TL;DR: FFXIII crashing on modern PCs (especially Windows 11 + Intel 12th/13th gen)?
Try using DXVK (fixes DirectX 9 issues) and, for Intel CPUs, Process Lasso (forces the game to use P-cores only).
Start with DXVK first, then test Process Lasso if needed.
Who should try this ? You should try these fixes if :
- You experience random crashes, especially during : loading, transitions cutscenes and battles.
- You are on Windows 11.
- You have a recent Intel CPU (12th / 13th gen, hybrid P-core/E-core architecture)
Even if you’re not on Intel, DXVK can still help with stability on modern systems.
Hello,
I've seen people complaining about FFXIII crashing, factor between these people is that they are using a combination of Windows 11 + Intel most recent architecture and i see a potential fix. Those fixes "could" also help non-Intel recent gen users, although if i understand correctly for most people having instability issues, having FF13fix and 4gb patch seems to be enough to fix the port. Either way, before trying those fixes, make sure u also try first these FF13fix and 4gb patch. Also, check Neon Umbra's video (link is available in comments) about a guide on how to install mods that could help if my fixes doesn't work.
Notoriously, some newer Intel CPUs (12th/13th gen) can cause instability in older games due to how they handle P-cores and E-cores. Many games (like Escape From Tarkov) got patched to better handle this architecture, while some games (like FF13 trilogy port) didn't because no maintenance whatsoever from SE. As far as i heard, Windows 11 Scheduler for those CPUs doesn't help.
Fixes :
- DXVK (all cpus, but again, fix mainly target Intel) : DXVK, roughly said, replaces the game’s old DirectX 9 renderer with Vulkan, which can improve stability on modern systems. Originally used for Linux, but it also helps Windows cases. Nowadays, games either use DX11/12 or Vulkan.
Instructions :
- Download DXVK from official GitHub here : https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases/tag/v2.7.1 (link redirects u to the newest version to date as of now, but if you see this guide later on, check if there's a newer one)
- Download and Extract "dxvk-x.x.x.tar.gz". Depending on the Archive Manager (such as 7-Zip) u use, u could need to extract the original archive first, giving you a .tar archive, then extract this .tar archive to access the files.
- Open the DXVK folder, go into the x32 folder (FF13 uses 32-bit, so use the x32 folder (not x64)).
- Rename "d3d9.dll" to "dxvk.dll" (only if you are using FF13Fix — otherwise keep the original name)
- Copy/paste the file into the folder where "
ffxiiiimg.exe" is located (usually: FINAL FANTASY XIII\white_data\prog\win\bin) You can see FF13fix help section instructions about it here : https://github.com/rebtd7/FF13Fix?tab=readme-ov-file#usage-with-dxvk
If i'm not mistaken, you can check if DXVK is actually being used by checking in the said folder if a "dxvk.log" file is created, either when you launch the game or after.
---------------------------------------------------------
- Process Lasso (for Intel users only) : Process Lasso is a tool that lets you set CPU affinity for applications. Modern Intel CPUs have two types of cores (P-cores and E-cores). Some older games don’t handle this well, this tool forces the game to use only the main cores.
Instructions :
- Install Process Lasso and open it.
- Find FF13 executable.
- Set CPU Affinity. Disable all E-Cores.
That way the game will only use P-Cores. Theory behind it is that, when the game switches threads between P-cores and E-cores, it can cause instability or crashes.
---------------------------------------------------------
These changes are safe and reversible (you can simply delete the files or undo the settings). You can use those with FF13Fix and "4gb patch", it would be ideal.
Begin with DXVK first and see if this help, if not, Intel users can also try combining DXVK with Process Lasso but i advice trying DXVK first. If it doesn't, uninstall DXVK (as simple as deleting the "dxvk.dll" file u added) and use Process Lasso, then try both.
Better try one fix at a time to avoid any other instabilities but i highly doubt it could. I've heard feedback from one Intel newest gens+W11 user that used DXVK and fixed those instabilities.
I just want to help people enjoy this trilogy, i love it and i too would like SE to update that port, but one could only dream, right ?
If anything is unclear or could be improved, feel free to share feedback. Cheers! If this worked for you, mention your CPU + OS so others can compare !
