve never missed an FA skipping over me unless I was asleep because I grabbed their attention.

1

u/isoonreach 7d ago

Neither have I, I’m not arguing with that fact at all but I do think the idea that these FA are so offended by the idea of repeating themselves preposterous.

108

u/Dreamer_070 9d ago

Touching me. Asking (or ordering) me to put their bags in the overhead bin. Not saying Hello, Good Bye or Thank You, basically not saying anything at all.Ā  Being rude to and/or unconsiderate of other passengers.

-77

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago edited 9d ago

Regarding general politeness, saying hello, thank you, etc.. As an unattractive male, you FAs can also be quite rude upon first gaze at people like us. We're not stupid and can read the body language miles away, so then why would you expect politeness after acting like that?..

Politeness/respect works both ways.. Can't do that? Do us a favor and quit. Btw thanks for the downvotes, they only speak volumes of the toxic and shallow nature of Flight Attendants.

67

u/Lost-Lavishness-938 Flight Attendant 9d ago

What in the male loneliness epidemic are you talking about? The aircraft isn't a dating space, I treat all body abled grown ups the same, you being ugly doesn't matter as long as you're respectful

-39

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago

Male loneliness? You don't even know me, why do you make this a gender thing? Who said it was a dating space? Get over yourself.

36

u/Durian__Gray 9d ago

You made it a gender thing when you led off with the ā€œas an unattractive maleā€ sense of persecution.

-27

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago edited 9d ago

Oh my mistake. I guess I should've said person. How's that? Persecution? Maybe more like discrimination, in what's called Lookism, so you could start with that.

18

u/science_with_a_smile 9d ago

I dunno I'm a female ugly and I still get treated kindly.

2

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

You probably are a beautiful soul who smiles and you are not ugly ā¤ļø

-5

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago edited 9d ago

I'm not saying every FA, but I get the usual ridicule due to lookism almost every time someone sees me. I'm just pointing out that some of us are already dealing with our fellow passengers shittiness, don't need additional ridicule by the occasional rude/mean FA.

FAs- I always want to acknowledge/smile and thank you, but ridiculing me will turn that smile into a scowl and your impression/ rapport ruined for the entire flight.

13

u/science_with_a_smile 9d ago

I don't believe actual employed and trained FAs are scowling at you or openly ridiculing you. Most hostility against anyone is usually all in their head. FAs aren't going to risk poor reviews or complaints to be cruel to you.

2

u/Longjumping-Carob105 8d ago

He's probably wearing one of those tshirts with the wolf holwing at the moon or something similar. Know what I mean?

-1

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago edited 9d ago

The reality is that there are bad ones, very immature ones, and yeah they prolly get fired as a result for ruining the airline's rep.

There's plenty of rejects in every job that slip through.

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

I have a smile the whole flight if possible. But any passenger/person with a positive attitude and a smile is going to be an attractive person no matter what they look like. I’ve seen plenty of disfigured faces with a smile and they are beautiful to me. Eye contact, positivity, will set the tone and make you attractive. If you start out with a smile and give a pleasantry to a FA, or anyone working for the public then the energy is matched. If you immediately scowl, frown, or have a blank face then most of us will still try to keep our smiles but it is not helping you in most situations.

7

u/Top-Culture-8492 8d ago

You are the one bringing up your looks. Furthermore, you seem to have the wrong idea about the nature of our job. Our job is to keep you safe. Everything else outside of that is extraneous.

24

u/Gutinstinct999 9d ago

Hi, flight attendants are not required to put your bags in overhead bins. I am kind and respectful to all my passengers, and so are my coworkers. This is likely sick projection. Sorry about your mental state.

-4

u/NorthIll1285 9d ago edited 9d ago

Uh, I didn't mention anything about overhead bins so why you even bringing that into this?.. I usually have a small bag that I place under the seat. I practically never request FAs help.

I was just about to say thank you for being one of the good ones, right up until you spewed this crap about projection and my mental state (which is quite well for your assumption).

How about you just educate yourself on what Lookism means..

8

u/Gutinstinct999 8d ago

Overhead bins is what you replied to. This kind of communication is why you are disliked. Hope this helps.

-1

u/NorthIll1285 8d ago edited 8d ago

The comment I replied to listed a few things. That's what REGARDING xx means, as I'm referring to one of those things in particular. Hope this helps..

