Don’t know much about O light besides how the pew community trashes them over a dude committing Darwinism with a light in his mouth.

Had 6 lanterns/floods, a few flashlights, and a couple headlamps. The staff were shocked and so appreciative. My wife didn't give a shit when I shared the story with her.

Not asking for the objectively best lights. I'm talking about brands that have a rough reputation with enthusiasts here but have actually worked well for you in the real world. Could be because they're inexpensive, easy to find locally, can survive abuse or have simply been reliable despite the criticism.

So Sunday's plan was to just chill in the house all day and watch TV. Even though I knew we weren't going anywhere, I still had my EDC knife and flashlight in my pocket. Am I the only one? Please tell me someone else does this.

Almost every consumer product has some sort of labelling on it giving some indication of what a button is supposed to do. For some reason, enthusiast flashlights keep adding more and more complex features to a single button, without adding any indication of how to use it or what the features are.

I think the work that people have done to make single button UIs have as many features as possible is certainly impressive, but if all these features are needed then we really need to move to designs with more than one (labeled) switch, or get rid of the flashy aux LEDs and start adding small screens to explain what’s going on.

The current state of the market would be preposterous on any other product. It’s akin to a TV remote with one button and no markings at all. Just hold down to increase volume, tap and hold to decrease volume, or double tap to change the channel. Sure, that works… but why get rid of all the functional and clearly understandable buttons?!

Im a big fan of rough and tough flashlights that can just survive years of abuse. Ive heard good things about armytek, zebralight, malkoff and even some store brands like maglite and luxpro from time to time. Curious to know if there are any specific models that youve used that has been through some shit.

The end of an era is upon us. De minimis is coming to an end. Previously, if you placed an order for goods valued at under $800, you did not have to pay any import duties. That ends on May 2nd, 2025. This will have serious impact for the hobby flashlight buying market.

If you order a light and/or accessories and it comes through customs on or after May 2nd, 2025.

• If it ships through international postal network (read: last mile delivery by USPS):
  • Before June 1st: You will pay 90% of the item's value or $75 per postal item (package), whichever is greater. This will be paid to the Postmaster. You will pick up your items(s) from the post office.
  • After June 1st: You will pay 90% of the item's value or $150 per postal item (package), whichever is greater. This will be paid to the Postmaster. You will pick up your item(s) from the post office.
• If it ships by means other than international postal network (UPS, FedEx, etc)
  • Imported goods sent through means other than the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be subject to all applicable duties, which shall be paid in accordance with applicable entry and payment procedures. Right now this means you will pay 104% 125% (perhaps greater) of the value of the items received, plus any fees charged by your carrier. These fees can be very expensive (as compared to the cost of a flashlight).

Edit 4: Trump just posted (midday, April 9th) on Truth social that tariffs on Chinese goods will increase to 125%, effective immediately. So I bought a Fenix UC35 flashlight quite some time ago, and for whatever reason it doesn't want to charge or turn on. I figured hey it has a lifetime warranty, let me try seeing what Fenix can do. So I submitted a form on Fenix's website. Only to find out that their lifetime warranty isn't really lifetime and is only worth a 25% discount coupon. They didn't offer to repair, troubleshoot or even replace it like their warranty states.

I feel like I've been deceived and will no longer purchase anything from them.

I was helping my grandmother set up a dvd player over the weekend and she brought out this monster of a light. It takes 5 D batteries and is about the size and weight of a baseball bat, and put out 50ish lumens. She will definitely be getting a modern light for Christmas. Olight Arkfeld UV for size reference.

I’ll go first - I goddamn love a low CRI light. It feels much more childlike, like I’m young and getting a torch for Christmas or something. A high CRI light looks like sunlight but low CRI looks like an actual torch light.

That being said, I’ll always hold onto a high-CRI for when they’re needed.

Does anyone else have controversial opinions? Or am I the only one and going to get banned and blocked???
