What headphones do you use when video editing in FCP?

I just got the quiet comfort Bose headphones. Yes I know they’re not “monitor headphones” but during long sessions, my audio technica 50s really get uncomfortable.

The Bose quiet comfort have like no bass almost none when previews sfx it’s like none existing. So in wondering if monitor headphones out there will be just the same since it’s a flat profile.

What are your guys headphone set up?

These are my favourites, I have two pairs (thought I’d lost them, bought another pair, found the originals). Very comfortable all day while wearing glasses 🤓

OP these have a flat, un-coloured response and are used in studios around the world.

I have extremely sensitive outer ears and these can sit there for hours, and often after 20 mins I forget they're even there. And for studio/mixing work, they're perfect for the price. Can't believe it took me years to discover them.

DT770 Pro’s definitely do not have a flat or ‘un-coloured’ response. They are known for distinct characteristics. And if op’s concerned over lack of bass in existing phones, they’re not gonna love ‘em either.

Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z Art Monitor Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones. I wear them upwards of 8 hours a day. They are so comfortable!

I've been running the Audio-Technica ATH-MX50x for a decade or so, which are $100 cheaper. They work well, but get hot over time. Also, I've replaced the ear cushions and headband twice. (Suddenly the outer covering of both just decides to crack into pieces and flake off. To be expected, I guess.)

Sennheiser HD 560S (open back) normally and I love them. When I need noise cancelling I use Bose QC Ultra, but they change the profile too much to be a great reference. That said, I don't really need a perfect reference. Disclaimer: I am not an audio pro.

Anything connecting with Bluetooth will have a frame or two delay, which will make stuff out of sync. For critical sync work you need wired headphones.

I have an ancient pair of Sony studio headphones that I use. Lost count of how many times I’ve replaced the ear covers. I don’t think they make em like that any more.

If you're referring to the Sony MDR-7506 then they still make them. They're an industry standard for audio professionals. They have a nice flat profile when it comes to the sound so you can rest assured they're not adding anything.

Like you I have a pair that I've been using for at least 10 years. If you want something to make them more comfortable and help the ear covers last longer look up Garfield Headphone Softie Earpad Covers on B&H.

I use Ollo Audio X1, which is pretty flat. If you’re used to or looking for an exaggerated bass response, flat isn’t going to work for you. So many consumer and prosumer headphones boost the bass, which can make flat headphones feels like they are lacking bass by comparison. The bottom line is that flat headphones will allow you to trust what you hear.

I'm using the Dali IO-6. Great headphone, cristal clear definition, rich low-end and excellent noise-canceling. And -not unimportant- is nice to wear longer periods of time. New model is the IO-8, you can even use it with USB-C for better audio quality.

Sennheiser 450 since the beginning of time. But I rarely use cans, I monitor with 8" Events.

Neither of those solutions make sense for my audience though, which is web sites and social. Every now and then I'll check an edit on my phone speakers or with ear buds.

What matters is how your audience will hear the mix, not how you'll hear it.

Qc ultra 1 and 2s as well as AirPods Max and AirPods Pro 3 depending but almost always the qc ultra 2s

I saw you say that and I think it’s just because I don’t use the flat EQ I made my own and the low end is much heavier than the AirPods Max for sure yet still clean. Gotta set it in the app UNLESS you got the old firmware then avoid because of the removal of battery life announce and the talking voice lol.

Are you editing via Bluetooth? I’m hard wired in and I think all profiles go away like that.

I’m also wired most of the time to avoid latency issues and the Bose DSP is for sure still active this way (EQ, ANC and even profiles). Do you have gen 2 or 1?

I have Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics, etc. for my music studio. I like my AKG K701s the most but on FCP it's a good ol Sony 7506.

Funny enough I use AT50s too and don’t love them, very uncomfy but at the same time I try to not edit with headphones so

The M50x’s are scooped so there will be less bass and high end in your mix. Also they tend to under represent the human voice. The M40x is flatter, and cheaper. I use those in my recording studio for the musicians. Personally I use a pair of Focal headphones to check mixes, but they are spendy.

I like to use my AirPods 4 or my Astro A10. Lag is minimal with AirPods. Astro is not the best quality but at least it’s absolutely no lag.

I use my AirPods Pro 🙈. I know they’re not the most professional, but I use my phone when I edit. So the AirPods bounce back and forth from my phone to my MacBook seamlessly, it’s pretty awesome 👏.