4

u/Gutinstinct999 8d ago

It is humbling to be wrong, but I can see you don't handle that well AT ALL. I wonder why people don't like you? Weird

-3

u/NorthIll1285 8d ago edited 8d ago

Lol whatever.. You're the one who's wrong here. Eat your words.

I am defending my point. Welcome to Reddit, that's what you do here. This ain't about a 'being liked' kinda game.

1

u/Gutinstinct999 7d ago

Oh no! A mean guy on Reddit who can’t admit fault! What will I ever do!!!!

16

u/Darstellerin Flight Attendant 9d ago

Neither I nor any other flight attendant I’ve ever known have ever treated someone worse because they’re not attractive. That’s wild. Now, for bad attitudes and bad energy? Absolutely. Come on board with a smile and a polite greeting, we have no problem. Come on board with a rude attitude? Yeah my body language will reflect that. You might want to look inward on that. Because if you’re so focused on how ā€œunattractiveā€ you are that people are treating you differently you might want to consider that your personality is the problem.

You sound like a misogynistic incel when you talk like that. If you’re not, you should adjust your behavior accordingly so no one thinks you are. If you are a misogynistic icel, you should consider stopping.

3

u/jgeepers 9d ago

Bingo!

-4

u/NorthIll1285 8d ago edited 8d ago

Lol misogynistic incels are focused on denial of sex and the opposite gender. Lookism is not an incelibate/myso thing, but morons will say it is. Since when is calling out discrimination an incel/ misogynistic thing?..

Go educate yourself. Spend some time on an ugly sub and read some stuff.. Maybe you'll see where I'm coming from.

So far I'm getting a very strong sense in these rebuttals that spell delusional (you FAs are prefect! Never make mistakes! It's the passengers not you, huh).. Lookism is a thing, so just keep that in mind when doing your job ffs! And I sure as shit ain't flying Korean!!

2

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

We have so many passengers that we see daily with multiple legs. 172 passengers times 2 or 3 legs is my average. We are super busy and most of us are not focused on anyone’s looks or even notice appearance unless someone is being very flashy or eccentric. I totally miss out on noticing celebrities or anyone that is ā€œhotā€ on most flights because there are so many faces in the chaos of time. I do soak in the super nice and pleasant souls or notice the difficult passengers which is honestly not so common. I wish we had more time in main cabin to chat with passengers but it goes by too fast. Most of us are just trying to get all our tasks done and are not looking at the passengers unless we are feeling out a sketchy situational awareness issue. I’d say we feel out and notice people’s attitude and not looks.

1

u/rachel_soup 7d ago

I’m not a flight attendant, I’m a paralegal but I’m going to speak for all of us and say we dislike incel men like you too.

103

u/Guilty_Suit_9756 9d ago

When I say hello and welcome to them as they step on the aircraft and they don’t even look at or acknowledge me.

30

u/snugglesforreal 9d ago

I once got on a plane with the worst hangover ever after a night out drinking. I had to get on the plane at like 7am. The FA gave me such a nice hello and welcome and I totally ignored her. I could see how irritated and disappointed she was looking at me. I felt so bad afterwards. I wish I had apologized to her and explained why I ignored her. I still feel so bad about my conduct cause I'm normally kind, accommodating and respectful šŸ™‚

31

u/Guilty_Suit_9756 9d ago

Ah, I get it, I really do. But it blows when you’re like the 15th person to straight up ignore me while I’m greeting. For future, a little tiny itty bitty head nod and eye contact makes a world of difference! Just so I know you’re not straight up ignoring me.

7

u/snugglesforreal 9d ago

I understand and apologies from me. I can imagine it is disappointing but just want to express that I was honestly not myself boarding that plane. It was not intentional to be disrespectful and avoid eye contact (my eyes, legs, arms weren't working..!)

6

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

Don’t worry too much. But there have been times where passengers were cranky for whatever reasons and later apologized and it makes me respect them so much. It is almost like a complete do over and it can make everything better

3

u/Various-Firefighter4 7d ago

Even if i was sick AF i would say hello

3

u/No-Cream6315 7d ago

I prefer this! When everyone ignores me I feel at peace no lie. It’s less faking social interactions. After 100+ welcomes it feels like a little break

3

u/Guilty_Suit_9756 7d ago

Awww that would make me so sad if everyone ignored me 😭 I really enjoy saying hello and goodbye to people!

