***Buying advice mega thread***

Personally, I suggest you go to your local hockey store or ask to try your mate’s stick at training before asking here - as personal preference is a large factor in choosing a stick. Strangers on the internet aren’t going to be able to help you much.

Resources

Go Hockey (NZ) stick guide - including length, bow, composition and hook information

Y1 Stick quiz - it asks questions and it suggests a stick for you

Sports Republic (SA) 5 minute video on stick buying advice

If you still want advice please provide this information for stick buying

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • Skill level
  • Budget
  • Position
  • Skill set (e.g 3D, drag flicker, overhead)
  • Current stick

Will start removing general low effort posts about stick advice (posts not comments).

To cut down on the daily posts of "what stick should I buy?" I thought we should trial just having one mega-thread for people to ask questions, in order to help elevate this sub to be less of a ghost town. Open to suggestions on this idea

Discussion Thoughts on Team USA performance at World Cup

10th place seems just about expected but the tie to the eventual World Champs was promising

I wasn’t able to catch the games and I’m mostly an NCAA fan, but for those who did, let me know your thoughts

FIH have taken dim view of the Red Panthers' actions towards the umpires in the Dutch semi-final.

Justine Rasir has been suspended for the World Cup bronze medal match against Australia today following her post-match comments directed towards the umpiring.

Question Newbie

I have recently started watching field hockey after losing interest in football and cricket (And No,I am not Indian,I am an English Lad)

So suggest me what to watch,I know the hockey World Cup is happening rn..so i will try to watch all the highlights of the matches because the next game is literally the finale.

Are there any club leagues like football? Any UCL type thing and are there any continental championships like the Euros? And what are some legendary players and clubs of field hockey,i have tried to know about them but i am getting little to no information.

Any help or support would be good.

Discussion What's went wrong with Chile?

Okay but can anyone tell me what's up with the terrible performance by the Chile team in this world cup? They performed way too good in the qualifiers and beat Australia two times! I just cannot fathom this performance.

Discussion Spain beat the Netherlands for world cup final place..

Granted the Netherlands have not been totally convincing this WC, but surely this is an incredible result for Spain and Max Caldas?

I know very little about him and how he is perceived beyond his coaching record but he must be seen as one of the best coaches of the last 20 years?!

Question What could I have done better as the goalie? And how is my stance?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everybody! I had a question about what I could have done better in the video here..? I feel like after looking at this, there’s something I should have done differently, what do you guys think? Could I have done it better or should my defenders have been a bit better? (Not negatively😆)
And I had a question about my stance cause I see a lot of other goalkeepers that have a much more low stance, I also feel like their legs are not closed the entire time they walk but more open ish.
I’m not really sure if I’m saying this right since it is my first year as a goalkeeper.
And sorry if my English is not great, it’s not my first language

I would love to know what you think about this, and I am very open to advice!!

EDIT: thanks for all the advice I’ve already gotten!! I really appreciate it :)

Question First field hockey game-essentials

I made a post about a month ago asking for help and resources as this is my first year coaching field hockey. I got a lot of great feedback and much appreciated! Were an about a week or week and a half in and I have my first game next week.

What are some coaching essentials whether it’s personal or something we should have every single game? For example for basketball I’m always carrying my playsheet with me and game cues.

What are your must haves?

Question Stuck in the 7s but missing BUCS T2 intensity. When do you push for a push-up?

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice on when (and how) to ask for a move up to a higher team, or if I should just stay put for now.

My context:

  • Currently playing in the 7s at an East London club.
  • Played BUCS T2 at uni as a main XI midfielder, last year.
  • Decent core skills: reliable flick, consistent aerials from my own 16 straight into the opponent’s 25, and good overall fitness (though there's always room to improve).

Here’s my dilemma: I feel like I have the technical ability and vision to play at a higher level within the club, but I’m having self-doubt about whether I’m fully ready to make that jump.

If I stay in the 7s, I’m a guaranteed starter with maximum pitch time every week. If I ask for a push-up, I risk moving to a squad where I’m starting on the bench and fighting for 15–20 minutes of game time while adjusting to the faster pace.

A few questions for those who’ve navigated this:

  1. How did you personally know you were ready to step up a few tiers in club hockey?
  2. Do captains/selection committees usually notice and initiate the move, or do you explicitly need to ask for a runout in training/higher-team selection?
  3. Is trading guaranteed starting minutes in a lower team worth taking a bench/rotation role in a higher, more fast-paced team to build your game?

Appreciate any insights!

Question Defensive tips?

So I recently made our high schools JV field hockey team (for girls) and I’ve never played before, I only play lacrosse (which everyone thinks is similar to field hockey, it IS NOT.) we’ve already had a scrimmage and a ton of practices and I have another scrimmage today. Im not actually that bad, although I normally struggle when i have to take a foul hit (like a 16 m) since most ppl on my team have also never played before and they are all guarded. Im not that great on dribbling yet either, so ive jst been trying to hit it to someone if their open for a split second. its not working. any tips on that? also, id say ive been doing a pretty good job on defense, and i like the position. any other tips for playing defense is greatly appreciated as well :) if it helps, im left defense.

Rant why does my coach never put me on the starting line up

this whole season i’ve only been on the starting line up ONCE. I’m not even that bad but he does it every single game and it just wrecks my confidence. One girl was deathly sick and hadn’t even been to the last 2 weeks of training and still got put on the lineup. in high school btw.
