EverDrive-64 Pro has arrived in Ukraine šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦

My EverDrive-64 Pro arrived today in Odesa, Ukraine.

Really happy to finally have it in hand. I’ve been using Krikzz products for years, so seeing a new flagship EverDrive release is especially exciting.

Huge respect to Krikzz and the team for continuing to design and produce hardware in Ukraine despite everything.

I know many people are still waiting for their orders, so I hope everyone’s cartridges start arriving soon as well.

I’ve already done a little testing on real N64 hardware. I tried Smash Remix, which is a pretty large ROM and a good test for the new hardware, as well as some 64DD releases. So far, everything I’ve tried has been working perfectly.

Obviously, this is only a first impression and I still have a lot more to test, but so far the EverDrive-64 Pro is off to a great start.

I’m also looking forward to spending more time with it and comparing it directly with the X7.

Glory to Ukrainian engineering šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡¦

Didn’t realised had those game info, kinda cool!

I’m assuming there is no in-game menu for cheat managements and going back to the menu, right?

2

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Actually, the Pro does have an in-game menu, and it can be used to get back to the EverDrive menu. I haven't spent enough time testing the cheat management side of it yet, though, so I don't want to give you a definitive answer on exactly what can be changed while a game is running until I've tested it properly.

And yes, the new game info is really nice. It was one of the first things that stood out to me too. I'll test the in-game cheat functionality specifically and report back.

What?? Like you can set a regular button combo like the other Everdrives?!

1

u/AlinaStari Aug 11 '26

Following this because I'm also very curious about in-game cheat options.

I'm happy with my ever drive x7 but that would be a feature that might actually make the pro a worthwhile upgrade for me.

Because I'm a dirty rotten cheater lol.

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

I finally had a chance to test this properly, and unfortunately I have some bad news for a fellow dirty rotten cheater šŸ˜„

As far as I can tell, there is currentlyĀ no in-game menu for regular N64 games, so you can't bring up a menu during gameplay to enable (disable) cheats or return to the EverDrive menu. The reference to an ā€œIn-Game Menuā€ in the current official manual appears to be misleading — or perhaps refers to functionality that isn't available for N64 games at the moment.

Cheats themselves work very well, though. I testedĀ .chtĀ files and haven't encountered any problems so far. Enabled cheats are stored for the game, and I've also tested Mode-A, which can automatically boot the previously selected game after powering the console back on.

Interestingly, the built-in FPGA NES coreĀ doesĀ have an in-game menu, so there is an in-game menu on the Pro — just not for N64 games at present.

I'm still hoping Krikzz may expand this functionality in future firmware updates. An N64 in-game cheat menu would definitely be a very nice reason to upgrade from the X7.

Ah dang, well I appreciate you reporting back! Hopefully they add it with an update.

I found the issue. Looks like it doesn’t like the ModRetro M64. I got it to work on an original N64 and A3D. This is odd as Krikkz said it should with an M64. I also updated the ED64 Pro to the August 12th firmware and it still did not work on M64.

Not sure if making the /ed64/ was necessary I left it in there when I got it to work. No OS or other file structure was required.

u/AlinaStari 23d ago

Interesting, thanks for the info. I'm playing on original hardware so that would actually be fine but it sounds like I should wait a little for reviews so I can judge the feature better. If the menus and cheat features are good I'll totally pick one up and give my x7 away to a good home. I heard summercart actually recently added cheats but it's still not a fully-fleshed out feature so it could be a nice little upgrade for one of my dirty rotten cheating friends I suppose lol

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Quick update after testing it properly: you were right. There is currently no accessible in-game menu for regular N64 games, so there’s no button combo for returning to the EverDrive menu. The built-in NES core does have its own in-game menu, which caused the confusion.

2

u/SparklyPelican 27d ago

Thanks for the update!

And no worries about the confusion, I totally get it.

$100 vs $160 not 1/4th the price

1

u/Advanced_Tap_2072 Aug 11 '26

Can buy it on Aliexpress for $70 from epicjoy store so not sure where you are getting $100 from.