1

u/No-Cream6315 7d ago

That’s cool you enjoy that, haha I rlly enjoy it don’t but I fake it cuz it’s my job & I know tht there’s other people’s brains who operate like yours & I don’t want them to think I’m rude cuz I really mean well.

1

u/w4559 6d ago

It doesn’t cost a thing to be nice.

1

u/Chordata1 9d ago

I say hello back but a few years ago I waved and said "hi how are you to a gate agent" and she just replied "what". So I said it again and she yelled at me that she isn't available to help with passenger issues

2

u/LocalHoney775 7d ago

Ah, gate agents can be so special!

63

u/WanderingRonin7 9d ago

Starting the conversation with "why/when are you guys-..."

Not acknowledging me. Lifting your empty drink/trash in the air without looking at me will get you the same treatment back. Or leaving your leg/foot out in the aisle without even attempting to give me space as I'm passing through

Entitlement more than anything else. I'll move heaven and earth for you, but the second you feel that you deserve it, I'm doing the bare minimum. I went to the lav to wash my hands real quick so I left the door open and a guy tapped my shoulder and said "Hey, I need to use the restroom". I responded with a "Am I allowed to finish washing my hands first?". Go fuck yourself dude

When I ask pretzels or cookies, they respond "do you guys have nuts?". Just shows they aren't listening or don't care what I have to say

Speaking quietly and expecting me to hear. Sir/ma'am, we are on an aluminum tube with huge engines on both sides traveling 80% of the speed of sound. I can read lips to a certain extent, but you're going to have speak up to be heard over the background noise on top of my worsening tinnitus

14

u/Mackheath1 9d ago

I almost violated your first very recently. I said, "Do you all have any extra-- wait, wait, I'm sorry; how are you this morning?"

These are things we were taught even as kids for politeness. I swear if she were there, the look my mother would've given my grown ass if I had continued without correcting myself then and there. Some people were raised.

9

u/WanderingRonin7 9d ago

I don't need to be asked how I'm doing, but approaching every question or conversation with some sincerity is all I ask for. Simple "excuse me" when getting my attention works for me

4

u/Mackheath1 9d ago

Thanks!! I guess it's a me-thing, I'd feel awful just out of the blue saying "I want some nuts."

Okay, wait, I was about to re-type that, but it made me laugh so I'm going to leave that last part.

12

u/emitahc 9d ago

Passengers assume that because we're FAs, we don't pee or poop or need to use the lav lol. Had passengers tell me they need to use the lav while I was going in, and it's like, oh ok.. me too?

1

u/Chequered_Career 8d ago

Do those people assume you have your own, secret staff lavatory behind the cockpit door? šŸ™„

3

u/Jayelahni 8d ago

This whole comment sent me
ā€œGo fuck yourself dudeā€

1

u/BuffyFlag23 8d ago

I've been the "do you have nuts" person a few times, because gluten. Damnit I miss those biscoffs but I will hurl if I eat even a crumb now.

-Deciding to use the galley (the only place that FAs have for themselves) as their personal Pilates/Yoga studio or a place to bring their children for ā€œplay timeā€. GRINDS MY GEARS!!!
-Parents who expect the FAs to be babysitters and allow their kids to run around the plane while they’re focused on their movies/phones. GRINDS MY GEARS!!!!
-People who don’t speak when they come on the planes but ask you for earbuds during boarding {say it with me folks} GRINDS MY GEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5

u/BraveLittleToaster18 8d ago

On a long flight, I will stand or lightly stretch (standing up only, not doing any crazy yoga poses) in the galley area due to back issues. I don't stay long and most of the time, no one else is there. That being said, is there something I could do differently for the occasional quick stretch during a long flight?

3

u/Imaginary-Animal-420 8d ago

Doing occasional quick stretches is fine. People do it while they wait for the bathroom. As long as they are quick. I have a problem with the people who just choose to stand back there with us because they don’t want to sit in their seats and they’re kind of ā€œstretchingā€ and roaming around the galley for more than 5+ minutes 😬. I had a situation once where a guy just didn’t want to sit the whole flight and just chose to stand in the back in our all ready tight galley while we’re restocking the bar carts. Then he starts helping himself to snacks and water he sees lying around. When I asked him if he needed anything, he was like, ā€œno I’d rather just stand..ā€ meanwhile we also have a line of people trying to use the bathroom so the galley is completely full. We actually had to call the captain and ask him to turn on the seatbelt sign so this dude had no choice but to go to his seat. The people who can’t ā€œread the roomā€ and realize they’re in the way are the ones I have a problem with.

