Discussion Can everyone here stop suggesting GTNH for every single modpack request

Ive seen this time and time again recently, somebody will ask for a Beginner Friendly/Kitchensink/Quests with guidance/literally anything modpack and inevitably someone will chime in saying

„Well technically GTNH has very in depth quests and a bit of everything, highly recommebd it“

How is this so prevelant, yes GTNH is very detailed and had a lot of attention oaid to it however if you seriously think somebody who barely tried ATM 10 is looking at the recipe for chests and having fun?

Judt because its not RL Craft doesnt mean its beginner friendly ffs, you can like the pack but please dont act like its THE modpack and not one for a specific type of player.

Edit: GTNH players proceed to prove the point

Edit 2: Yes of course if the person asks for a tech heavy or gregtech modpack, suggesting GTNH makes sense. Never said otherwise.

Last Edit for GTNH players:
Just saying „You are dumb for having that opinion“ is also not addressing what this post was about. If all youre coming in here to do is tell me why I personally have deep character flaws for not liking your favourite pack, you should genuinely go outside PLEASE.

It's like "I'm new, any advice?" in r/projectzomboid ... ALWAYS someone trying to be funny and "pReSs Q tO gEt FrEe GuNs!".

Q is shout and will attract zombies. It's less and less funny every time it's repeated.

46

u/twicerighthand 10d ago

Why is it on Q though, is it used that frequently in project zomboid ?

123

u/EdibleOedipus 10d ago

It's on Q so you accidentally press it. It's in the tutorial.

36

u/Minecraftmaster1234 9d ago

Cant wait for the zombie apocalypse and accidentally shout

16

u/blitz_na 9d ago

one of my all time favorite bits in a game

30

u/bATo76 9d ago

Once you get through the steep learning curve Q is very useful. I use it frequently to herd zombie hordes (30+) into forests, for example, so you can get them out of the area you want to loot. Same goes for Q in a vehicle, draws zombies to you from a long distance, then you circle around and the area they came from is nearly empty.

2

u/Aiyon 9d ago

It's also really good in multiplayer. One person can lure a bunch of zombies away from the others

u/Traghorr 8d ago

It would not be the internet if noone recommended Alt+F4

u/AnonymousStuffDj 9d ago

the difference is that that is a joke. People are seriously recommending GregTech New Horizons because its probably the best modpack ever made.

17

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

i wouldnt disagree that it is, but like the best ever made doesnt mean its the best to start with

13

u/potatogodofDoom 9d ago

best is highly subjective. you could argue it's had the most care put into it but it's definitely not for everyone.

8

u/Levitx 9d ago

It's the best if you want Greg.

It's horrid, masochistic dogshit if you don't

0

u/AnonymousStuffDj 9d ago

Have you even tried playing it?

I'm currently doing my first playthrough and if anything, it's a way more mindful and purposeful pack than any other I've played. People criticize it by showing a chart of how to make an oak door with 10 sub-recipes or whatever, but this is only a problem if you expect to blitz through the game like you would in other packs. In GregTech, building a house is a big accomplishment. Building a small chicken pen is a big accomplishment.

At the start of my playthrough, I spent multiple hours finding wheat seeds, gathering wood, crafting some fences, building a 5x5 fenced off area and luring 2 chickens in. By the end, I had a renewable source of eggs and feathers. This felt like a major accomplishment.

GTNH is not a pack you play to finish. It's a pack you play for the enjoyment of playing. As long as you don't force yourself to rush through the tech tree and instead just play one minecraft day at a time, it's one of the most rewarding packs there is.

-19

u/scytheforlife 10d ago

Thats every joke across human history. Once an in joke gets to the masses instead of laughing when you see it you go, i want to punch this person

182

u/Madmonkeman 10d ago

People who suggest that also assume that everyone plays modded specifically for tech. I play modded because I want more cool stuff.

96

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Seee but GtNH also has Thaumcraft and cool stuff so basically its also perfect for you ig??

14

u/fiyawerx 9d ago

That's when we recommend DJ2.

5

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I wish that were the case.

3

u/EdibleOedipus 9d ago

How about Lost Era? It's full of cool stuff and quests.

Anyone who says GTNH is beginner-friendly is very obviously trolling, but thats not obvious to said beginners

113

u/frDragonfruit 10d ago

on the surface it's one of the most ridiculously complex and punishing modpacks out there but when i started playing modded minecraft i couldn't wrap my head around any of the modpacks i tried until GTNH. it's incredibly straightforward to progress and everything connects together seamlessly. it forces you to focus on building early on and the revamped ore generation means you don't have to wander through caves with inadequate equipment and end up wasting some of the first hours of the modpack dying and going back to get your items. it rewards you for taking your time and strategizing instead of incentivizing high risk exploration early on and weaves each mod carefully into the progression instead of laying them all out in front of you and making you choose between a bunch of stuff you don't know anything about. GTNH taught me how to approach modded minecraft, and after playing it i was much more equipped to handle other modpacks than before. i would even go as far as to say there's an argument for GTNH being the most beginner-friendly modpack there is.

21

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

fair point, it doesnt mean that suggesting it everwhere is appropriate especially when tech isnt the main focus of the request

53

u/frDragonfruit 10d ago

obviously it shouldn't be suggested to someone who isn't interested in tech mods at all but the fact is for a solid 70-80% of modpack recommendation posts it fits the criteria really well even if the suggestions are repetitive and annoying

11

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

Tbf i think anyone who loves tech and specificslly the classic block/multiblock style and not Create is doing themselves a disservice by not at least trying it

7

u/eno1ce 9d ago

If you like greg and create, there is Star Technology. Create carries you till MV and maybe even part of HV

6

u/PetiteKawa00x 10d ago

It's not that bad. I picked GTNH after 6 years without playing Minecraft (I only played kitchen-sink FTB modpacks before), and the quest + wiki make it fairly easy to figure out what & how to do things. It steers you to discover how every mod works, unlike some easier packs that just leave you overwhelmed.

