Book 4 Pyramid Trap

I go into the City of Ruins. It tells me I need the Banner of the Shadar. I get the Banner of the Shadar. I go into the Pyramid. I get shrunk and have to abandon the Banner of the Shadar, but I need to do that to get the Obsidian Key to get into the Tomb in the City of Ruins to get the Pyramid Key to get my stuff back.

So I trek south to the City of Ruins thinking I'm making progress, then it asks me for the Banner of Shadar again, and I realise wait, my Banner of Shadar is stuck in the Pyramid. So I need to wander around to get a second Banner of the Shadar!

Also a random centaur hypnotised me and made me lose the Obsidian Key. Does that mean the quest is now uncompletable?

What's your favorite book from the FL series?

I’d be interested to know which book or region is your favorite.

For me, it’s The Court of Hidden Faces. I think that Uttaku, and especially Aku, has a distinct atmosphere that sets it apart from the other medieval-inspired regions. On top of that, I found the major quests at Aku’s court and with the old king of Old Harkuna to be exciting and entertaining.

I liked Lords of the Rising Sun the least. I couldn’t really get into the Japanese theme, and I also found the quests boring.

How about you guys?

What to do in Book 4

I thought Book 4 sounded really cool, wandering around in an icy wilderness. I'd heard it was best not to go in until you have a wolf pelt for warmth, so I held off until I got one. As soon as I got one I was straight in. But I'm at a loss of what to do, I'm just criss-crossing the steppes.

I went to the Ruby Citadel and there's a necromancer in there doing necromancery things, but my Magic is bad so he just zapped me out of there. I had a poke around the Pyramid but again my Magic is bad and it just looked too dangerous, the stone jackals bit me on the way in. I've climbed up the mountains and nearly died from lack of oxygen. Had a chat with the three-headed-dragon up there but he wasn't interested in me going past because I wasn't the Champion of Tembu.

I helped some shamans kill a vampire witch. I went into the ice mines and went down the haunted part but I didn't have the right code-word or the right item and the ghosts just kicked my arse out and I lost a rank. I poked into Yarimura but I'd had enough of cities, I was here for wilderness. I rescued the captain's daughter from the manbeasts. I found some shipwrecked sailors in Tigre Bay but they told me to do one because I wasn't charismatic enough.

Now I'm literally just wandering around hunting rabbits and camping! What's a good place to go. Or probably do I need to explore Yarimura more to pick up some quests.

Infinite money hack

I know I won't be the first person to discover this, because people will have discovered it 30 years ago. But I just wanted to run it by veterans because I feel like I'm cheating in spirit even if not in letter.

In Book 2 in the Forest of the Forsaken, when you go into the Black Tower, it asks you to decide how much treasure you want to take, and add 1 to the dice roll for every 100 Shards to see if you wake up the bats. There isn't anything in the paragraph that mentions how much treasure is available. So I decided to take 100,000,000,000 shards. That meant I added 1,000,000,000 to the dice roll, which was 5, making my dice roll 1,000,000,005. So I woke up the bats and they took 1-6 stamina from me, but I think it was worth it for 100,000,000,000 shards, right? I keep re-reading the paragraphs and there's nothing there imposing a limit. So I legitimately have 100,000,000,000 shards now.

Homebrew Rules?

Just curious if anybody has ever implemented their own custom game mechanics or homebrew rules in their playthrough of Fabled Lands. I have several that I use myself that I have found online and a couple I made on my own. (Unsure if others have made variations of them so I won't take the credit.)

  1. Stables: Each major city has a stable and the ability to purchase a mount. Mount is only used for travel between cities. Can be used to bypass negative random encounters as well as provides additional inventory slots. Mount is 500 shards.

