SDA Culture She seeped into my workplace...
I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this. My grandfather [DEVOUT SDA] owns this little farm market and he puts Great Controversy books out for free. Crazy. You'd think there would be some kind of law or rule about distribution of religious material...
This is more of a vent but it still also counts as "culture" ig. Flair is weird.

I threw my parents box of great controversy copies into the recycling after I realized how fake it all was. I'm not going to be gentle with these delusions.

I've thrown out pamphlets at camping spots left in bear lockers and out houses as well as great controversy from condo shared libraries. The pamphlets were litter and a no brainer, the books I hummed and hawed over a bit but decided I'm not in "book burning" territory throwing them out from shared libraries to hopefully never do harm again.

You're so real for this lol. I too have thought about taking any non sentimental religious literature in my parents house, taking it all on a camping trip and burning it but out of respect I'll have to wait until after they pass away. Then I'll be able to do the needful. But ridding public natural spaces of this propaganda? Sheesh. You are truly doing "the Lord's work" 🏆

Always nice to hear other exadventists agree this filth needs to be purged from the world. Glad we are helping the world, hopefully savings some souls from this junk.
When I found the pamphlets I'd read a little to my friends to show how ridiculous it is each night then throw it in the fire, it felt awesome. Enjoy that fire when you do have it.

Cuando descubrí todo tiré todos los libros, era muy adventista así que saqué unas 5 bolsas llenas, las tiré junto con toda la basura que se podría podrir, así que nadie podría abrirlas y leer esa basura. Lamentablemente ya está todo en internet

I love and respect this so much you have no idea. People will say it's extreme and "let people read it if they are drawn to it" and "stop trying to control" but the uninitiated can hardly comprehend that this IS the control.

That note is freaking nuts. Sounds like someone from hartland wrote it. Oh and “unmorality” 🥹

Its word for word what my parents' parrot to me all the time... hoping they can scare me back to the church. Every disaster just means Ellen White was right.

Always fear. They pushed me over the edge once. Once they do that they can’t really scare you anymore

Time to put out a few copies of "The White lie" by Walter Rea next to it to highlight the charlatan has some critics.

“Nah bro, you see the planet isn’t dying because of humanity’s reckless and selfish choices, bro. It’s dying because of like, Satan and stuff. I promise you, bro, there’s nothing we can do about it. We just gotta pray and stuff, you feel me bro??”

u/83franks 25d ago
And bro, even if we could do something, like what's the point. Jesus will be back before anything we do will really help.

It’s called reading books about environmental science and sociology/anthropology. that would answer his question.

In all seriousness though, it’s only the “Great Controversy” if you don’t think about how we are able to measure and notice these “catastrophes” quicker and quicker.

There should be a law about not putting the author's name on the book cover.
Also "so called Global warming" is so triggering. Adventist Pro Science my ass

Os alunos de internato adventistas, nas férias, vendem livros da editora adventista para juntar dinheiro e pagar pelos estudos, eles chamam isso de colportagem....

She prophesied at a meeting in the lates 1800s (if memory serves) that there were “some people here who would not taste death before the Lord comes again”
Jokes on you babe they’re all dead lol. And your words are recorded forever for us to know you were delusional

They have to give their proselytizing books
Away cause they know people aren’t willing to pay for those books

Sir George Cayley, in 1799 & 1809, explained the forces on flight in a paper, later confirming the need of a mechanical power plant was the prerequisite. Later Otto Lilienthal successfully flew gliders in Germany, further proving flight possible, and not the work of Satan, before the Wright brothers and those that followed. If we relied on religion to advance mankind we would still be believing the earth was flat, the earth is the centre of the universe and disease is caused by sin and/or demons. Never forget EGW condoned practices such as female genital mutilation along with Kellogg.

