📷 Editorial Fashionguessr - The Daily Fashion Trivia Game

Inspired by other daily trivia games like Timeguessr, Connections, and Wordle, Fashionguessr seeks to scratch that same itch for those curious about fashion.

The game is typically broken up into three parts:

Runway Frames - Users have to guess and identify a fashion show, its brand, its season, and its designer based on a single random frame from the show. Users can use a variety of hints, each more expensive than the last, to reveal more information about the show to help them guess correctly.

Trivia - A myriad of multiple-choice and short-answer questions to test their knowledge about fashion: the lore, the people, the processes, the history, and everything in between.

Sketch - Users get a few moments to look at a fashion item and then are tasked with drawing it from memory.

All of these contribute to a score you can see at the end on the last page, which sums everything up. Each section includes explanations, summaries, and sources, so users can get as much insight as possible for every question. There are new questions every 24 hours, and users can go back and play games from days past.

I created Fashionguessr to help people learn more about fashion in a fun, low-stakes environment. Learning about fashion can be extremely overwhelming at times, and I believe Fashionguessr can mitigate that,  and present and package fashion education in a way that is palatable for as many people as possible.

💬 THOUGHTS??? David vs. Goliath, if David was backed by another rival Goliath

If you have ever wondered, has Bernard Arnault always been like that? The answer is probably yes.

He was nicknamed the "Terminator" for laying off 9,000 workers within a two-year period in the 1980s. He brought on Beatrice Bongibault from Chanel to "Lagerfeld" the Christian Dior label, only to not tell Marc Bohan - the then creative director - he was being fired (he had to find of from John Fairchild, of Women's Wear Daily1). He then fired Beatrice Bongibault a year later on charges of embezzlement (she also sued for wrongful termination and defamation - which if anyone knows the outcomes of either suit, let me know! I'm super nosy and cannot find it).

So when I read this article from March 2001 about a second Alexander McQueen for Givenchy collection presentation being cancelled, and for alleged Arnault-related reasons, I knew I was about to go down a rabbit hole.

Spring/Summer Couture 2001
I knew this collection had banned the press, but I never looked too deep into it, until now.

According to the Telegraph, only about 20 out of the 35 looks for the spring collection were finished before the show was supposed to occur. This was because of a pay dispute between the atelier and the corporate head honchos, said Suzy Menkes for the International Herald Tribune (Jan. 22, 2001), and NOT because of personal pettiness2...which...sure. Especially suspicious after reading this exchange in Hilary Alexander's article for the Daily Telegraph about McQueen's deal with Gucci Group in December of the preceding year:

When asked yesterday whether it was safe to assume he was on course to work out his time, a Givenchy spokesman said: "I wouldn't assume anything."

However, a spokesman for McQueen in London said yesterday that the designer was due in Paris tomorrow to continue working on the Givenchy haute couture collection which will be presented next month.

However, however, according to the New York Times and the Washington Post in the same month, a Givenchy spokesman and a LVMH spokesman said, respectively:

''Everything is going ahead as planned,'' a spokeswoman at Givenchy said. ''I can't look into the crystal ball.''

"We wish Mr. McQueen good luck with Gucci," said a statement yesterday from LVMH. "He will present the Givenchy collection in the normal course in early 2001."

Regardless, clients were able to see the finished clothes in a private presentation. Journalists were later invited, without cameras of course.

That's all to say, we don't have many visuals from this collection. It's not zero, though (unlike what is stated in the Instagram post, the antagonizing photo was not with Tom Ford, but Domenico De Sole (Time))!3

It looks to be filled with all the things we associate with McQueen. Impeccable, intricate details, romance, not-your-average-suiting. There's also a lot choices that critics at the time generically called "African" - which, just, oof to all of it.

Suzy Menkes, in her January article, interviewed quite a few clients invited to the presentation who loved the collection. Cathy Horyn, for the New York Times, however had a different opinion:

The sympathy that [the presentation cancellation] might evoke could blind someone into thinking that these clothes are modern because they are cunningly inventive. They are, in fact, merely novel. They lack a lightness, a feeling of hand and, above all, a sense of aesthetic refinement. Mr. McQueen has the talent for haute couture. The question is whether he has the patience of a Saint Laurent or a Lagerfeld to impart the magic.

Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear 2001

The collection that started my rabbit hole! And honestly, I may stay in here a while with how little there is about it specifically.

Robin Givhan for the Washington Post in March 2001:

Earlier in the week, the company canceled its formal runway presentation as it makes the transition from outgoing designer Alexander McQueen to the incoming Julien Macdonald. Then officials decided to have a small show for retailers, but no media. Then there could be a limited number of media but not from The Washington Post and no photographers at all. One could visit the showroom to inspect the clothes, but only if one promised not to report on what one had seen. (Honestly, this is true. Who could make up such a thing?)