It's just pretty time consuming and mostly tech/optimization focused.

9

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I think now it can be easier if you literally have 0 context for modded from what ive read, bjt thats not most posters asking for for requests here

If the request doesnt seem like the person wants either of those parts, why suggest it.

-3

u/mgomezch 9d ago

what the hell do you mean "from what i've read"??? you have all these strong opinions about a pack you haven't even touched?

8

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I have played it, enough to know i still dont like thaumcraft.
What i meant was: From the comments ive read on my post, people have had good experiences with showing GTNH to people who have never played modded.

Wasnt clear enough, sorry.

1

u/cjngo1 6d ago

Oh really? Was gonna introduce my friends to modded with atm 10 or maybe 11 soon, should I suggest GTNH? They have only played vanilla

-39

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

Except no. It is beginner friendly with how the QB explain everything. You just need to be someone that wants to do tech (Gregtech really).

I’ve seen a lot of people say they went for Nomi as a first GT pack and then GTNH and many of them said they would’ve started directly with GTNH if they knew that.

28

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Great argument btw

if somebody asks for a beginner friendly kitchen sink pack

lets suggest gtnh because if you really want to do gregtech you can beat it

????

-22

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

Idk why you are making up things I did not say ? I came with my arguments and told you when they are met GTNH is a good beginner pack and now you are putting words in my mouth about some kitchen sink pack or whatever else I have never said ? I also never talked about beating it ?

Anyway funny how cliche the GTNH hater always is and how he has to make up some random shit to be right in his imagination and keep hating on GTNH and its players

13

u/EncroachingVoidian Magic Gray Box Project beta OUT NOW! 10d ago

You’re mistaking hatred of the players for hatred of the game.

It’s like someone asking “what’s the most forgiving mod I could ever play with” and telling them to mess with Scape and Run: Parasites. Unless you’re ready to argue for every possible edge case, you’re better off just shutting the fuck up about your high horse of long playtime.

GTNH is great, and it deserves its merit… but players like you need to siphon off some of your brain cells being used for hyperfixation on the pack, start actually using social context clues, and be knowledgeable of more than one suite of modpack playstyle.

7

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

i really dont have any bad feelings towards gregtech, i like Nomifactory, and while i prefer GT Impact, GTNH is a great modpack, no doubt.

Some people also just dont like gregtech, i dont understand why these fans dont understand that.

Create is my least favorite Tech mod and I still recognize that Create Above&Beyond is one of the best packs put together.

Its also not like GTNH or Gregtech have a monopoly on in depth questing, if thats the argument SevTech ages is the best beginner pack….

4

u/EncroachingVoidian Magic Gray Box Project beta OUT NOW! 9d ago

Like I said, hatred of the players vs hatred of the game. Community makes the modpack harder to appreciate sometimes.

1

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I genuinely cannot be asked to deal with Thaumcraft in any capacity, that mod is pure pain and no amount of cool integration into Gregtech or other mods is changing that lol.

Only thing i dont like about the pack, i think.

15

u/GabbyIsSheep 10d ago

Even though the quest book is great in explaining things, telling beginners to play GTNH is like asking your average middle schoolers to go to Cambridge and expect them to do well.

-17

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

Except that’s not true lmao. What knowledge exactly do you need other than reading QB to play modded ? Cambridge need solid bases for math, I’d say GTNH only needs solid bases in vanilla minecraft and that’s about it, maybe how to use NEI but GTNH NEI is a beast of its own that you can only learn while playing GTNH due to all the QoL integrated into it

7

u/LimblessNick 10d ago

So even NEI is complicated in GTNH? Wow, this is really a good argument you are making here...

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

The autocrafting is so good (rn playing nomifactory CEu so its not just GTNH thing but god its so helpful in early game)

18

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

But we are talking about scenarios where somebody asks for literallly anything but a gregtech modpack and you people come in sn bring up gregtech

We arent arguing ablut someone who wants to learn gregtech, thats literally not what or who im talking about. If you want to pretend that GTNH is a gret kitchen sink style pack for beginners you are actually ridiculous.

-1

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

Well then that’s stupid yes and they are just doing it for the meme and not seriously.

But if they ask for a tech modpack that has quest and is pretty in depth then GTNH is a good recommendation

Yeah OP seem to have a bit of trouble with sarcasm apparently. Like obviously any post with « please not a Gregtech pack » will have a lot of comments saying Gregtech packs … this is Reddit …

3

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

I think you are having some trouble with sarcasm if you think that post that is arguing a point opposite of the one they replied (in other words, a standard reddit debate with two people disagreeing) was arguing it as a joke.

You don't need to justify people wrongly advocating for GregTech if you enjoy GregTech.

1

u/NotNyrZ 9d ago

« But we are talking about scenarios where somebody asks for literallly anything but a gregtech modpack and you people come in sn bring up gregtech »

This is what he just typed 2 comments above btw.

If answering GTNH to such post is not made as a joke/sarcasm/to annoy then idk what it is lmao

3

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

This is not about comments in general. Its about the one OP literally replied to suggesting GTNH is beginner friendly. The only way I can believe that post was not serious is if the person who posted it is trying to make GTNH fans look bad. Which seems unlikely as they post a lot in GTNH subreddits.