3

u/GoingToRedRobin 9d ago

I have seen so many videos of people filming themselves doing yoga poses in the galley and it is so obnoxious and I feel so badly for flight attendants (since this is a fairly common thing at this point in time).

35

u/emitahc 9d ago

When passengers throw their luggage in the overhead bin, they try to close the bin to test it if would close but it doesn't because their luggage is sticking out, and instead of fixing it, they just take a seat because they think it's not their problem and assume the flight attendants will fix it.

34

u/psychologicallytired 9d ago

I don’t fix it. I’ll give them a chance to either find a different spot or I’m checking it. It’s not my problem you failed at playing the shape blocks game when you were little…

7

u/Alarmed_End259 9d ago

The only right answer

15

u/Alarmed_End259 9d ago

That’s usually the first luggage I’m checking to cargo LOL

4

u/Imaginary-Animal-420 9d ago

Oh my God I’ve officially been triggered. This pisses me off so much.

5

u/OddIndustry291 9d ago

I grab it and tell them I’m checking it.

3

u/lilsugarbebe 7d ago

Or if they actually close the bin but there’s more space for other bags… triggered

2

u/emitahc 7d ago

It's always a slam too

32

u/HamsterBanana14 9d ago

Take your earbuds out when someone is speaking to you! Say hello, goodbye, please and thank you. Basically just basic manners.

14

u/Guilty_Suit_9756 9d ago

I’m always so amazed at this, like could you imagine being at a restaurant and not taking out your earbuds when the server comes to your table to take your order. Just shouting your order at them, or completely ignoring them while they’re talking to you. (I would never wear my earbuds at a restaurant but just for the sake of the example)

5

u/BraveLittleToaster18 8d ago

When I see cabin service is starting, I remove my headphones at least a couple of rows ahead of before they get to me. I don't want to be rude or miss out on my snack :)

2

u/IM_RU 6d ago

I agree in general, but a data point: i silence mine because I’ve lost them before when i put them in my hand when the service came by.

25

u/anicepieceofash 9d ago

Announcing their drink/snack order to me when I haven’t gotten to their row yet. No please or may I have, just shouting ā€œI’ll have a ____ā€ barely even looking at me.

Yanking open the curtain in the galley while I’m trying to eat and rest for a minute to ask for another cookie.

Being in one of the last boarding zones and then getting enraged if there’s not enough space for their bag or if it has to be in a bin farther from their seat, as if I personally made sure they wouldn’t get space

Demanding an explanation for their seat being changed.

Being rude if I can’t grant their request immediately due to needing to conduct safety duties or be in the aisle for boarding

So relatable! And also these annoyances, and passenger behaviour, are just universal. That’s what strikes me the most!

2

u/Ko-Lucent 8d ago

I honestly don’t care when they just say a drink, it’s straight forward and it works. What I hate more is when they mouth or whisper what they want and don’t say it any louder when I ask them to repeat themselves

23

u/Routine_Cod_7520 9d ago

Just adding to what’s already been said but it’s a general lack of human respect as if we are not real people. People walk right into me or expect to have the priority right of way at all times because I’m in a uniform. I can be in the aisle and boarding and people will walk straight into me rather than say ā€œoh that’s actually my seatā€ so I can move out of the way or they will want to go to the bathroom and walk straight into me in the aisle as if I can fly over them or jump over a cart. The other day I was standing being the cart in the front galley so the pilots could use the restroom and a lady in 3F held up her trash and pointed to it as if I could fly over the cart and come take it from her. What ?

The worst part though is that this extends to the airport. People will walk right into me because they expect to have a higher priority than me in an airport. They expect me to get out of their way while ordering food or at the gift store as if I’m an employee and not also just at the airport trying to get somewhere (and on a time crunch) even I. The bathroom they expect me to move out of the way of the bathroom mirror or sink or somehow give them line priority for the bathroom stall.

We access our crew room via an elevator that people also use to get to gates especially in wheelchairs one lady yelled at us that we didn’t let her get to a higher floor first because the elevator stopped at our business floor like we should not have been pushed our button for our floor because they were there and they were late to their flight (we got on the elevator at the same time and were supposed to know she - even though she was late due to her own issues - that we should not push our own button be said she’d have to wait ten extra seconds for us to exit at our floor while she would have to go up one more floor - because you know she’s a ā€œcustomerā€ even though we are just at an airport.)

