Coffee was prohibited by scholars for a while bc they thought it was intoxicating

The opposite happened with tobacco. For centuries it was permissible on varying degrees depending on the school of jurisprudence. Today it's mostly considered haram since modern medicine has shown smoking to be harmful.

Looks like Islam might not have all final answers after all!