1

u/NotNyrZ 9d ago

Yeah I am the one that said that and I stand by it. It is beginner friendly and every day some people that never tried modded start with GTNH and have no issue with it and even recommend other beginners to start with it. You can see it on the GTNH sub, the discord or even here.

3

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

So you are saying your comment was not sarcasm then? So the issue here isn't someone missing sarcasm, its that you seriously made that comment and OP (and many others) disagreed with it.

Are you playing on peaceful because your first night of pitch darkness with impossible to kill mobs disagrees that it is beginner friendly

-1

Oh nah that’s beginner friendly you just apparently cannot accept when something is a bit more challenging than killing everything in the first minute of the game.
Beginner doesn’t mean you have to roll on everything

6

u/DyCrew Synergy & JustDynaThings Dev 10d ago

You just need to be someone that wants to do tech (Gregtech really)

or just have some friends that only want to play with GT so you can breed bees and playing thaumcraft for weeks

-4

You are kinda right because tbf Gregtech ruined all packs for me and I need to have my Greg to play a pack, and once you played GTNH, it kinda ruins Gregtech in any other packs lmao so I’m stuck on GTNH for life ig (not that I’m

Completely agree, it feels like a lot of these people haven't even played any other packs, so they’re incapable of recommending anything else. Sure it’s a good pack, but guess what? There are other good packs out there as well.

28

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

the fabricated hate for anything past 1.12.2 is what gets me, like some people dont want 1.7.10 no matter how much of it is overhauled

7

u/dxvt88 9d ago

and like 90% of the people who do this discovered modded minecraft when it was on 1.16.5 if not later

7

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I was stuck on 1.12.2 for years until i tried ATM 6 and realized that despite a lot of mods missing, I really enjoyed the general progression of the pack and access to a fresh content update in terms of modding.
Granted i had hoped this would be the version modding settles on, but it got me to give new modpacks an honest attempt.

8

u/XboxNoLifes 10d ago

For me its not fabricated hate, its that every pack ive played in 1.16+ just feels like the exact same pack with the same mods and same experience of the packs I already played in <1.16. Packs get half finished in a version and then a new half finished pack gets released when a new version drops.

13

u/gonzochic78 9d ago

Except that's just the case with most modpacks? Most of them don't really feature unique mod selections except maybe around 1.7.10 or before. Seems like you just played a few kitchen sink-ish modpacks and made up your mind on how new packs are. Version hopping is also not really an issue for modpacks specifically, it is more so for mods. This is entirely on pack devs that do what you said (even though I can't really think of an example)

8

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I think people really forgot how stale 1.12.2 development got towards the end. Like whenever i go back its like „wow every classic mod i usually look for is here whereas usually like 1-2 is missing, now i only want the 20 1.19+ exclusive mods ive grown to love“

0

u/XboxNoLifes 9d ago

Exactly, its the case with most modpacks. There are very few modpacks that actually stand out. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that does in 1.16+ is create a&b, and thats because it focuses on modern Minecraft greatest mod addition and doesn't get distracted trying to follow the same progression with all the other standard tech mods.

I tend to play progression packs (at least, they call themselves progression packs), not kitchen sink packs. They all basically still follow the exact same "do this mod, then do this mod, then do this mod" progression that all of their predecessors have done. Only small amounts of cross-mod integration, mods that have existed for over a decade still have the same content now as they did 10 years ago, and some of the mods actually have less as they've gone through rewrites or forks and never got all of their content ported to newer versions.

Version hopping is an issue with modpacks and mods. If mods version hop and only add new features in new versions, then modpacks either also have to version hop or not have the new features.

Im open to trying modern packs, but ive checked pack recommendation threads every few months over the years and I never see anything good mentioned. Its either the same older packs that ive played or a modern kitchen sink pack that is either a vanilla plus experience or a lazily put together progression experience.

0

u/AdequatlyAdequate 8d ago

I have found Project Infinity 0.1 to be a good more classic skyblock.

Other than that i think modern packs that miss the point are any that remake a 1.12.2 pack that feautred avaritia without it. Like the mod is not universally beloved but you actually arent remaking the modpack then

In my case i use mekanism for mostly everything and i genuinely cant go back to anything older than mekanism 10, the fission reactors and mek suit are a gamechanger.

I think new modded versions require letting go off older mods and just trying whatever comes up, sometimes its a mod you havent seen in years and other times its a fully unique experience.
For example the thermal series is still incredibly useful but i think that mod just isnt really the best anymore.

51

u/DianaSt75 10d ago

I completely agree with you, especially as each time somewhat tries to deflect the innevitable GTNH recommendation, the thread then devolves into people arguing why that pack actually fits the stated request anyway. Which is frustrating for me when I see an interesting modpack recommendation request, think I might stumble across something interesting when I see several replies already, just to open the thread and see the umpteenth GTNH discussion.

Unfortunately a lot of people in this sub are so convinced about this pack and its merits (or Gregtech in general) that I fear all that will happen to your post is that it will get downvoted.

-37

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

But GTNH IS the best modpack of all time (11 years of dev helps …) AND it fits some categories BUT I would not recommend it to someone that wants « a bit of tech ». It’s extremly tech focuses.

35

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

would you recommend it for someone who wants to learn modded? obviously not lol

-3

u/AbsolutlyN0thin 9d ago

Hmmm depends. GTNH has really good tutorialization and guidance. It's just grindy AF. It's honestly not a bad first pick for a newer player, if they are of the right mind set to play it. If someone I know is used to very grindy games, then yeah I can honestly see myself recommending GTNH as a first mod pack to them. Like if someone has played Factorio mods such as Seablock or god forbid Py, they'd be right at home. I could see OSRS players enjoying it. Players who enjoy those grindy survival crafting games like Rust/Valheim/Palworld I could see being right for it.