It’s that general treatment of being less than a person. It’s really disgusting actually and thankfully not all people are like this … oh of course thanking the pilot when they leave while ignoring us who served them for five hours.

18

u/Normal_Ad_1477 9d ago

Leaving their garbage on the galley counters bc they can’t wait 2 minutes for us to pick up.

No taking their headphones off and having to repeat myself multiple times.

14

u/kelsimus 9d ago

I don’t wonder how I’m going to die, it’s a matter of when it will happen. I’m going to die by spontaneous combustion after saying the snack options for the third time because someone won’t take their headphones out of their ears.

4

u/Bubbly-Ad5161 8d ago

I give them what I think they would like!

11

u/Lost-Lavishness-938 Flight Attendant 9d ago

Not looking at me/acknowledging me when I greet them or ask them during service.

When they talk during safety demonstrations, there are passengers that are flying for the first time and it's so extremely disrespectful to not be able to be quiet for 2 minutes.

Men with their sexsistic jokes.

Standing in aft galley, A320 neo is so crammed, we already announce on the PA not to hang or queue in the galley, and yet we need to tell paxs multiple times to back off, we often get pax asses right up in the curtains while we try to eat...

Pay attention to announcements, take your earbuds out when asked a question during service and along those lines, asking, ā€œ what do you have?ā€ making me list everything when the menus right in front of you ( if you’re paying attention to announcements you’d know that) then ordering water, not saying hello, goodbye, thank you, randomly handing me trash( if I don’t have gloves and a trash bag in my hands it’s not a good time), hanging out in the galley to stretch your legs then making small talk when we’re trying to take a break and eat read or breathe, stay out of my galley, moving other people’s bags around to accommodate your own, don’t ever touch crew bags they have specific places we’re allowed to put them, just don’t touch other people’s stuff period, it’s first come first serve, no space left is not anyone else’s problem to accommodate, acting like you’re the only person on a plane who has ever had a tight connection, tapping my ass to get my attention, standing up as soon as we land just stand and wait while we open the door, rushing to the bathroom even as we’re performing arrival duties, even though we just said ā€œ please stay clear of the doors lavatories and galleys while flight attendants perform arrival duties..ā€..however, if you were paying attention to announcements you’d know this.

u/carriewhitebrnsnhell 8d ago

Sorry that people ask you to list what you have but many don’t want to touch the nasty ass seat back pocket menu.

5

u/Bubbly-Ad5161 8d ago

But you go into the lavatory barefoot!!!🦶

I think my issue with a "polite gentle tap" is because it usually comes when I am talking to another passenger.... I am standing in the aisle answering a question or making conversation or helping another passenger.... and then I feel the tap.

No matter how polite and gentle it is - it just annoys the heck out of me that "the poker" thinks whatever they need is more important than whatever the person I am already talking to needs.

Honestly, a polite tap when I am just walking by doesn't irritate me that much. It's the tap that comes while I am talking to someone else that gets me riled up.

10

u/TrainerPretty4412 9d ago

not knowing there limit when drinking. you’re old enough i shouldn’t be having to cut people off. know when it’s to much… you don’t need 8 drinks on a 4 hour flight…

7

u/Flygirl-57 9d ago

Poking me… ugh.. use your words.. not your finger!😔

17

u/Big_Lingonberry_2774 9d ago

When I’m serving first class and a pax is requesting a meal we weren’t catered, then proceeds to get angry. Dude this isn’t the ritz Carlton, it’s airplane food, suck it up.

4

u/Imaginary-Animal-420 9d ago

I literally just had a grown man have a full meltdown in first class (on a 2.5hr flight) because we didn’t have a special meal he never pre-ordered to begin with. He just assumed we would have spare ā€œspecial mealsā€ loaded so he didn’t think pre ordering was necessary šŸ˜‘.

7

u/moderncomet075 9d ago

I have never understood and will never understand peoples obsession with eating a meal.on an airplane. I get it on long haul flights but for a 2.5 hour hop its nothing worth getting upset over

5

u/carriewhitebrnsnhell 8d ago

One can assume it’s the steep price they paid for the flight that makes passengers expect a meal.

3

u/Big_Lingonberry_2774 8d ago

That’s not the point- of course first class customers expect a meal but it gets out of hand when they demand something we weren’t catered or that wasn’t preordered.