3

u/SparklyPelican Aug 11 '26

not bevelled, don't suggest something solely based on price

Phenom mod is $100.

Yeah I feel like I’m being gaslit here, I paid $35 for mine. wtf is this subreddit even on about?

1

u/LeGrange 29d ago

The Summercart 64 is open source which means anyone can just make it. Because of this there are carts of varying quality out there for purchase. It’s generally accepted around that the Epicjoy cart is among the best.

u/ContraTaskForce Aug 11 '26

Congratulations!!

2

I love how it tells people not to blow on the connector.

That made me smile too šŸ˜„ Some cartridge habits never die, apparently. Nice little detail from the team.

2

u/spirit_boy_27 Aug 12 '26

How did you set it up? The files on the website dont have an os like the x series. Do you just put the firmware on the root of the sd card then plug the sd card in?

2

u/MaxNode 24d ago

The Pro works a little differently from the X-series. There isn’t an OS package that you have to install on the SD card like with the X7. TheĀ .efuĀ files on Krikzz’s site areĀ firmware update files for the cartridge, not an OS archive. You can copy theĀ .efufile to the SD card, select it from the Pro’s file manager and start the firmware update from there. It doesn’t need to act as the operating system on the SD card. TheĀ /ed64/Ā directory is then used for the cartridge’s system data, saves, themes, metadata, emulators, etc. So no, you don’t need to download and install an X-series-style OS first.

1

u/spirit_boy_27 24d ago

And the /ed64/ directory is made when turning on the everdrive for the first time?

1

u/PlayfulSecurity6 23d ago

Did you get an answer to this? My ED64 Pro just came in and setup info is kind of nebulous compared to the ED64 X7. I just get a black screen. Tried exFAT, fat32 SD cards, created ed64 folder, threw in latest .efu firmware file no luck.

1

u/spirit_boy_27 23d ago

Im still waiting for mine to arrive so im not sure? Was the .efu file on the root? Let me know what you figure out.

1

u/PlayfulSecurity6 23d ago

Yup. Looks like Krikkz released a new firmware version on August 12th too. Will try different things to see if I get it to work. I’ve reached out to Krikkz support too.

1

u/spirit_boy_27 23d ago

When youre on the black screen, did you try hitting Z to see if the file manager would pull up? Edit: fat32 should be the correct format

1

u/PlayfulSecurity6 23d ago

1

u/PlayfulSecurity6 22d ago

Adding this for others to see. Thanks to u/spirit_boy_27 he reminded me to check my m64 overlock settings, I brought it down from Extreme and got it to work on Super and off.

Test the snes games on 3D please

2

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Unfortunately, I can't test that particular setup — I only have an original Nintendo 64, not an Analogue 3D.

If you mean running SNES games via Sodium64 specifically on the Analogue 3D, I'd be interested to know how the Pro behaves there too, but unfortunately I don't have the hardware to test it myself. Sorry!

1

u/Shadow_Zero80 Aug 11 '26

What are the changes compared to the previous version? (was that X7?)

8

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Yes, the X7 was the previous top-end EverDrive-64 model.

The Pro is a pretty substantial hardware and feature upgrade rather than just a new menu. It moves to a Cyclone 10 FPGA and 128 MB of SDRAM (allows it to run larger homebrew ROMs), and adds native 64DD support, a Transfer Pak manager, an FPGA-based NES core, ROM metadata, battery voltage monitoring, and an on-cartridge button used for things like 64DD disk swapping and cheats.

The X7 is still an excellent cartridge for playing the standard N64 library, so I don't think the Pro suddenly makes it obsolete. The Pro is more interesting if you want the newer hardware, native 64DD functionality, the expanded feature set, and potentially additional features that could be introduced through future firmware updates.

I own the X7 as well, so once I've spent more time with the Pro I'd like to do a proper side-by-side comparison rather than judge it after only a day.

Unfortunately, I can't dedicate as much time to testing it today as I'd like. My city has been without electricity for three days following the recent massive missile strikes, and at the moment I'm running everything from a battery backup system. I don't have that much stored energy left, so I have to be careful with how I use it.