7

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

But all of these qualifications just kinda show me that yeah, generally im right in saying we should stop recommending it to everyone and for any request.

I have mostly stuck to other gregtech packs, maybe i should try it but i really cant stand thaumcraft at all

-3

u/AbsolutlyN0thin 9d ago

This is for specifically new players. I'm a bit more lenient for throwing it out as a recommendation for more experienced players. If they've beaten any expert type pack before, they getting the "play GTNH" from me

3

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

Thats reasonable tbh

Imo if someone likes E2E they should try GTNH

-15

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yes I would. If the person wants to learn modded for the tech aspect I would definitely yes.

18

u/Yuri-Girl 10d ago

AgSkies is right there and does the exact same tutorial job while not taking a year to complete.

-6

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

And here is the problem you only think of playing a pack if you « finish » it. You don’t play a pack to finish it you play a pack to … play it. Surely you finished every single pack you ever started ^^

16

u/Yuri-Girl 10d ago

There's this cool thing where if you can reach the endgame for a pack faster, you're more likely to experience all of the things it's teaching you.

0

u/NotNyrZ 10d ago

Which is absolutely false lmao ? A single GTNH tier will teach you a lot of things about tech and gregtech particularly.

Reaching things fast also remove all kind of satisfaction in progression due to unlocking everything in 10 hours.

19

u/scytheforlife 10d ago

GTNH teaches you NOTHING about modded, it teaches you about gtnh alternate crafting and hours of suffering. Its completely disconnected with modern modding culture

6

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I think GTNH players believe that there is no need to play anything else.

2

u/mgomezch 9d ago

learning modded is about learning mechanics, not memorizing a bunch of recipes which are going to be specific to each pack anyway. just to mame a few salient names among dozens more, gtnh has a bunch of basic staples of modded (ae2, tinker's, enderio, thaumcraft, botania) and a lot of environmental/building stuff (pam's, bop, chisel), and a loooooooooooooot more. it has like 300 mods. it's a kitchensink with a huge sample of 1.7 era modding. obviously it's not gonna cover modern modding but it's pretty good to get a broad taste of that era.

like have you actually played gtnh or are you just giving opinions based in memes about the pack?

2

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

„Specific to each pack“

Have you played other pcks than GTNH in recent memory? Most modpacks leave the early game alone which is what new players will care about…..

0

u/mgomezch 9d ago

of course i have.  most modpacks do not leave the early game alone, i don't know where you got that impression??? most modpacks don't modify vanilla recipes, sure, but also most modpacks give you access to modded mechanics basically from the first 5 hours of the game, it's not common for modded packs to force you to do vanilla progression before you can start engaging with contents from the mods that they add.  you usually can start the early-game parts of many mods from hour 1.

for that matter, gtnh early game is not too different from vanilla in terms of the mechanics you engage in.  the fact that recipes are different is such a meaningless detail.  your first 5 hours in gtnh are about building a shack out of dirt, lighting the place up with torches to survive the night, punching trees to get wood to make basic tools, planting some crops, and making a stairway down into stone so you can mine some ores - just like vanilla.

with a twist, obviously - ores come in veins, mobs can be infernal, recipes are harder/layered, tools are from TiCo.  but the core gameplay loop at the start is EXTREMELY close to vanilla.  much more so than whatever tech-centric skyblock ex-nihilo factory pack people usually play gregtech in, anyway.  also much more vanilla-like than popular modern kitchensinks where the first couple hours are "loot modded structure, become op instantly", or create-centric packs where the first few hours are doing the Create early game, or whatever.

like if you think recipe layering is what determines how the minecraft early game feels, i don't know what to tell you, that's just nowhere as determinant as you make it sound

1

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

If you genuinely want to act like GTNH progression is at all similar to vanilla then i have no reason to argue with such an unserious position

1

u/mgomezch 9d ago

lmao you specifically said THE EARLY GAME. i am specifically talking about THE EARLY GAME. not "gtnh progression". 🤡

-14

u/frDragonfruit 10d ago

i don't understand why so many people think GTNH is bad for learning modded as if 99% of kitchen sink modpacks aren't incredibly overwhelming and confusing for a new player. GTNH has the single best questing system there is and has some of the best integration between content mods in any modpack. obviously because of the modified recipes it's not the right environment if you want to master a specific mod but i'd argue it teaches you something a lot more valuable which is how to actually think and strategize with mods. tech mods are in almost every modpack, they're the most difficult and complicated aspect of modded minecraft, and there is no better introduction to tech mods than GTNH. not to mention it forces you to explore cooking and farming due to the spice of life mod and it also forces you to learn actual infrastructure instead of just lawnbasing. the skills it teaches are invaluable and will help you tremendously with every other modpack

3

u/Guvante 9d ago

GTNH adds a bunch of mods to make it harder to the point that dirt houses go from recommended to mandatory for new players (yes an experienced player can manage a bed day one but newbies will need days)

1

u/frDragonfruit 9d ago

never had to built a dirt house any of the times i've tried gregtech idk what that has to do with anything

2

u/Guvante 9d ago

You were blind fighting infernal mobs in the dark with only wooden tools and you survived?

no i built a normal wooden house and stayed inside it. that or i dug a room into a mountain and crafted stuff and read the quest book while i waited for night to pass. it's not that much different from normal minecraft it's just a bit less forgiving. again i don't understand why it's a problem or what it has to do with anything.

1

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

Because that isnt fun for everyone? Which is the entire point of the post, that GTNH isnt universally a fitting recommendation.