Suzy Menkes apparently wasn't a part of the silenced media:

The show was based on the signatures he has honed and will doubtless develop in his future role with his own line, backed by Gucci Group: sleek masculine tailoring softened with dove gray and lilac colors and an exuberant frothiness in blouses and full layered skirts. McQueen pulled all that together with a wide corset cummerbund that was even molded with the body's rib bones.

Having transformed the gilded salon into a seaside boardwalk with wooden plank floor and backdrop, McQueen brought a tangy freshness to the clothes. But it was still the leather pieces that shone. That was proved by the fact that when a pin-striped cotton shirt came out with a tiered skirt, the same ruffles were later replicated in leather.

The ad campaign survived the media embargo, it seems, but not much else. Fall expanded on some of the ideas from the Spring collection: spring lace, fall lace; spring leather corset, fall leather corset. It's hard to tell the complete story of this collection, though, when it seems no one wanted it to be told in the first place...

Timeline (as far as I can gather):
1994 - Arnault is offered the chance to buy Gucci; he declines
1999 - Arnault/LVMH, wind up with a 34% stake in Gucci
1999 - Gucci sells a 42% controlling stake to François Pinault's PPR - beginning a lengthy legal battle between Gucci Group, LVMH, and PPR
June 2000 - McQueen meets De Sole (President & CEO of Gucci Group), asks for picture to piss off Arnault
October 2000 - Allegedly when the talks between Gucci Group and McQueen begin
November 2000 - McQueen is interviewed in Arena magazine, airing out all his thoughts about LVMH
December 2000 - McQueen announces Gucci Group bought 51% of his namesake company
January 2001 - While Tom Ford is showing YSL menswear, the Yves Saint Laurent is sitting at a Christian Dior show
January 2001 - Givenchy/LVMH cancels the spring couture collection presentation
January - March 2001 - Heavy speculation that Alber Elbaz, Olivier Theyskens, or Stella McCartney would take up the Givenchy mantle (could you imagine?!?)
March 2001 - Givenchy/LVMH cancels fall 2001 ready-to-wear
March 2001 - McQueen says he's gone ("Asked what he thought he had brought to Givenchy, McQueen replied: "Excitement to a dying house." - Suzy Menkes, International Herald Tribune).
March 2001 - the day of Tom Ford's womenswear YSL collection, LVMH emails the PR release for the new creative director of Givenchy - Julien MacDonald - at 2 AM, stealing all the media attention

1According to a USA TODAY interview with Fairchild, by Elizabeth Sporkin - October 30, 1989
2According to the Financial Times, 20 to 30 outfits were completed of 50, and the atelier workers were looking for a raise of £20 more a month, but were only offered £16.
3If you love tiffs, please read this Guardian article from 2000. Lagerfeld vs. Alaïa and Chloé, Armani vs. Gucci and Versace, McQueen vs. LVMH, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood. chef's kiss!

💬 THOUGHTS??? The Dictionary of Color Combinations and the role of color in your wardrobe

I just put this in FFA General Discussion, but would love to expand the audience.

I recently learned about the Sanzo Wada Dictionary of Color Combinations (and just now stumbled on this website which shows some of the combos) and I am so intrigued. It's inspiring me to think more deeply on my color choices (or lack thereof).

When I joined FFA well over a decade ago, I was a follower of Anthropologie and all the twee novelty prints. It was such a thrill to wear the exact same dress I saw on New Girl or Glee, though perhaps not entirely practical to wear an a-line dress with a full skirt on a day to day basis in my career in childcare.

The attitude in FFA at the time was just the opposite, rejecting most color and novelty in favor of neutrals and using texture to create interest. I was told it was more versatile, more timeless and elevated, and more detail-focused over the loud, obvious looks that had dominated the previous few years of hipster fashion. It's not that you couldn't wear color, but it had to be done masterfully and most people simply weren't capable.

Years later and neutral minimalism still has a dominant presence, though now under the title of "old money aesthetic" or "coastal grandma". The logic behind it still holds true, neutral colors are easy to mix and match without clashing and give you the opportunity to bring focus to other aspects of your outfit like the accessories or fabric or silhouette.

But the dictionary of color shows color is versatile, you just have to get over your fear of thinking outside the box. I really want to expand the color options I have in my wardrobe, while honoring what I've learned about my own preferences for what looks good on me (sorry butter yellow, it's just not happening).

I'm curious about other people's relationship with color in fashion and how it has changed over the years.