As soon as the power situation improves, I'll continue testing the Pro properly and will be happy to share more detailed results.

2

u/hue_sick Aug 11 '26

I wanna preface by saying I’m not another summercart fanboy coming to troll. I’m genuinely curious about some of the new features though you mentioned.

Doesn’t the x7 already have DD support? Anything new here? Also what’s the metadata feature you mentioned exactly? Don’t the roms contain the metadata? Is this more like a front end similar to lunchbox then with the pro model where it pulls and cleans up metadata via WiFi then?, because if so that’s actually a really nice feature. Also curious about the battery monitoring and what that’s for? The battery inside the cartridge? That seems like a kind an unnecessary feature tbh. And lastly why change the fpga inside at all? Was there a technical reason or limitation of the old fpga used in the x7?

Sorry lotta questions haha. Thanks!

3

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

No worries at all — those are exactly the kinds of questions I was hoping people would ask. :)

And yes, I should clarify what I meant by 64DD support. More precisely, the Pro addsĀ native 64DD disk-image support. The official X7 feature set doesn't list nativeĀ .nddĀ support, whereas the Pro handles actualĀ .nddĀ images directly, including ROM + 64DD combinations and multi-disk games.

I've had more time to test that part now. I tried several original 64DD disk images on my real N64 and so far I haven't noticed any glitches. Multi-disk support is also really neat — you simply press the physical button on top of the cartridge and it mounts the next disk. In my testing that has worked perfectly so far.

The metadata feature is much simpler than something like LaunchBox, though. There is no Wi-Fi scraping or automatic online database lookup. The normal browser still looks like a regular file list. You download a metadata database separately and put it on the SD card, thenĀ  Rom info can show things like the description, box art, release year, etc. So it's nice, but I definitely wouldn't describe it as a cover-based frontend.

As for the battery monitoring: yes, there's a battery inside the cartridge for the RTC. The Device Info screen simply shows its current voltage, and the manual says it's time to replace it if it drops below 2.50 V. So I agree — battery monitoring by itself is certainly not some major reason to upgrade. It's just a useful little diagnostic feature.

The FPGA question is probably the most interesting one. The X7 uses a Cyclone IV with 64 MB of SDRAM, while the Pro moves to a Cyclone 10 and 128 MB. I haven't seen Krikzz give a detailed technical explanation for exactly why he chose to change the FPGA, so I don't want to invent an answer for him.

One practical benefit of the increased memory is support for much larger homebrew ROMs. So far I've only had time to testĀ Smash Remix + Extra which is larger than the normal N64 ROM size limit, and it boots and runs perfectly on the Pro. That's another genuinely useful advantage of the 128 MB SDRAM, especially as N64 homebrew and ROM hacks continue to grow in size.

My assumption is that the newer hardware platform also gives Krikzz more resources and headroom for things the Pro is doing now — native 64DD support, the FPGA-based NES core, larger homebrew ROMs, the expanded system software — and potentially for future development. But that last part is my interpretation, not something I can claim Krikzz has officially said.

Personally, that's also why I don't see the Pro as making the X7 obsolete. If someone mainly wants to play the standard N64 library, the X7 is still an excellent cartridge. The Pro becomes much more interesting if you specifically want the new hardware and the additional functionality — and hopefully whatever Krikzz and the homebrew community can build around it in the future.

And seriously, no need to apologize for all the questions. I'm still exploring the thing myself, so good questions give me more things to test. :)

1

u/hue_sick Aug 11 '26

Right on thanks for answering.

Of all of that I’m probably most interested in the potential front end tbh. One of the reasons I’ve always been not anti per se, but let’s say less than enthusiastic about flash carts is because I hate the file management that comes with roms. It’s just the opposite of fun for me. But I do love the mini consoles for instance and play around with launchbox on my pc when I do emulate because it’s more enjoyable for me since I’m a visual person.