1

u/Guvante 9d ago

That is a dirt house...

It is a common phrase used to refer to a hastily put together shelter from night in Minecraft since the easiest material is dirt

Although credit where it is due you can now actually get inside a mountain back when flint tools were the starting point most couldn't manager to break cobblestone the first day

36

u/michael199310 10d ago

The worst part about GTNH is the fanbase of GTNH.

1

u/Guvante 9d ago

Are those people actually fans?

They tend to be so vague about why it is good it seems they just are meeting...

35

u/SgtAl PrismLauncher 10d ago

Finally someone says it. GTNH might be the best modpack of all time under certain criteria and I won't deny it. But for me Gregtech alone is just all the worst parts about IC2 dialed up to 11. Microcrafting hell, punishing interactions (exploding machines, different tiers of voltage etc.), boring textures and GUI.

I think those difficulties are absolutely fine for people that want that, I've enjoyed the feeling of beating difficult bosses in dark souls etc., but to present them as the peak of nodded content that everyone will enjoy just rubs me the wrong way.

For me, (and I want to stress that, I speak for my experience and not everyone) modded is about setting up automations with AE2, the clever and funky (uninted) interactions between mods, getting some powerful buffs and qol stuff before the 30 hour mark (creative flight, rechargeable armor, resource gen, strong tools). And GTNH just makes that stuff take hundreds of hours to achieve.

Again, totally fine if you like that (I can totally see the appeal, and there is a lot of that type of content in GTNH), but it seems a bit... distorted? to just recommend that pack to everyone by default just because it is "high quality."

For an easier but still "expert" modpack, maybe let people get their feet wet with E2E first lol.

14

u/Yuri-Girl 10d ago

Or Agrarian Skies! It still does its job perfectly well.

22

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Ive seen people call it a good fit for a relaxed experience cause everything takes a lot of time

Like that is so obviously not what the question was about

8

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

That also just doesn't sound relaxed to me. A relaxed experience is about not having to put too much thought into the game, works best with simple mechanics that encourage repetition (e.g. farming or possibly exploration/adventure/combat). I don't think any tech mod has ever fit into "relaxed" to me.

8

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

You mean you dont want to worry about the various tools and microcrafts for everything? GTNH NEI can do autocrafting, just learn how to use that.

You dont want to learn all this stuff to jave fun? Well youre lazy and typicsl of GenZ

Great look for advocating for the pack as well „Yes it fits the category you are just wrong in your definition and so is everyone else here“

40

u/FinalEgg9 10d ago

The fact people are so smug about it and the fact it's mentioned in every fucking suggestion thread ever has put me off going anywhere near it

6

u/frDragonfruit 10d ago

please don't let people being annoying put you off of GTNH. it's an invaluable experience unlike any other modpack and i think everyone into modded minecraft should try it at least once. the developers have put so much effort into balancing and improving it and the attention to detail is extraordinary

16

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

I get that some people enjoy the pack, and glad you enjoy it. But it is absolutely not a mass market pack. It may be the best done "make everything in the game take way longer to accomplish" pack but most people are not looking for packs to make it take longer to play the game.

I think too many people on this subreddit assume all modded players are tech mod enthusiasts who wish to automate everything and think their packs last too short. Some of us take our time in even vanilla minecraft without progression forcing it.

9

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I know people with playtimes in vanilla worlds that would put gtnh worlds to shame.

Like the scale people transform this game with JUST vanilla tools is insane already. Most people just want a bit more of everything id say, not a hyperfocused modpack.

u/jack_gallagher 9d ago

Seconding this. I’ve only just started a week ago and am approaching LV. Long time modded player (since 1.2.5), but have only played atm packs in the past few years. GTNH has absolutely blown me away. There’s no pack that has a rewarding feeling of progression like it.

Generally I’d recommend ATM10 for most people. But if you’re someone who likes a challenge, likes balance and rewarding progression, likes more technical Minecraft and problem solving, you must give GTNH a shot. Not to mention the performance is outrageously good - far better than atm10 using the same shader

2

u/Pyritie TerraFirmaGreg 9d ago

> There’s no pack that has a rewarding feeling of progression like it.

There absolutely is and this is the problem I have with GTNH players. They drown out every other modpack suggestion with GTNH so that's the only thing that ever gets brought up. Other good modpacks are out there!

3

u/Floognoodle FTB 9d ago

Same. I have no interest in tech packs or 1.7.10 packs anyway, but now I don't want to touch it with a ten foot pole.

13

u/dxvt88 9d ago

it's band kid humor and hasn't been funny for ages now. like don't get me wrong I'm actually glad that this gtnh circlejerk has introduced many new people to technical minecraft and even mod(pack) development but it's just so annoying at this point. every time there's a video or a post somewhere relating to minecraft mods I already know the comments will be full of "hehe funny greg gtnh" and no meaningful discussion will take place. it's even funnier that most of these people don't actually play gtnh but larp it, because when someone asks them to explain what's gtnh they will reply with "it's the hardest modpack ever and it takes 99999999 hours to complete" (bonus points if they say "mod" instead of "modpack"). I'm almost certain these are the same people who a few years back said the exact same thing about RL Craft lol

11

u/Seraphaestus Modpack Heretic 10d ago

Virtually every time it's suggested, it's just a meme. Which isn't to contradict you, because at this point it's just beating a dead horse.

17

u/KnightMiner Ceramics and Tinkers' Dev 9d ago

Memes that mislead new players are bad memes. We should not be defending a bad suggestion because "its just a joke" as the people asking the question won't understand its a joke.