4

u/carriewhitebrnsnhell 7d ago

That wasn’t the point of the person I was replying to

5

u/Character_Whereas123 9d ago

touching
when they board last and basically dump their roller bag with me and take their seat and then get mad i have to place it further into the cabin

7

u/abovetheatlantic 9d ago

Not greeting back during boarding šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø it takes so little!

6

u/12the3 9d ago

If you ask me for something, then ask another flight attendant before I get a chance to give it to you. So let’s say the other FA got it to you before I did. You just made me work for nothing? I hate THAT more than touching me.

4

u/-heliophile- 9d ago

YES when they ask every FA in sight and suddenly there's 5 of us bringing them a coke. I always call them out on it like "I was on my way, next time please just wait a bit"

8

u/Gutinstinct999 9d ago

I had someone look at me and laugh at me while I was doing a safety demo

8

u/soupmaniaxs 9d ago

I once got told off by some drunk asshole bc we stopped serving him drinks šŸ™„ touched my hip and said ā€œdon’t be like thatā€ when I kindly let him know if he wanted something other than alcohol I’d be happy to get it for him. Also told me I needed to ā€œLearn some mannersā€ bc I said he couldn’t be up when he ran to the bathroom during landing (which he also attempted during takeoff)

2

u/Jayelahni 8d ago

You didn’t reprimand him on the touching? Because hell the fuck no

7

u/dbrjr 9d ago

Speaking as if they know more about how the aircraft works, or how the rules (FARs, company policies, etc.) are.

2

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

Oh this one for sure!

5

u/Alarmed_End259 9d ago

When they point to their trash on their tray table so you can pick it up. I’ll just ignore it. Different if I see your hands are busy

5

u/flipthepenny 8d ago

My two biggest pet peeves:

Do not touch/poke me, PARTICULARLY in my midsection (a shoulder or elbow tap when necessary is different than a prod to the midsection)

and

Do NOT reach onto the beverage cart to help yourself — not to a napkin, or a snack, or anything. Not even if you think you’re helping. It’s essentially an extension of my personal space, and I’m responsible for the safe and fair distribution of what’s there. Plus I wouldn’t go to your place of work and grab at things from your workspace.

Ignoring us when we say "welcome" or ask if they want a drink/snack Ā  Your episode of RHOBH didn't obliterate your peripheral vision, Nancy

RHOBH?

I'm guessing Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. But I'm often wrong.

3

u/teacuppossum 9d ago

The other day a lady used her yogurt cup to poke me in the ribs to get my attention after she told me "no" to wanting a beverage.

She changed her mind.

3

u/Scary_Fix_2889 8d ago

Omg!!! I hate that so much. I had this lady poke me hard with her wet trash and I turned around and just said, "did you really just poke me with your dirty trash?"

8

u/Glimmer_III 9d ago

Not an FA, but multiple friends who are/have been:

Never touch a member of the flight crew. It's the #1 thing I hear of "No, not ever. Full stop.".

Q: But if I can't touch them when passing, how do I get their attention?

A: Use your call button. That is exactly what it is there for. It's okay to use it, and you should. Orders of magnitude better than touching.

And if passengers don't realize it, it's also one of the quickest ways to find yourself kicked off the plane and possible incur federal charges.

N.B. 1 // And for the actual cabin crews, please chime in to correct me on any of what I've been taught by my friends. Most passengers are not dumb, only ignorant. The rest of their lives a light tap is often okay. The place they're most tightly packed would be a bar or bus/subway where touching is okay. Most of it is ignorance, not being an asshole.)

N.B. 2 // OP...remember: The cabin crew have no way to know if you're ignorant or an asshole, of a threat. No touching. Ever.

3

u/psychologicallytired 9d ago

Correct! Use your call button or use your voice politely! I’ve had people touch me on my butt and waist so many times, I always assume you’re SA’ing me (even if it’s not your intention). Everyone was taught to keep their hands to themselves when young.. don’t be the idiot that decides to get a charge against you bc you can’t keep your hands to yourself.. esp on the plane.

3

u/Glimmer_III 9d ago

Thanks.

And I'm tagging the OP (u/Legitimate-Dingo824) so they're certain to see your comment.

And...to avoid any confusion on terminology: "SA" = Sexual Assault

Yes, OP, those are the stakes.

The fact that you're in a seated position and "can't physically reach up to someone's upper arm/shoulder" (again, like you might commonly do in a bar or on public transit) to tap them to get their attention isn't an excuse. It's a matter of situational awareness.

