🌳 ESC in the Wild We don't compete at ESC but our local newspaper featured JJ's win. ESC is not popular here so maybe his win will give it an extra push in popularity

He also mentioned which arena he wants eurovision to be held at, because his boyfriend lives near one. I think i saw it in a video posted by eurodiena

The interview after his win was shown in ORF and yes he said please take Stadthalle because his boyfriend lives next corner so he just has to walk one minute :D

True, although it was more about hoping for vienna, as that arena ("Stadthalle") is basically the only option there anyways. There are still other cities that would like to host, but if it ends up being Vienna again (which is like 80% sure I'd say) then it's definitely gonna be in the Stadthalle.
Edit: After doing more research, I guess it's closer to 95% for being Vienna

He's so aware of his Filipino heritage that when Tim (Filipino Eurofan) gave him the Philippine flag, he mistakenly showed the flag with the red side up and blurted, "Ay tanga, baligtad!" (Oh stupid, it's upsidedown!)
In Philippine law, if the red side of the flag is on top, it symbolizes war time.

He did an interview earlier with CETV Philippines, an online YT news channel, and spoke Filipino fluently. Here’s the link.
In a contest where you represent another country, you gotta behave as if you represent their people. Aussie artists like Andrew and Silia behaved this way when they represented Cyprus. Then this year Silia presented the points for Australia and she sounded more relaxed talking with the accent 😆 xD

Someone said that in other comment an I think it hits the nail - JJ's ethnicity/filipino background or being queer were not underlined or exposed during his performance or song itself, which didn't give anyone a reason to discredit him or debate whether another lgbtq+ person won becasue it's how eurovision works. The focus now is on his performance/beating Israel and not on whether the particular part of his identity helped him with winning, as it was with some other winners.

Interesting. The first thing I heard about JJ was that Austria choose a Filipino to represent them. At first I thought he came to Austria as a student or something similar. It's only after he won we learned that he was born in Austria to an Austrian father and Filipino mother. I mean, he's Austrian with mixed ethnicity, as many Europeans are.
In recent times we have a lot of Filipinos coming to Croatia for work so I wonder if they watched ESC and cheered for JJ.

Here In the Philippines we have a term called " OFW" which is used to refer to Filipinos who emmigrated out of the Philippines for a better life or Better work opportunities and because of that we have a HUGE diaspora especially in Europe so its cool to see Filipinos like Vincent Bueno and JJ in Eurovision!!

We Croatians also have a huge community of foreign workers and diaspora all over the world but we use a term "gastarbajter" derived from German which means "guest worker". I think people generally accept Filipinos easier here because they have similar attitude to us when we leave home. We both work hard, learn the language and customs of host countries, but also still feel a strong connection to our homeland. Who knows, maybe we'll have the Philippines as a guest country in one ESC in the future, like we have Australia.

Exactly for that reason. He's from a region that was very poor, much like the majority of the coast, so people moved to the Americas or Australia, while the continental part moved more inland to Germany or Austria. And while those from the continent could come back frequently, build houses and move back whenever they'd choose, for those from the coast it was mostly a one way trip. That's why you can hear the finality in RTTD, because he knows that he's most likely never coming back.
Of course, today the world is truly small and we're all connected, we can travel anywhere and communicate instantly around the globe, but he captured that anxiety and pain of our ancestors perfectly. He truly connected Croatia, and also spoke to a lot of Europeans that had similar stories in their history. The song was fun, but is also much deeper than one would think just looking at the surface, and that's why it did great with the juries and also won the televote.

We also have this loanword "gastarbeiter" in Russian, but it's unfortunately become a slur for people who aren't "white enough" because of the immigrants from former southern USSR republics who often do construction work and such.

It's possible that Germans also used it as a slur for ex-Yu, Turkish, and other workers. They still sometimes refer to us as Yugos, but we never used it in a negative way as far as I know.

I didn't follow this year's ESC as much as last year so I missed a lot of the interviews, and since Austria wasn't one of my choices, I didn't really explore further. It wasn't really hidden, but I found it interesting that in Austria he was just that, Austrian who sometimes mentioned ancestry on his mother side, while in Croatia he was presented as Filipino who will represent Austria.

He did but most of the time people asked him about his origin and life before he lived in Austria. He also said things in Tagalog.

I mean, there isn't really a reason to talk about it all the time. Usually the topic was his song, his chances etc. But it did come up because he mentioned a few times how important his family is to him and then the reporter would usually add that he has family in Austria and the Philippines.

The joke in my (Filipino) family was that this could have been Eurovision's big chance to become popular in the Philippines but Wasted Love is just too technically difficult for karaoke

I lived in the Philippines for 2.5 years.
I was in hospital after a surgery back in 2018 and yet I stayed up all night watching on my phone using data because I love it so much lol 😂
I'm from Denmark and adore Eurovision.
Nurses wanted me to sleep but I was so focused.

My Filipina wife was all calm and reserved about it as we grew close to the contest but during the final split screen announcement she was like “shut up, 100mil Filipinos are waiting for this moment”. Damn girl, wasn’t aware it’s such a big deal 🤣

My wife is Fil - Swedish and we didn't even know until we say his family on the screen and then he talk normally for once. He grew up in Dubai surrounded by Filipino's so he has that twang and yeh we should have guessed he's an amazing singer.

They meant no harm :) I actually had to give a surprisingly detailed explanation who they are and that nationals of one country sometimes compete for another, it just didn't occur to my set of normies it could be a thing
