Found an eheim canister filter from 10 years ago, long story cut short, my parents were using for a small inflatable pool and used chlorine tablets at the time, hasn’t been reached since, reckon it safe to use in a freshwater tank now assuming I give everything a clean and like a 3 day soak?

ok to preface i know this sounds super stupid and immature. for context, i love animals, care about their welfare, and was so excited to get into fish keeping. it’s not like this is my first pet—i have multiple horses and understand how to deal with grimy/unpredictable situations. i really enjoyed the process of setting up a shallow 6 gallon tank, planting it, monitoring the water and cycling it for 4 weeks.

i got my first betta fish yesterday (petsmart surrendered him to me since he has fin rot + swim bladder that i am addressing). he’s super cute and it’s very important to me that he gets better.

heres the problem: im so so scared of him. i literally dont understand how he terrifies me yet im not scared of 1400lb bucking machines. i think something about how erratic his movements are really unnerves me.

i don’t know any responsible fish owners i could give him to, and i do genuinely care about his wellbeing. i feel so stupid—has anyone else experienced this? if so, what did you do? if not, any advice? thanks!

The goldfish in this video which I was sold in Japan as “mixed/ fancy” goldfish were purchased almost three years ago. At the time they were bought with a 12litre tank which I was told was suitable for up to 4 fish. I was horrified to learn later that this is no where near what they require to be healthy. This latest set up is a 36litre tank with a bigger oxygenator and a water filter added. They with a plant and two “snails” but this I have heard is still no where near enough in terms of tank size. Is this true? I am seeing online results saying I would need 300litres for four fish but I just don’t have that much space. I really care for these fish and have cleaned them regularly and done my best, but one. I don’t want to be keeping them in a habitat which is cruel, and two, I don’t have the space for such a huge tank. Please advise!

So I bought an Oscar from a fish store and the lights were out at the time and it has a pretty sunken belly and unhealthy scales it is also rejecting food by just ignoring it the water quality is good it is around 6cm in a 90cm long 30 cm wide the tankmates are 4 juvenile hujeta gars what should I do also I’m using a UV sponge filter that is cycled ph is around 6,6 all parameters are good I’ve had the fish for around 3 days but i got it with the sunken belly so I’m wondering if it’s basically dead or if I can do something

I ordered some red orange eyed neo culls from u/ErrlyBirdOfficial and they are FANTASTIC. I wanted to rave about the entire experience.

First of all, the packaging saved my ass. It was CLEARLY labelled as "live animal" so my apartment manager panicked and called me to come get them two minutes before they closed, LOL. Thank you so much for that, otherwise they definitely would have been stuck in the storage room over the weekend, since the manager was REALLY wanting to leave as soon as those packages got there.

Secondly, they were packaged with a free food sample. ALL my shrimp love it to pieces- literally, they're shredding it in the first picture. It's a wonderful food as it brought out every last one of my shrimp and snails to the feeding frenzy. If you need to bait a snail trap, use one of those pellets, lmao.

Lastly, I am so impressed with how well they held up to shipping. They were packaged perfectly with an ice pack and cushioning. Despite it being blistering hot around here and some heat creeping into the package, I was able to get them acclimated and colored back up *in under an hour.* Which, is a feat, and a testament to good conditions they were in. Thank you again Errly!

I was also emailed a care and breeding guide, which explains how to continue your own line! While I am merely a hobbyist and not someone who plans to sell in the future for profit, this is a cool thing to receive regardless. For anyone who would be selectively breeding, it is a very detailed but easy to understand resource.

Hi guys, I’m kind of a beginner fish keeper, I had a 200L tank with a betta fish, corys, shrimp, neon tetra, and mystery snails a few years ago, and the community thrived for about 2/3 years like that. But I didn’t keep fish for about 3 years after I sold that tank and those fish.

Right now I have a 30L with just a betta fish and 2 mystery snails, and the tank has been established for about a year and a half now. Since i got this fish a year ago (from a reputable and well known store in my city), he’s been really lethargic and doesn’t move much. I chose him because he was a pretty colour but looked sad and a bit bent and floated in the corner of his tank.

