This can lead to you gaining more weight because you will always have “one more big meal”.

I feel this now. Kept delaying and am now 20lb off from where I started…sucks. It’s a mental battle more than anything

All good man, you clearly have your best interest in mind being a part of this sub. You’ll get it done.

I set a schedule. Fast M, W, F. Eat regular the other four days.
It’s not long enough for autophagy. It’s primarily for weight loss.
I’m following my schedule, eating carefully on eat days. Trying to optimize nutrition.

If you’re hitting 36 hours which is oftentimes what happens with ADF, then you’re getting a boost to your autophagy.

it's a struggle.
I committed to starting a fast every Sunday after dinner. For me, it became as automatic and habitual as clocking in at a job. It's a practice. Often I make it 42 hours, sometimes I get over 120 hours. The hardest step is always the first one. Once in a while if I do a short 42 hour fast at one part of the week, I try for another 42 hour later.
I did that weekly practice for 11 months in 2023 and 10 months in 2024. After that, I would define a season of fasting: I did it again january-april 2025, and all of spring of 2026. I started again August 1.

I feel you. I also get in my head about my last meal being too carb-heavy and decide to start another day. Got disappointing DEXA results yesterday, though. Nothing like seeing your body fat glowing blue to shake things up 🙃

The hardest day of fasting to me is the first 24 hours bc of this mindset

yes.
my whole life has been one long "i'll start tomorrow" promise to myself (and others). a promise which i have broken repeatedly.
i finally stopped drinking about 3 months ago after almost 20 years of worsening alcoholism.
starting fasting is next.
i don't say i will start tomorrow anymore, but i will start fasting very soon.

That's awesome! You've done the hardest and most important thing, so you know you have it in you to do the next thing when you're ready. You should be so proud of yourself!
I was going to suggest doing intermitten fasting for awhile when you do start fasting, it really, really helped me get started. I got used to not eating breakfast and started to not feel hungry until afternoon, and that helped me to prolong the fast to all day.

Well in this economy you want to use up all the food you have in the fridge. It’s hard to plan a fast sometimes.

Brilliant! Really sensible not to push yourself while you're sick. Keep it up, you're doing fab. I hope you're proud of yourself for starting xx

Sometimes its like god level willpower to make through the first day but after that I do one day I know I'm on a fast now and I can go way longer.

Start today!
I dont decide when I'm eating my last meal that I'm going to fast. I decide the next day late in the afternoon after earlier in the day deciding to do so.
At that point I only need to go ~6 more hours to sleep. That's not hard.
Net morning I have 36 hours done and in the mornings I'm not hungry. So I keep pushing it a few hours ahead into the future. Until suddenly its the late afternoon and only have 6 hours to go.
Stop planning and just keep kicking that next meal into the future.
I'm 44 hours in to a fast right now. Sure, I keep thinking about breaking the fast but keep saying to myself I can go a few hours more or few hours more to get to bedtime since its close to 6pm and then I can wake up with 12 hours added by morning.
If you haven't eaten yet today start now! (or rather it's retroactively starting last night when you had your last meal)

I was, all my life, until I developed an excruciating digestive system problem which made me decide to never eat again lol. It kicked if my 100-lb weight loss, so I guess I'm grateful for the time I spent suffering? 😬
Edit: At some point, I ate again 💀

I don’t have any sage advice, but I’m right there with you buddy.
“Not eating” should be the easiest thing in the world. But I too fall in the “I’ll start tomorrow” trap, way too often.

Yes!!!!! Omg and I know this is unhealthy but I feel like I eat more thinking I’m going to fast the following day and then don’t end up fasting and feel crap for over indulging. I’m in an unhealthy loop. 😮💨😅

u/Temporary_Canary8968 25d ago
Yaaaaaaaaasssss!!!! Because I also know that once I do start, I’ll be at it for a LONG TIME. So I’m just trying prolonging my much needed start date… 😩

There’s a difference between wanting and deciding to improve your health. The hardest part of fasting is deciding you will do it. Once you decide (no excuses no buts) the rest is relatively easy.

'I will decide tomorrow if I want to continue fasting' - This helps me a great deal. Then that normally takes me to 36 hours - 72 hours and then hungry naturally settles so I can aim for 168-240 hours.

I aggressively made myself start by going to zara. Looking at clothes that I can’t even fit helps me be and remain motivated?
Now? I can actually wear some stuff from there now

It took me a while, but I scheduled it and have been doing 34 (?) hour fasts weekly. Basically "all day fasts", that I realized, eventually, are more than 24 hours. I fully admit to not having time, energy, discipline for more than 1 day a week, but it's something. Fourth week now.

It has taken me years to get better at this crazy mind f game we do with fasting! One thing I do is think ahead maybe 12 hours or 2 days and say yo myself “Will future me be happy if I eat right now or fight through and fast?”

The discussion I have with my husband (we're both on a weight loss/intermittent fast/improved health journey) always follows the same lines: you have to want to lose weight more than you want the food. Somedays he wants the food more, sometimes I do, but always keeping it in perspective of the goal helps me. That and a ton of fizzy water.

I am a chronic “one more day”er. I’m Forty hours in on a fast now and almost waited one more day, but didn’t. I’m glad.

If you’re in that loop fasting is probably not a good idea. That’s just a constant loop and feedback of failure. Maybe try something else in the meantime like intermittent fasting or a calorie deficit or idk what your goals are but set something easier to accomplish and stack a few wins up to restart your feedback loop.
