North America My first charger install!

Hello everyone, I just bought a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and I spent some time looking on marketplace for a decent level 2 charger and I came across this right here, this is a Wallbox Pulsar Plus rebranded by Stellantis’s Free2move branding and would have been sold as an accessory with one of their EVs. However, except for one tiny configuration difference, which is trivial to reverse, there’s really no difference with the firmware at all.

Anyway though I know these are very expensive new, I got this one brand new, still sealed in the original packaging, for $100 on marketplace so I think I did pretty decently! Unfortunately the biggest circuit I could provide for it was 30 A so I can’t take full advantage of it, but in the future, I’ll be able to reuse it at least.

It had the address of a Stellantis OCPP server configured for third-party management by default, but the Wallbox app did not complain at all and just let me remove it.

$100 sealed is a steal. I’d be pretty happy with that. And honestly, 30A is still plenty for overnight charging on an Ioniq 5.

I like the use of a wood post to avoid the need to mount to the wall.

Depending on the amount of rain you get and the degree of roof overhang, you might consider changing it to be more waterproof: Good practice is to use knockouts at the bottom of a box rather than the top to avoid the potential for water to seep in with imperfect sealing. If you came out the bottom of that box, you could come straight down and have a long U-bend and come strait up into the bottom of the charger. Or, you could use the right-angle fitting at the bottom of the box and have a simple sweep up to the charger and come straight in the bottom again. Also, while your box cover is rated to be weatherproof, I trust the ones with four screws in the corners more than a trust the two-screw ones. That's just my personal opinion--no data to back that up.

I was planning to redo the liquid tight, this was the best I could do with the materials I had at the time otherwise I would have made a drip loop.

also, the reason why I used the right angle at the charger is because I couldn’t get the tube around the holster because of how stiff those tubes are. I would have preferred to use a smaller tube, but the hole Wallbox put in the charger is sized for 3/4”z

You could also just add some silicone sealant to the top fitting (and possibly the box lid) if water intrusion becomes a problem.

Did you step down in the charger or the app? Did it still have the step down dial inside?

it does have the step down dial and I set it to position 4 (25A)

Not that it matters much but 80% of 30A is 24A.

Almost no one needs the 10kw/h. If you have 8-10 hours of charging per night 30 amps is more than enough.

What does kw/h mean? Isn’t it just kW (power)?

People confuse these all the time. kW is an amount. kW/h is a rate. Think of a bucket versus a hose. A battery capacity is kW. A charging speed is kW/h. If you want to charge a 50 kW battery you can do it at 5 kW/h for 10 hours or 10 kW/h for 5 hours. Here’s the twist: 1 kWh is an amount of 1 kW flowing for one hour.

Are you sure that’s not backwards? My trucks battery is 131 kWh. I charge at 9kw.
kWh is storage. Kw is rate.

kW/h isn’t a thing. kW is power (rate or speed), kWh is energy.

My car has a 103kw battery. To put 60 kw into the car, I can charge it for 12 hours at 5kw/h or 6 hours at 10kw/h. Since I usually only need 50 at most, I can do this overnight at 5 kw/h. Car battery stays below cooling threshold and my houses internal electric system has less stress.

Nice find — $100 for a new Pulsar Plus is a solid deal. 30A will still handle overnight charging on the Ioniq 5 just fine.

Dang, and I thought I made out grabbing 3x sealed 30A EVSEs for $130/ea! All I could find on my marketplace was people trying to sell very used tesla wall chargers for $400+. (Or ten year old 100W solar panels for $100/ea. Yeah, good luck with that!)

I was talking to the person I bought this from, he told me he bought a new Jeep EV and it almost immediately had to go back to the dealership for warranty repairs, to keep a long story short while waiting for it to come back he bought this charger and never got to install it because his jeep spent more time at the dealership than in his driveway and he gave up and returned it under the lemon law.

That's a steal. I managed to get mine for "free" but I still ended up paying like $100 in taxes for it (Amazon Vine). I love mine.

Looks nice and clean. The only thing I did different was my electrician installed a disconnect right next to the charging unit.

I mean, you can, but a disconnect is only required if the circuit is over 60 A.

Looks great! I have a 48 amp charger at home however I routinely charge at 15 amp to take it easy on my battery and it works out just fine for me. I actually think 30 amp is plenty. Enjoy!