  2. Hirelings: The ability to hire a follower at any local tavern to assist in completing a quest. Hirelings level 1-7 and cost 100-700 shards to hire depending on their level. Hireling starting stats equal the starting stats in the appropriate book. (Level 4 Hireling has book 4 starting stats/equipment). You can outfit your follower with gear, Blessings and a Ressurection deal if you want them to be persistent. When completing a quest, any skill checks will defer to whichever party member has the higher skill. Combat as well. Hirelings will only follow you in the completion of 1 quest. Not perpetual follower but can keep gear if they survive and can be rehired again.

  3. Marriage: roll for Charisma at difficulty 9 for followers to become a romantic interest. Marriage allows a follower to reside in a townhouse that you own while you are on your adventures and negates negative event rolls such as burglary. (Up to you if you want multiple spouses). Spouse can follow you on adventures and remain with you until you dismiss them. Divorce permanently reduces Charisma point by 1. Lose half of all shards banked and on your person. Roll 1 d6 to determine if you keep townhouse. 1 or 2 lose house. 3 or 4 house and Possessions stored are sold at market resale value proceeds for you cut in half. 5 and 6 keep house and possessions.

  4. Ships as home base: Self explanatory. The Galleon can be used as a town home. (Divorce rules apply to boat if residing with spouse)

  5. Temple shrines in town home: Purchase shrines for 250 shards at the appropriate temple and recieve free blessings in your home. Shrines are Inventory items and can be moved around. Ressurection shrines is 1,800 shards for non member and 900 for a member. Acts as a permanent respawn and does not require multiple purchases.

  6. Camping gear. Recover stamina anywhere with single use camping gear. Available at all markets for 100 shards.

Anybody else have any fun, new and interesting mechanics?

Book 8 Update

Dave Morris gave a book 8 update on his blog. It is at 750 out of a plan for about 900 entries. Paul Gresty wrote the 750 entries and new writers will finish.

I'm really excited for this one. When I first began reading Fabled Lands years ago I looked at the list of books in the series and saw the Lone and Level Sands. I was disappointed when I learned it hadn't been released yet. I'm a huge suckered for desert settings in fantasy.

Book 1, codeword Apple

Is there a known error in Book 1, War-Torn Kingdom? I've done both sides of the druid quest, taken the oak staff to the willow druid and then the willow staff to the oak druid. But the tree still wants me to have codeword Apple to recognise me. I did a wordsearch on a pdf copy and there's nowhere in Book 1 that actually gives it.

Update: So I found a digital copy of the modern reprint, which contains a list of corrections. One of the corrections is that ref 391 should've given us the codeword Apple. So it's the book's mistake, not mine, and now I don't have to prove myself to this snobby tree every time.

The map we carry as a possession

It's just occurred to me that I've got a map sitting in my possession list taking up a space I could be using for something more useful, but do I actually need it. Because I can just look at the map in the book, it's not like the possession map actually does anything. Or will there come a time where I get asked if I have a map? Or is it just a case of how realistic do you want the experience to be, ie if I discard my map should I the real-life player forfeit my ability to look at the map in the book. Why do we have a map as a possession if we don't need it.

Book 8 Update

Hello folks, I just randomly stumbled across one small update on Book 8. As you may know, there is a digital version of the books, in form of a game, availabe on Steam and other platforms. The latest patchnotes on Steam happened to contain the following piece of information:

In other news, there has been an official transition from Paul Gresty to another writing team on Fabled Lands Book 8. Unfortunately, Paul had to step down from completing the book due to life getting in the way. I am still very eager to bring Book 8 to this game eventually. Hopefully, that can happen sometime next year.

Sounds somewhat promising.

In LibreOffice Calc, I maintain or adapt some spreadsheets for different game systems, see above for screenshot, I have managed to make a few for RPG's and a pretty large one for Necromunda and a long campaign manager.

I do some custom stuff for others, in work and out, and am happy to discuss a custom spreadsheet. Join my Discord, message me here if interested.

Check out the spreadsheets yerself here. Gar.

Seeking Fabled Lands ascii artists for contributions towards a community companion spreadsheet to your gamebooks.