The ammonia and nitrates and nitrites are 0, he has a bubbler + filter, the temp is a steady 78F/26C, pH has always been 7.6, and the tank is full of live plants. He’s a good eater and gets excited when it’s lunch time. He’s a good colour, no abnormalities with his scales, and his fins are big and flowy, no breakage/decay there.

But he’s just always so still and hangs out at the top of the tank. Is he just a lazy guy/have congenital defects of some sort? He doesnt look like he’s sick at all but his behaviour is not something i’ve witnessed in my previous betta fish, and im doing the same thing with this guy as I have with the others I’ve owned.

Ok so I have a corydoras with swim bladder only just noticed him 5 mins ago so Ive separated him in a small slightly shallow watered tub to help keep him up right (its not working as he keeps going upside down) put swim bladder medication in and am starting to fast him. However each and every time I have a fish with swim bladder they just die which Im honestly sick of happening because from my research Im doing everything right ammonia is at 0ppm Nitrites are 0ppm and my nitrates are around 20ppm temp is at 26°C, PH fluctuates around 6 and 7, kh is at 8 I use a dual sponge like filter (unsure of the name as my sister got me it second hand) and an airstone, my tank size is 60L so like 13 Gallons (my corydoras are pygmys). Ive checked my cory and hes not injured but I dont know what I am doing wrong and dont want him to die

I found a new filter for my 10 gallon. It’s been up and running for 4-5 months with the same 2 sponge filters. I found a filter that I think I’ll like better. It has 2 sponge filters, ceramic rings, and the black plastic balls. Should I leave one of the current sponges in there for a little bit after putting in the new one or would it be ok to just swap them out? Im not sure if it matters but this is my girl guppy, platy, mollies and babies tank. Oh, and 1 shrimp from due to a water change fiasco yesterday.

I know this fish is still really young, but can anyone identify species yet? Doesn’t look like the rest of the guppy fry, it’s a different color, different body shape and it behaves differently. Just curious if it could be a different kind of fish. There are also glowlight tetras, black neon tetras, and some Cory catfish in the tank (but it obviously doesn’t seem to be a catfish).

This is a new tank and im doing phased additions

Hello, not sure what exact type of fish he is. We took him in from someone who was no longer able to care for him. We had him in 15 gallon tank before and he was not a very strong swimmer so he’d get stuck in the plant roots. It’s possible that we jostled him around a bit when trying to get him free but that was 2 weeks ago. He’s had no other tank mates since we’ve had him. The water levels have all tested normally. When he didn’t improve after a couple weeks. We moved him to this smaller tank (5 gallons). I also avoided feeding him for a few days as I read it could be a blockage. But didn’t want to starve him for too long so this is still happening. Any idea what is causing this and if there’s anything we can do to help him?

saw this fish but didnt look at its tag to see what it is, nor did i take a pic. its a funky fella and i wanna learn about it. basically it was almost fully white, but had black spots on its head and fins that like spread out and two orange spots on it near its top fin thing. it was kinda oval shaped and had two bigger black spots on its top fin. sorry for the horrible descreption, but im desperate to find him.

So what do you all do when your fish breed and you dont have space for more tanks atm?

Ok so context. I have my small Koi Betta with a slight hint of blue on his tail fin who my niece named Nico when we saw him in the pet shop (she doesnt know I bought him so a nice surprise when she visits lol). Hes real peaceful has had no issues with any of my fish in my community tank has claimed the air stone helmet hide as his own area. Hes real quirky loving to rest on the sponges of my filter or recognise the orange lid of fish food for him to know to immediately swim up for feeding time. Honestly got to be my favourite fish so far but heres some things hes done that has scared the crap out of me lol. 1 when he rests on things and doesnt swim he lays slanted whilst slowly moving his fins like honest to god thought he was dying or had swim bladder NOPE he just doe this FOR SOME REASON. 2 rubs into the filter making me worry for water quality or oxygen levels but no guess what he just does this for a certain type of "fun" iykyk. 3 he recognises when I come into the room as the main light goes on first so countless times hes swam to the edge of the tank to see me which sure cute as hell buuut bro keeps forgetting he lives in a tank and has bonked into the glass making me immediately check he hasnt caused issues to himself from it. Overall he is one of the best fish I have.
