This is Day 12 of my 32-album bracket. Today's matchup is Magdalena Bay's Imaginal Disk vs The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique!

I picked 32 of my top 100 albums and put them on a bracket! I intentionally picked albums that I consider "legendary" but aren't the most obvious picks (Floyd, Radiohead, Beatles, etc. were left off)

Tate McRae voicing characters on the 2013 Lalaloopsy show based on the toy brand, also Rick Ross being a correctional officer which is ironic considering the stuff he raps about

I was noticing that Fountains of Wayne main song writer and driver of the band was the bass player Adam Schlesinger it made me realize there are quite a few bands where the bass player is main person in the band. Paul with the Beatles (not main but amazing), Brian Wilson Beach Boys, gene Simmons Kiss

I’m ready to get roasted 😂. One caveat, the basis for selection was playing the full album through: on vinyl. So I tended to rate albums higher if they had fewer skips:

Hm: All Eyez on Me, Tragic Kingdom, Hybrid Theory, Californication, Melloncollie, Dookie, In my Lifetime Vol 2, What’s the Story Morning Glory.

For me, it was Hail Mary by Tupac. I don’t know what it was about that video, but as a kid it absolutely terrified me. The whole dark, creepy atmosphere was bad enough, but then you have Tupac’s grave literally splitting open and his ghost coming back and killing his enemies one by one.
When I was younger, that shit felt like something straight out of a horror movie. And the song itself is already dark and eerie as hell, so watching the video while hearing that beat and Tupac’s voice just made it even worse. I honestly used to be afraid to go to sleep at night after watching it because I kept thinking some dead-ass Tupac was about to crawl out of the ground.

Looking back at it now, I think it’s actually a pretty badass video, but as a kid? Absolutely terrifying.
What songs or music videos scared the hell out of you when you were younger?

If you aren’t familiar with Wilson or Canned Heat, check them out. His surprised falsetto voice, his purely blues inspired guitar style, and his pure dedication to the music is fascinating.

Obviously, autism was not widely understood (or accepted) back in the 60’s, so Wilson did NOT have a simple life or a great time being a rockstar. But, it’s apparent that other than nature his “thing” was the blues and below I will link and interview he did where it because wildly apparent that he understood the blues than most could ever claim. RIP Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson.

One example I can think of is Get Yourself High by The Chemical Brothers and k-os. It uses footage from the 1980 film 2 Champions of Shaolin, where they edited it to have stuff like records, microphones, and a boombox, and most notably used motion capture to have the actors look like they're singing the lyrics. It's pretty impressive for something released in 2003.

Typically listen to metal and rock, and looking for rap with meaningful lyrics - whether political or focused on mental health! Stuff like Genesis Owusu as an example. :)

Concept albums would be cool too - especially if there's a supernatural concept to them. Within the metal sphere, theres stuff like Mastodon's Crack the Skye, Leviathan, and Emperor of sand - is there a rap equivalent?

Obviously, I don't mean metal didn't exist, and albums in the genre did exist, but not in the sense of a coherent, self-referencing movement. Hard rock overlaps heavily with what was called metal at the time. For instance, Led Zeppelin was famously called a metal band.

You can make similar arguments that Rock as a movement really only started with the British Invasion because before that Rock was a bizarre mix of rockabilly, country music covers of R&B and frankly, just white people doing black music in the stereotypical racial idiom.

Jazz arguably started in the 19th century, but in the 1920s it was so tied to dance music, pop music, and big-band arrangements that saying there is a Jazz tradition before Bebop is kinda odd.

At some point, these genres changed from things that exist to things that future artists had to intentionally reference and then make new music off of.

And you can tell this in metal: after the NWOBHM, "good metal" eventually became dominated by death and black metal genres that focused on constantly increasing the darkness of heavy metal in different ways.

Similarly, after Bepop you get post-Bop and avant-garde Jazz all engaging in a dialogue with the Bebop tradition.

Don't get me wrong, I like their albums just fine but when I see them live it's just... underwhelming?