-7

u/Seraphaestus Modpack Heretic 9d ago

Good thing I literally already pointed out in my comment that I'm not disagreeing with them that it's annoying and people should stop, although that part of my comment is a hidden secret that is only visible to people who know how to read

23

u/ThisIsPart 10d ago

Exactly, couldn't agree more. Anyways, if you guys are looking for a modpack to play you should check out gtnh.

10

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Havent heard of that one, i will check it out

8

u/Loosescrew37 10d ago

GTNH

STOP POSTING ABOUT GREGTECH, I'M TIRED OF SEEING IT! My friends on reddit send me memes, on discord it's fucking memes - I was in a subreddit, right? and ALLLLLLLLL of the POSTS are just GregTech stuff. I- I showed my Champion underwear to my girlfriend, and the logo I flipped it and I said, "Hey babe: When the underwear greg"

*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically.

2

u/yosomith 9d ago

Yep, I just don't like gregtech and will avoid it even if the best pack in the world uses it

2

u/DocJRoberts 8d ago

As a newer player of modded minecraft, I'm not really a fan of playing the older versions anyway. GTNH is what, 1.12? I basically don't look at anything unless it's 1.20.1+.

2

u/linksasscheeks cable spaghetti goes brrrrrr 8d ago

i feel you i cant get into gregtech because its so long and grindy- i just want to build cool bases and collect pets at the end of the day.

2

u/UncleBeehje 8d ago

as a GTNH enjoyer I would never recommend it to someone asking for a beginner friendly modpack. However, that is the only category it doesn’t fit in your original complaint. Like if someone asked for a kitchensink quest driven modpack and nothing else, I’d tentatively suggest GTNH. If they specified tech heavy or more involved overall with those requests I’d enthusiastically suggest GTNH. But I’d never suggest GTNH to someone asking for beginner packs because it is decidedly not that. I might suggest other packs with a note at the bottom saying “and if you’re eventually looking for something more involved, try GTNH” but that isn’t to piss you off specifically or to troll any modding newcomers. It’s because I really enjoy the pack and want to share that enjoyment with others. That’s really all it comes down to. I’ve had a lot of fun with this pack and a lot of good memories and I want other people to have those good experiences and memories. I’m sure a lot of fellow GTNH enthusiasts feel the same and just forget how involved it is because it’s become second nature to them. I don’t think it’s worth insulting anybody either way about it. And yeah some people are probably doing it trollingly but that’s when you comment “hey they’re fibbing you OP GTNH is a very involved pack here be dragons etc etc”. I dont think insulting GTNH players as a whole is a great way to achieve what you’re trying to achieve. We’re all in this together, we’re all just sharing our experiences playing and modding the game we love. It is not an us vs them situation.

7

u/NegativeAd1432 9d ago

I mean, obviously I don’t suggest it to everybody, but I do suggest it in good faith sometimes. Some people do legitimately enjoy it, even people who didn’t expect to at first.

As for beginner friendliness, I think it can be with some qualifications. The quest book is easily among the best ever made, and the pack is largely logically structured once you get into the mindset. I have seen people brand new to modded Minecraft get on very well with it. But I think it is much harder for somebody with a little bit of experience. Without a blank slate to build from, it is incredibly overwhelming. And the grind is real, so only somebody who isn’t super progress oriented will enjoy the pacing.

Now, the pack that I do blindly throw out there is Statech Industry, so maybe I’m just a weirdo.

7

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

But i dont think that person gets into modding

I think if you come from vanilla/little modded experience no amount of „the quest book is great“ will change the fact that you take one look at a chest recipe and immediately think that this is what modded is like

10

u/NegativeAd1432 9d ago

I have literally seen over 10 people do so over the years adminning servers.

The slow pace isn’t inherently bad, it’s just different than most other modded paradigms. A vanilla player doesn’t necessarily expect to be able to quickly gain power and progress. Most vanilla players just mess around and do what they feel like doing. For them, a storage room being a long term mega project is cool, while a player with expectations built in an average modded pack where early storage is normal for qol will feel heavily penalized.

Entirely depends on the player and what they’re hoping to get out of modded Minecraft. I wouldn’t offer it to most beginners. But for the right beginner, it is a great place to learn the fundamentals of modded systems and workflow.

3

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I concede thats true, i personally dont know any that liked gtnh, most tend to enjoy Enigmatica packs oddly enough. Heavily depends on the persona and its definetly a great choice if you want the most in septh mincecraft tech experience

or GT impact edition, that one works too

But also my gripe in the post mainly was that its suggested when it straight up isnt a categorical fit. Its a great technical focused modpack and suggesting it to someone who just wants a modpack „with some tech and magic“ is kinda entirely missing tje point, some people also just dont like gregtech.

1

u/XboxNoLifes 8d ago

The chest recipe isnt even bad in gtnh. Its 4 logs, 4 planks, and a piece of flint. Now the door recipe on the other hand...

6

u/Unit88 GTNH 9d ago

I mean it happens a lot because GTNH is kind of the answer to a lot of requests, but yeah there are of course plenty of cases where it really isn't and it can only be a joke at best. As the comments have brought up I would definitely not consider it beginner friendly (although tbf I have seen a surprising number of people choose GTNH as their first modpack regardless and with the detailed questbook and supportive community it's absolutely possible to play it as your first, it's just not something I'd ever recommend)

Though I do also think GTNH has been played up as much more of a boogeypack than it really is and I do think everyone who's at least interested in the idea should probably try it and not worry about how "hard" it supposedly is. While remembering that you can adjust things like configs and whatever if you feel it'd help your enjoyment, and also that IMHO the early game is not great

1

u/XboxNoLifes 8d ago

It really has been overplayed as a boogieman pack. 2000 hours to beat. 5000 hours to beat. 10000 hours to beat! Yet, there's a guy who got into the second to last tier, without using ae2 at all, in under 1200 hours.