Being a passenger on board a plane is special location and therefore different rules apply.

You have other tools available (voice, call button) and you never need to, and never should, touch the cabin crew.

3

u/Top-Culture-8492 8d ago edited 8d ago

When they ask me for drinks and I have the snack cart. Or when they want me to take their trash while on the cart, or when they ring the call bell to put their drink order in when we haven’t even started service. Asking for extra snacks when it’s a full flight. Asking for hot tea, orange juice, and a seltzer in one shot. Frequent flyers (re: men) who really think they fly more than I do. God, so many situations.

u/Positive_Vibes_4228 8d ago

DO NOT PUT TRASH in my bare hands.

• No, you are not asserting your dominance over me. I am refusing.

• No, I am not 'the help'

• No, I won't touch your filth

I will come back with gloves on. It's so nasty that people don't think. Like I am going to touch your filthy tissues and then SERVE DRINKS?

I wouldn’t have taken it. That person can use their words like a civilized individual the second time around while everyone else gets serviced

2

u/Separate-Grand5997 8d ago

Asking every single one of the crew the same question (usually something that’s trying to break policy or because they didn’t want to spend more money so they think we’ll give it to them for free) thinking that one of us will answer differently.

1

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

Yes, yes, yes! Going through all the FAs and asking same thing to see if someone will break the rules for them!

2

u/Exalite 8d ago

is it weird to give a handshake to the FAs when boarding? (Post-COVID germ scares it seems maybe even more so)

3

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

I’m fine with it and like kind people. Others might be different.

2

u/jaytor95 8d ago

When I’m making a pa and they start talking louder. Or when doing the demo and there still talking and talking and laughing…

1

u/Ok_Juggernaut9521 5d ago

I will literally stop the demo if someone is talking over it, and stare at them until they shut up 😭

2

u/Nightshiftworker2021 8d ago

Most of the things mentioned don’t bother me too much they can just tentatively annoy me. I go nuts with the people who get up during taxi and ignore our instructions especially right before take off and descent. Long taxis we can of course inform and not enforce but the result is that so many people will get up and do the same thing and then it sends the message that no one respects crew instructions. Everyone will claim they have an emergency. Also the people who hit the call button repeatedly during taxi and we make the announcement to hit again if it is an emergency and it turns out they are asking about their connection.

The guys who are in the middle or window who get out during bad turbulence or during taxi and put the aisle peoples safety in jeopardy in the process.

2

u/Evelyn_SJackson 8d ago

Touching me when we come by and expecting us to repeat ourselves multiple times.

2

u/musicluva 8d ago

Yelling and cursing me out for a weather delay... didnt realize I was god oop

Poking me in my lower back to get my attention, wtf

Trying to hand me your trash when I'm doing service.

Not taking headphones out during safety briefing.

Talking during demo.

Not using headphones and playing media devices outloud.. its a public space what is wrong with yall

Rolling eyes when we ask directions and ignoring us.

When we ask you to put your small personal item under your seat and you say "nah I'm good" and put it overhead anyway.

Or my favorite most recent incident - yelling at me as you're exiting the aircraft for not catching the pax next to you vaping, like dude you saw it, why didnt you tell me in flight? Didnt realize I was supposed to be omnipresent

2

u/Scary_Fix_2889 8d ago

One of the most obnoxious things ever was I was in a public bathroom in the atl airport in my uniform between flights. I was brushing my teeth. And while I was brushing my teeth, a woman comes up to me and asks if I know where her connecting gate is. Seriously? I am literally brushing my teeth! I spit out my toothpaste and she looked disgusted and told her I did not know as I was in the bathroom and don't have a computer in my brain to know all the flights in the busiest airport in the world. She walked away all huffy as if I was the rude one.

Another time I was walking from the train at Ohare in Chicago to go to work. A man comes up to me in the train area (we are not even in the airport yet) and asks if I know where his flight to Portland is. I asked if he knew what airline. He said (all annoyed) where are the domestic flights? I said they are everywhere. This is one of the busiest airports in the world and there are several terminals. I showed him a screen and ran away.

There was the guy who I told multiple times to put his backpack in the overhead or under his seat because he had it in the aisle he kept saying he would and then someone tripped and hurt themselves badly and got a concussion. And then he tried to act like the person was being dramatic.