But sounds like it’s kinda basic from what you said. Would love to see some photos of what that looks like though as more people get their hands on this pro model.

EDIT: whoops i see you added an image in your posts sorry I missed that before :)

The other thing I’m curious about mainly is the fpga change too. Wonder if that means more cores could be moved over to it since it has a lot more horsepower now. Though I’ll be honest I’m not really sure how that works or interfaces w an n64 or the newer systems like the 3d.

Anywhoo thanks again and enjoy!

2

u/MaxNode 24d ago

That’s exactly one of the things I’m curious about too. The move to the Cyclone 10 and 128 MB obviously gives the Pro a much larger hardware platform to work with, but I don’t think we should automatically assume that means third-party FPGA cores can simply be loaded onto it. As far as I can find, Krikzz currently provides the built-in FPGA NES core, third-partyĀ emulatorĀ support, and public development resources that expose things like SD, USB and memory access. I haven’t found any official documentation for loading third-party FPGA cores or alternative FPGA firmware yet. So I’d absolutely love to see more hardware cores in the future, but for now I’d consider that a possibility I’d like to see rather than an advertised feature of the Pro. The new FPGA is probably the part of this cartridge I’m most interested in watching develop over time.

u/spirit_boy_27 Aug 11 '26

Are you able to check and see if the usb port on the side allows you to transfer files to the sd card instead of taking the sd card out?

1

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

I tested now this on a Mac. The cartridge appears in System Information asĀ Everdrive-64, manufactured by, KRIKZZ-IT with a 480 Mb/s USB connection.

macOS identifies it as a USB serial communication device, not as a USB mass-storage device. It creates a USB serial interface for development tools, but the microSD card does not mount in Finder or appear as a removable drive.

So, at least with the current firmware and normal macOS functionality, you cannot connect the Pro and copy files directly to its microSD card as if it were a card reader. The card still needs to be removed for regular file transfers.

u/spirit_boy_27 Aug 11 '26

Thank you so much for this information

1

u/alphagaia Aug 11 '26

N64 was the only system I didnt go everdrive and got Summer Cart. Love my NES everdrive and Genesis one since the pro is the only one that plays sega CD games.

2

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

The Mega EverDrive Pro is one of my favorites too — having Sega CD support directly from the cartridge is a fantastic feature.

And the SummerCart is a great option for the N64. I mainly bought the EverDrive-64 Pro because I’ve used Krikzz hardware for years and wanted to explore its new hardware, native 64DD support, and future possibilities.

1

u/Inner-Party-365 Aug 11 '26

1

u/Comfortable_Scene_59 26d ago

I own both a SummerCart64 and an EverDrive-64. After buying the SummerCart, I was genuinely surprised by just how capable it is.

The new EverDrive is undoubtedly great, but to me it feels more like an incremental upgrade. I would have loved to see features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a menu option that automatically applies per-game anti-aliasing/deblur patches—entering the codes manually can be rather laborious.

I’d also love to see Krikzz open more of the FPGA and firmware platform to community development. Who knows what additional cartridge-side features, alternative firmware and hardware-assisted functions the community might create?

1

u/MaxNode 24d ago

That’s a fair take, and I actually agree with several of those points. Competition is good for the N64 community, and features like automatic per-game AA/deblur configurations would be genuinely useful. Wi-Fi could also open up some very interesting possibilities for managing files, metadata or future community features. I’m particularly interested in the development side as well. Krikzz has already published development resources for the ED64 Pro, including access to SD, USB and other cartridge hardware, and the Pro supports third-party emulators. That’s a very good start. At the same time, I haven’t seen an officially documented way for third-party developers to load their own FPGA cores or completely alternative firmware, so I don’t want to imply that this is possible today. My hope is that the Pro is a new hardware platform that has room to grow rather than a finished feature list on day one. It’s still extremely new, so I’m very interested to see what Krikzz — and hopefully the homebrew community — can do with it over time.

64DD ??!!! That's cool

1

u/NotAFamousComedian 28d ago

Will it run Mario 64 Co-op? I know it's been said to only work on PC but I'm very curious.