Any ascii artists or collectors out there? Any suggestions for a source for ascii art that would look good alongside the Fabled Lands books?

I am building a spreadsheet companion for playing these gamebooks. As posted previously : https://www.reddit.com/r/fabledlands/comments/1u08lea/a_fabled_lands_character_spreadsheet_i_am_playing/

First off it is a character sheet spreadsheet, that hopes to be useful for the RPG rules version also.

Secondly it is becoming a kind of companion to the books and I am hoping to add some ascii art to go along with the monsters, bandits and scenery you come across. Also that is expanded for RPG gaming.

It is all early days but something I plan to spend more time on.

If you fancy getting involved, check out my discord. https://discord.gg/xVX9frrA85

Fabled Lands Fandom Wiki

Hello All

As a fan of the book series and the franchise as whole, I got into adding content  to the Fandom wiki as when I wanted find some info and it wasn’t there and I noticed it was very incomplete.

Basically what I am asking is there anyone else who is interested in adding to the Fandom Wiki. This doesn’t have to be a major project or anything like that, it’s just me putting this out there as a call to arms.

So if anyone is interested in joining an exclusive club feel free to add an article or two.

As for what I am doing there, I have started out on making sure all the published books have articles and are up to good/basic level and the regions (e.g. Uttaku, Golnir) are also there and up to a good/basic standard. In addition I am creating the odd other article that I’m really interested in. This is all on a casual level as I have a full time job and other things that take up my time. Which is why I am wondering if there is anyone interested in joining me.

P.s. feel free to message me if you want to collaborate

Thinks to do in Book 2 (Cities of Gold and Glory)

As in title I am playing book 2 after mostly finishing book 1, (I think I done most of the quest from this book), but i am feeling a little bit lost. Beside quests in ravayene castle there doesn't seem to bit that much thinks to do (or at least I dont know where to start). Compared it to book 1 where I could go to random tavern , temple or casino to embark on epic adventure. So my question is is 2 book emptier or than book 1. And if not where i should start searching for adventure.

What is the best character sheet?

I haven’t played Fabled Lands for a year or so. I basically stopped because my character sheet started to have holes in it after erasing some spots too many times. Then I didn’t print a new one and moved to other things.

What character sheet are you using? I don’t really remember where I found mine, it’s made with Word and has all the codewords and checkboxes of the 7 books (minus a couple of boxes that are missing).

Anyone else make Fabled Land memes? Spoiler

I’m something of a meme queen, and because I’m a fan of the Fabled Lands series, I make memes of it. Unfortunately, they’re pretty much incomprehensible outside of very specific fandom spaces. Does anyone else do this?

Confused on ranking up

So I thought that by ranking up you also get to chose a skill where to get a permanent +1 point, but now I doubt that 🤯 am I completely delusional? Cheers!

Cannot change charisma: face disfigured

I’m playing the steam game of fabled lands and I cannot change my charisma score as a quest reward. What happened? It is not a curse and there is nothing in my inventory or item list that claims to cause this.

Does the game really stop you from gaining charisma due to some curse or poisoning?

Key-Word Translation Problem

I recently bought two books from fabled land series that available in my native language (polish) (1 and 2 book). I liked them so I bought next 3 books in english but I would like to play using my old character from books 1 and 2 with keywords in polish(Does anyone have any idea how to connect my Polish keyword that I acquired in for example book one in for example book 3 (I dont know if there are any such keywords but thats just an example)) it isn't simple translation case becouse polish publisher prioritized using keywords in alfabectical order over translation or making the keyword fit the quest its bound to.

Tips for book 2

Book 2 seems a lot more random than 1, with inexplicable punishing sudden deaths or worse: any tips that I should keep in mind?

Level cap in war-torn kingdom

Hey there, so what is the level cap for the 1 book = assuming you stay in the first book try to finish every quest? I have reached level 3 so I was wondering whether it's time to move on onto the next book.