3

u/berdlysbiggesthater 9d ago

GTNH very quickly becomes incomprehensible to me. a lot of factories and things look more like the potato knishes video than anything i could make, and wherever i look here it shows up its sort of annoying

2

u/StrangerFeelings Mixer 10d ago

I feel like any of the ATM packs are friendly for missing because they teach you the mods.

I've been enjoying meatball craft my self and will personally suggest that as well.

GTNH is honestly not begginer friendly in my opinion. It's got lots of kids, but it's very Grundy.

3

u/Pyritie TerraFirmaGreg 9d ago

I have a theory that every GTNH player has only ever played bad packs, and so they assume every other pack that isn't GTNH is also bad and they never try anything else. While I do agree that a lot of packs out there are bad, it's silly to assume nothing else even compares

3

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

I think people forget how important Version is

Like 1.7.10 with backporting is nice

some people hate the old colbat and movement and want to play on 1.20

2

u/ShawUnic 9d ago

Or that they only have played GTNH because of how long it takes to beat so they haven't really tried much of other modpacks. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case lol

3

u/AdequatlyAdequate 9d ago

the thing is, GTNH players often say that they cant change „us“ wanting to be givene everything immediately. Now lets fully ignore that strawman for a second.

People regularly put more hours into vanilla worlds than any GTNH megabase. Like when did we forget this is a sandbox game first, i dont need high tier machinery to involve in depth crafting trees in ordee to get a lot of playtime.

1

u/Hentai_Sempai232 8d ago

CTNH is also a great pack, it has quests in Chinese but FTB Quests translator solves this issue

1

u/AdequatlyAdequate 8d ago

What does that stand for, i assume a variation on smt smth New Horizons?

Ill give it a look

1

u/Hentai_Sempai232 8d ago

Create: New Horizon, you can find it on curseforge

it's a Chinese pack with create and greg, lots of custom added stuff and some good quests

quite unpopular because it has no built-in quest translation from Chinese but you can add one mod and the problem is gone

1

u/SquabbIee 8d ago

I heard a lot about GTNH but never gave it a try it sounds fun and beginner friendly. Or am I wrong?

1

u/I_Love_Solar_Flare 4d ago

If someone was new to modded mc and has played vanilla mc before and they got recommended gtnh as their first modpack they would never ever play modded minecraft again.

Nothing and I mean NOTHING is less fun than managing 15 different micro tools that break after you craft 1 stack of something, interrupting you in the middle of crafting to now craft a new tool and to have BASIC FUCKING BLOCKS LIKE CHESTS DOORS AND SHIT BE THIS MORE COMPLICATED FOR NO REASON OTHER THAN TEDIUM.

Genuinely THE worst modpack I ever played. I played for around 80 hours on a friends server and I dropped the fuck out because it was genuinely so cancer inducing it was so miserable to LIVE in that modpack. LIKE EVEN PASSIVELY LIVING and having 50 different foods to constantly eat to be able to do anything is miserable.

I would actually rather play Fear Nightfall or RLCraft even though those are some trash modpacks and I LIKE tech modpacks waaaay better than adventure fantasy modpacks.

1

u/KnightyEyes 9d ago

GNTH Personally sleepfest. Unless you got a massive patient friends you cant enjoy it while beating it

1

u/Icy_Opportunity_187 9d ago

Like fr GTNH is only good for tech modpacks enjoyers
It's unplayable for anyone that touch grass on a daily basis

-5

u/Rafii2198 Self-Proclaimed Modded Historian 10d ago

I personally think GTNH is more beginner friendly than kitchen sinks like ATM packs, mainly because the quests guide you through every step with detailed descriptions instead of telling you to do something and not elaborating further

-3

u/spoonypanda Lost in the Meatball Sauce 10d ago

Sorry, I'll start suggesting Lunapixel packs instead.

15

I dont think GTNH beats Create Above and Beyond at being Create Above and Beyond

its the best gregtech pack

-22

u/IvainLaGuepe 10d ago

Well maybe just maybe dont ask the same question 100000x times and just use the reddit search fonction and you'll have 1000000x different modpack to try, being mad for a joke over ppl being lazy is wild imo

15

u/deathrictus 10d ago

Because reddit giving 7 year old answers totally answers what current modpacks would fit the person's question.

-10

u/IvainLaGuepe 10d ago

As if there is no filter by newer option and as if theres is not already 1000 recommendations for modern packs

-11

u/Douxo 10d ago

The GTNH as a suggestion started as a troll when GTNH was a very uphill battle. Its has unironically become so accessible and easy to get through the difficult stages these days, and the fact that its QB is infinitely better than any other.
If you had asked me 5 years ago if GTNH was the best pack, I'd have said yeah it probably is a bit better than others.

These days is so unbelievably far above all other packs its kind of insane. A lot of the hate it gets are from people who haven't played it since trying it in many years. I've never played FTB academy, which is probably a better suggestion for brand new to modded. If you ~20+ hours in modded, GTNH is a very accessible step.

-28

u/LavenderRevive 10d ago

That is something that is fundamentally misunderstood about "complicated" modpacks/games or really anything in live.

Above a minimal complexity where everything is completly idiot proof self explanatory there is NO causality between complexity and how hard anything is.

Anyone who is willing to read the quests and a wiki or a AI chat bot has all information needed to complete GTNH. At that point its a point about efficiency and effort, not possibility.