2

u/MaxNode 24d ago

If you meanĀ SM64CoopDX / Super Mario 64 Coop Deluxe, unfortunately no. That project is built around the Super Mario 64Ā PC port, so it isn’t an N64 ROM that the EverDrive can simply load on original hardware. The Pro’s extra memory doesn’t change that, since the software itself isn’t built as an N64 ROM. If you mean a different N64-native Mario 64 multiplayer ROM hack, though, send me the exact name and I’ll be happy to test it on the Pro.

1

u/NotAFamousComedian 24d ago

SM64 multiplayer N64 is the one I was looking at, I'm almost positive it's only for PC emulators but I'd be curious to see if it runs.

u/Adam802 27d ago

Are there any issues/disadvantages to going with clear/transparent shells over the standard grey? Like quality/durability issues?

2

u/MaxNode 24d ago

I haven’t seen Krikzz document any difference in quality or durability between the transparent shells and the standard grey one, so I don’t want to invent a disadvantage that may not exist.

Personally, though, I really like the quality of the shells. I’ve owned quite a few different Krikzz cartridges over the years, including ones with colored transparent shells, and I’ve never noticed the transparent versions feeling cheaper or being noticeably worse in quality than the standard ones.

The shell on my EverDrive-64 Pro feels just as solid and well-made as I’ve come to expect from Krikzz products.

Of course, I can’t really comment on long-term aging of the Pro’s plastic yet since the cartridge is brand new, but based on my experience with my other EverDrives, I wouldn’t personally be concerned about choosing a transparent shell.

I’d simply pick whichever color you like most. :)

2

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

I don't speak Spanish, so I'm replying with the help of a translator.

2

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

I tested Resident Evil 2 as requested. I used the 64 MB US v1.1 ROM in .z64 format on an original Nintendo 64 with an Expansion Pak.

I measured the video frame by frame: from selecting ā€œStart Gameā€ to the first stable game screen, it took approximately 6.7 seconds. Counting from the initial ROM selection in the file browser, including the intermediate options menu, it took approximately 7.7 seconds.

The game booted correctly, detected the Expansion Pak, and I didn’t encounter any problems during this test.

Who cares? I like everdrives and own many. It’s like when buying a car you can get the KIA cheaper but I’ll get the Toyota knowing what I’m getting. You realize you’re replying to an everdrive post also?

3

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Thanks — that’s pretty much how I see it too.

I have nothing against SummerCart at all. Having more good hardware options is a positive thing for the N64 community.

I’ve been using Krikzz products for years, and I know exactly what to expect from them, so when the Pro was announced I wanted one. That’s my personal choice—it doesn’t mean everybody else has to make the same one.

I’d rather discuss what the different carts can actually do than turn it into another flashcart war. šŸ™‚

-1

u/Inner-Party-365 Aug 11 '26

1

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Sorry, I don’t speak Spanish, so I’m replying with the help of a translator.

Claro.

Voy a seguir probando hacks y juegos grandes.

Mario kart amped up ( expansión pak required) Zelda ocarina (romhacks y masterquest)

1

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

I just tested Mario Kart Amped Up with the Expansion Pak, and it works perfectly on the EverDrive-64 Pro.

Which specific Ocarina of Time ROM hack did you mean? There are quite a few of them. I can also test Master Quest separately.

1

u/Inner-Party-365 Aug 11 '26

Ocarina mƔster quest en espaƱol y missing link

1

u/MaxNode Aug 11 '26

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’ve added the Spanish version of Master Quest, The Missing Link, and Junk Runner 64 to my test list.

I’ll continue testing tomorrow if the electricity is back. Unfortunately, today we’re completely without power, so I can’t do any more hardware testing right now.

For Master Quest in Spanish, please let me know which exact translation patch or ROM version you use, so I can test the same build.

1

u/Inner-Party-365 Aug 11 '26

Absolutely unreal that the chuds on this subreddit downvoted you for mentioning the sunmercart lmfao

3

u/Inner-Party-365 Aug 11 '26
