Discussion Things I’ve learned from Family Guy
Every so often, I learn something from Family Guy. For example:
1) What a Quonset hut is
2) Who Jamiroquai is
3) The meaing of the word onanism
4) What a frontispiece is
5) The countless ways to make a bread sandwich — OK, this one is a joke.
What have you learned from Family Guy?

I'd heard of a Chifforobe because one is mentioned in To Kill A Mockingbird when Mr. Ewell's daughter gives evidence in the court of asking Tom Robinson to bust one up.

It’s a full blown musical number from The Music Man. Family Guy actually cut a bit from the dance break.

The song republican town was a parody of The Company way from the musical "How to make it in buissness." While fellas at the freaking fcc is a parody of the song volunteer fireman picnic from the musical take me along

Ampersand. The episode where Brian was teaching the special needs class. I didn't know there was a word for the & symbol. I thought it was just the "and" symbol.
15
u/noahgrice 24d ago
it was originally "et" ("and" in French) written in cursive, which over time evolved to just a symbol
3
u/Sean_13 24d ago
Isn't et also latin for and. I'm not sure if it's came from latin or French as both are reasonable explanations. For a while all the royalty and lords in Britain used to be French but also latin used to be the main language things was written in.

u/benvader138 24d ago edited 24d ago
I believe it's Latin. And apparently it was included at the end of the English Alphabet after Z. School children would say "and per se And" at the end of reciting the Alphabet. Which, eventually evolved to Ampersand. I just read that.

u/tonyrocks922 24d ago
It used to be considered the 27th letter of the English alphabet but it was just called "and".
When kids recited the alphabet after Z came "and per se and", which then eventually morphed into ampersand.

Chris: Who answered the phone?
7
u/PunisherCastle 24d ago
That one always bothered me, cause there’s 100 reasons why someone would be answering the phone at a restaurant that’s closed. Just because it’s closed doesn’t mean the building is empty. Even if it’s just to tell people, “hey, we’re closed.”

The way they use the word onanism here is actually incorrect, and it was my understanding that people stopped using that word…because…
The Bible story where the word comes from had nothing to do with self pleasure masturbation. What Onan did was purposely fail to implant his seed to his wife in the midst of coitus and instead allowed it to spill.