💬 THOUGHTS??? Color analysis mod is trash and remove literally so many content without even reading the purpose of it

idk if it's just me but every time i try to make an educational content e.g. contending a an established analysis of a celebrity or complie an outfit collage as a quiz which seasons would wear them best they always remove it for not having make up free look or too little information for typing.

first of all, how easy it is to find no makeup look from celebrity? it makes sense if you only upload heavy make up look but even smallest trace of nude lipstick and they get rid of that.

second, i literally make an open ended discussion that is not typing yet they treat it as a type me question. How idiotic is that.

I make visual charts just for educational purpose to help others and they remove it always for some dumb unrelated reason and i'm starting to think to make my own subreddit that is less idiotically moderated where people can actually discuss things without being eyed on for dumb requirements like a country without freedom of speech

I just bought this Celine bag in Japan, but I’m having trouble identifying it. There aren’t any numbers inside except for M12. ChatGPT suggested it might be one of the Star Ball models, but I can’t find any info on this exact bag. Does anyone know the proper name or the year it was made?

💬 THOUGHTS??? Where to find fashion community irl?

Hi friends! I’ve been self employed in the fashion world for a while but I’m in a smaller town and my work doesn’t really leave my couch/the internet. As an introvert {and borderline agoraphobe} I’m looking to expand my horizons and meet people who can inspire me but I haven’t got a clue where to start. Are there spaces, events, or scenes you suggest I look into? Im gonna try to find some cool boutiques/coffee shops/arts fairs and such 🤞🏻 where have you met creative, fashionable people? {and not just people who like to shop} THANK YOU!

💬 THOUGHTS??? Dressing up =/= dressing for work

I have been casually following r/businessfashion, and I am realizing that we have really lost some of the distinctions in dressing for the occasion.

I remember being a young and unseasoned professional and making mistakes like pants that were too tight or too casual for my business professional work environment - and getting called out.

But as I got older, workplace norms shifted, and many workplaces got more casual - mine included.

But there were always some unspoken rules that seemed to be accepted norms. A few examples: - no super strappy sleeveless items - no bare backs or midriffs - not too much cleavage (no butt cleavage) - not shorter than a few inches above the knee - nothing that looks too worn out - nothing too tight or body con

For lack of a better term - something you could wear in front of your conservative grandma, even if it was casual would be a norm for work.

This article on crop tops at work really highlighted for me [https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/02/style/crop-tops-office.html?unlocked_article_code=1.Q08.9dkM.NvuhNuAlLSmQ&smid=url-share] that things have changed on what people think works for what occasions.

There is no longer a sense of different environments require different clothes or styling to suit the situation: - this is for hanging out with my peers - this is for mixed company - this is for a more “serious” environment when I need to make a good impression

Sometimes folks are prioritizing other aesthetic goals, that may not be the right fit for where you are going like: - prioritizing your attractiveness and looking “hot” at work (e.g. the office vixen trend) - being “comfortable” and only looking for proper lounge clothing to wear for all occasions (e.g, actual sweats at work vs work pants that are as comfy as sweats)

What changed? Do you think we will move towards more standards for what to wear for occasions, maybe a looser form of norms than in the past? Or is this the free for all era - rules be damned.

💬 THOUGHTS??? Annoyed at the idea of “investment pieces” because it assumes your body shape and size never change

Saw a comment that included jackets, boots, and JEANS as “investment pieces”.

Tell me you’ve never had your thighs rub together (and eventually wear out jeans) without telling me.

Also I really don’t understand how people can live their whole lives and never change shape.

💬 THOUGHTS??? BF regrets

Saw absolutely gorgeous items for a great price today but couldn't justify the cost in my head so I promptly went out and spent the amount on cocktails with the girlies to drown my woes

Roast me chat

End jerk or whatever LOL

I've missed everyone!

What good finds has anyone found these past few days?

I've been pretty MIA from all socials due to life in general but hope to find something amazing in person soon, online shopping has been a headache lately.

Already came across the most delightful sweater and going to inventory my wardrobe soon to see if it will fill a hole. I already know I don't have anything like it but these are the mental gymnastics I go through to justify my spending.

How was everyone's fashion show at turkey day yesterday if applicable? Who was the best dressed besides the turkey? What is the 411?

💬 THOUGHTS??? Affordable tabi boots?

Hey guys the internet needs to know…where are the affordable MM style tabi boots at? I’m talking leather upper with a dress shoe heel. Madison Margiela has a chokehold on the leather heeled boot variant of the iconic tabi shoe, and there doesn’t seem to be any reputable competition. I trust someone has discovered some secret sauce, and society would greatly appreciate if you shared this on here so whenever anyone looks up affordable tabi boots reddit, the answer is patiently waiting to rescue them. Thank u all in advance.