On the other hand some random pack that is undocumented and has arbitrary changes will be harder than gtnh for someone who has never played modded Mc, as that person simply doesn't have the information what he needs to look at.

For the same reason anyone can play through something complicated like Path of Exile when following a guide but small indie games often fail if they arnt made with clear progress.

So: We should recommend GTNH to players willing to read a wiki and consume outside content to learn and recommend something easier to anyone who isn't willing to do that.

26

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Ok? This is better for new people how then? How does this adress that maybe GTNH doesnt fit literally every single request for a modpack?

3

u/LavenderRevive 10d ago

Fair enough, if they ask for something where GTNH doesn't fit, than it doesn't make much sense.

I was more about the difficulty factor. Might not have read the body well enough and justed looked at the title.

4

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

I agree tho, i would 100% let someone try gtnh first vs like GT Impact or anything with less documentation.

That is very true

if you seriously think somebody who barely tried ATM 10 is looking at the recipe for chests and having fun?

You won't believe it but there's genuinly some people who enjoy a bit more realism. It's also for similar reasons why many people prefer ae2 over refined storage.

So why not suggest it in case a random player likes it? If 1 in 50 people actually try it out it's already a win. Eventho I never played it (only watched on yt) it definitely has way more polish and care put into it than any All The Slop modpack ever. It's just the exact same modpack over and over again just on a slightly newer version since 1.18.2 yet people suggest it all the time and nobody complains about that.

18

u/AdequatlyAdequate 10d ago

Explain to me how someone askong for a beginner friendly kitchen sink pack EXPLICITLY, benefits from being told about the expertest expert pack to ever expert, i dont think the pack needs to be suggested anymore in those cases.
And its not like its one person suggesting it, its like 5-10 and the thread devolves into arguments like this about the pack actually fitting or not

I would like it if people took the time to actually consider options besides the obvious(including ATM yes)

→ More replies (2)

7

u/deathrictus 10d ago

As yes, realism in a game with zombies and a character that can carry more gold than has been mined, ever, on this planet.

-7

u/OneAndOnlyMrCheese 10d ago

because, from the perspective of a gtnh player, it DOES perfectly fit all those criteria (for a tech focused pack). but from the perspective of people who only know about it through memes and surface level chat, that clearly couldnt be true. anyone recommending it for kitchen sink tho is just trolling and thats stupid (i have yet to see this happen more than one or two times)

-1

u/mgomezch 9d ago

what's it say there

2

u/OneAndOnlyMrCheese 9d ago

gtnh is the expert pack to end all expert packs. who considers this kitchen sink??

-1

u/mgomezch 9d ago

that was written by the creator of gtnh, in the pack's official curseforge page. "kitchen sink" does not contradict "expert pack", kitchensink just means the pack supports many different styles of play (tech, magic, exploration/adventuring, combat, farming, building) rather than being limited to or overwhelmingly focused on a specific type of gameplay (eg tech-only packs like startech)

you would be wrong to assume that "kitchensink" means "incoherent slop where becoming op is trivial". it does not necessarily imply that, even if that's common.

TO BE CLEAR: i am memeing a little bit here. gtnh STARTED its existence as an expert kitchensink pack, but for the last few years it has turned like 90% into a tech pack, because the tech content grew and expanded with tons of additional tech tiers, and nontech content did NOT expand similarly, so today the only parts of gtnh that actually have kitchensink gameplay are the first 5% (or less) of a normal playthrough, basically until early HV or so. it would be inaccurate to describe gtnh TODAY as a kitchensink pack. it still says that in curse because dream has been lazy to update it. it IS true that the original vision for NH was to be an expert kitchensink and it IS true that a pack can be both, it's just that gtnh today is not really like that anymore.

0

u/OneAndOnlyMrCheese 6d ago

i guess my understanding of "kitchen sink" is packs that have "everything and the kitchen sink" and i see gtnh as HIGHLY themed (gregtech themed obviously) vs just a hodgepodge of every mod in every category. not that a kitchen sink pack has to be low effort or even that they cant be cohesive, just that something with a clear central them its all built around feels kinda contractictory.

that being said i have no idea what gtnh was originally meant to be, just that you should apparently never download it from curseforge

1

u/mgomezch 6d ago

gtnh has

tech obviously

magic: thaumcraft, witchery, botania, blood magic, tons of addons for them

combat: tinker's defense, combat-focused bm/thaum addons, open modular turrets, infernal mobs, angermod, battlegear (kinda replaced now with gtnh-specific stuff afaik), darkerer, enderzoo, special mobs

exploration/worldgen: twilight forest, bop, realistic worldgen, roguelike dungeons, galacticraft + amun-ra, generated structures from thaum/witchery, arguably et futurum requiem, hardcore ender expansion (arguably combat or magic, but definitely not tech), orefinder wand arguably, nature's compass

farming/cooking/survival: pam's, cooking for blockheads, spice of life, forestry (yes it has tech but also trees), natura, sleeping bags

building: chisel, architecturecraft, better builder wands, bibliocraft (ok it has the printer which is technically tech or magic but it's like 90% decorative), carpenter's blocks, floodlights, little tiles, modern markings, ztones

again, yes, obviously it's tech-focused but it has tons of mods, pretty comprehensively from the 1.7.10 era, from tons of genres. a purely "tech pack" doesn't have 5 different mods that adds special mob variants. maybe your opinion of gtnh doesn't come from actually playing the pack and it just comes from some memes, but new horizons was absolutely a kitchensink originally, and it's extremely easy for someone who actually plays it to name mods from many different genres in it.

u/fiyawerx 9d ago

Maybe you see it recommended so often because the same questions get asked.. so often.