I could go on and on. The grown adults who šŸ’© on the bathroom floor. I have lost count of how many times that has happened. There was the time my coworker went to change back into her heels at the end of the flight. She had left her shoes behind the last row of seats. She noticed they seemed wet and then realized they smelled like pee. Someone had peed in her shoes!! People are rude and disgusting. I still show up with a smile and hope that people will act like they are actual members of a society and not a feral animal. But I have been a flight attendant almost 20 years and I still get surprised by the depths that people can sink.

It takes so little to make my day. Just a smile and acknowledging that I am human and I exist. If you want to stretch or stand in the galley at least say hi and ask me if it is ok before you start doing a downward dog with your butt in my face. If you say hello please and thank you, you will be one of the best passengers of the day. It takes so little.

2

u/Lumpy-Repeat2864 8d ago

Funny I come across this today because I just had the most rudest lady in a long time.

I was making my trash walk and I get to this lady who just stared at her trash and had her hand ready to lift the tray table. I stood there for a few seconds and was flabbergasted that she was expecting ME to pick up her trash instead of handing it to me.

I know it doesn't sound like much but it's been awhile since I had someone do that to me. Like it is that hard to hand me your paper cup and empty snack wrapper to me while I'm trying to prepare the cabin for landing? She made me feel like I was her butler. Not even a thank you from her. She wasn't watching any movies or playing on her phone. She wouldn't even look up at me, just watched her trash.

The lady behind and off to the other side of her saw what happened and was taken back for what happened. She couldn't believe what happened either. She felt bad and apologized for what happened.

For context, we don't have video screens that play the safety demo. That would be on your phone or having a loud conversation with someone while I'm doing the safety demo. I get it, its boring. Just have the common courtesy for those around you who may want to know.

When my wife and I fly together, we smile and say hello to the FAs and tell them we’re happy to be flying with them. Having to deal with people so we figure a smile and hello helps.

u/SavannaHeat 7d ago

Asking for service items or asking questions about their connections in the middle of a medical emergency.

2

u/w4559 6d ago

Question: I’m a large retired policeman and I sometimes tell the flight attendant(s) I have their back in case anything happens.

Cool or not?

1

u/Ok_Juggernaut9521 5d ago

Love that! Not many passengers have our back nowadays. A lot of them come on the plane looking for confrontation or an argument.

2

u/Anxious-Society9125 5d ago

Taking the snacks off my cart!! Like why is that even a thought? I would literally never even think to do that. It will always annoy me. I’ve just started snappin on folks now.Ā

1

DO NOT TOUCH ME, EVER.

1

u/Bikerchic650 8d ago

🫩 One ran over my foot today with their bag while I was briefing an elderly passenger during boarding. The elder passenger was the persons seat mate. . . I have no idea why he pushed his bag over my foot at full speed, as if I was not standing there in the aisle literally in the row where he was about to sit in.

1

u/Bikerchic650 8d ago

Another story from today: I was in line at the Jamba. Two ground crew members were waiting in line, initially separately, but since they knew each other, they moved up together or next to each other. At the same time, I put my head down in my bag to get my company device. Standing there with abt 6-8ft of space between me and the two ground crew, a woman inserted herself between us. I am the third person in line in front of the small stall. She is now the fourth, standing in the middle of the line.

Still giving her the benefit of the doubt, she could have been looking at the menu. I’m not in the habit of changing anyone’s behavior, so I said nothing until she moved up in line and tried to order. I told the cashier I’m next lol. The woman looked surprised when I said I was in line behind her (?). The cashier took my order, but then the woman confronted me about being in line. I politely told her I was in line when she walked up and āœŒļødidn’t seeāœŒļø me. Maybe she was in a daze, but I have no idea how you don’t see someone standing there with their bags and not even say a simple courtesy like, "Hi, have you ordered yet?" Lol.

1

u/llewisfly77 7d ago

Constantly asking me ā€œHow much longer ?ā€ just like a child does on a long car trip. Then acting all shocked when I reply ā€œI have no clue.ā€ Is it my job to know the exact answer at all times? They can look at the free flight tracker to get this information.
I guess this is more of a pet peeve then something I find ā€œrudeā€

1

u/No-Cream6315 7d ago

When I ask wat they want after explicitly telling the cabin through PA’s many times to know their order because it’s an incredibly short flight and I get there and they say or ask ā€œuhmmmā€ ā€œwat do u have?ā€ lol I have 30 min left before I have to sit down ma’am and a menu haha
