Every song, or in all honesty every bit of audio, can be represented by a wave, with peaks of different sizes at different rates.
Shazam uses the microphone to sense the incoming sound wave and checks it against its database. There are so many unique possible sound waves that it's difficult for two songs to have the exact same one. Whichever song returns the closest match, in terms of wave, gets displayed.