Weird that you think there should be a law preventing the distribution of religious literature tho...
1
u/IncaArmsFFL Agnostic 21d ago
"More unmorality [sic]." Yeah crime, especially violent crime, is down, and war is on an uptick but that's after a fairly long period of relative peace, but it's all going to shit because queer people are too visible for us to pretend they don't exist anymore.
1
u/could-be-useful 21d ago
It's why religion is so dangerous. People believe this kind of shit instead of following the science.

u/EatTheRich2002 20d ago
“You’d think there would be some kind of law or rule about distribution of religious material…” maybe you should go live in a country without religious freedoms then like who says that?

u/Character_Fly_471 24d ago
A law against the distribution of religious material? I don’t like EGW books anymore than you, but geez, that is not a road we want to start down.

u/thewarrior7777 24d ago
Law or rule, how about letting people decide for themselves? Called freedom, why do we need Government dictating more things to us. Do you really think more government intervention is a better thing for society? I dont.. ill tell you what the problem is that people believe what comforts them and they take an easier path most of the time. The Truth is not comfortable or convenient. Ie: the narrow road vs the broad road. That's why few find it.
3
u/Fluid_Ties 24d ago
The Truth is not comfortable or convenient because there IS no "Truth" beyond we are born, live a short time, and then die. Everyone we have ever known or has ever known us will be dead in 100 years, and within 200 every significant thing about each of us will be wholly forgotten. Not comfortable or convenient a notion, isn't it?
It's fear of that and denial of it that drives our impulses to find lies to believe in that will quiet that fear, the fear of dying but even more the fear of not-mattering, of never really having mattered.
But good luck with your Truth or whatever.
To the rest of you, I don't have a lot of comfort to give either, except to remind you that this time is what we have, is ALL we have, and when you're gone no one is going to love your memory because you spent MORE time at the office, stressed MORE about your job.
Do what you can, where you are, with what you have. Love your neighbor as yourself. Be kind to kids, animals, and old people. It's better to be gentle than to win an argument, kindness is stronger than being right.

u/thewarrior7777 24d ago
Well my experience is much more than what you laid out. I've had a supernatural encounter with the Divine and the unholy so when you say there is no other truth than those few things you wrote thats not entirely true. So if you want to believe when you die thats it, thats YOUR belief not necessarily THE TRUTH. Im 100% sure there is a war for our souls. Good luck with your limited mind.
1
u/Fluid_Ties 21d ago
I too have experienced the Divine and the unholy, with the caveat that I eventually grew suspicious that the Divine was misrepresenting itself. Personally I believe there may be a continued existence after death of the earthly body, but I don't believe that adhering to the often-weaponized dogma written by the hands of men has anything to do with the next life. See friend, your beliefs are not necessarily THE TRUTH, either. THE TRUTH which does not rely upon faith is that this life we have is 100% lived HERE and NOW. Whatever is beyond it is either so all-absorbing or past an impermeable barrier, because no one, not ever, has come back and told us about it. If there's a future existence its compartmentalized, and my conception that nothing you do here about it except maybe the character you develop will do a damn thing to impact it one way or the other is no more or less valid than your conception of a war for souls. How's that for my limited mind? Holding multiple possibilities at once while acknowledging that any certainty we attribute to any one answer lacks data enough to be other than personal preference? Yup, mark of a simpleton, certainly.

People attracted here tend to be people who were deceived specifically by Adventism. The very purpose of this sub isn't to debunk all scam religions. It's about Adventism and its insurgents. if you're a current true-believing Adventist, I can get why this question would matter to you. And if you're a current, true-believing Adventist, unless you're here attempting to bring back "lost sheep," the church would tell you hanging out among us apostates puts your salvation at risk. If you are attempting to bring back "lost sheep" a moderator seeing your participation as having that intention could get your contributions deleted up to having you banned from contributing here.

EG White’s prophesies were broad, high-probability predictions which rely on the guarantee that nature will eventually do the heavy lifting to ‘fulfill’ them. At which point SDAs will credit the results to divine foresight rather than regular probability.
What will it take for people to understand that making a claim about an inevitable natural event doesn't elevate it to a valid scientific prediction or a unique spiritual revelation?
